Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1035 PM MST Sun Feb 9 2020 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday) Issued at 243 PM MST Sun Feb 9 2020 Current water vapor imagery and upper air analysis is indicating moderating west to southwest flow aloft across the region, with one embedded short wave translating across the Rockies and into the Upper Midwest at this time. Water vapor imagery is also indicating an upper circulation across southern California, with more eastern Pacific energy digging into the Pacific Northwest Coast at this time. At the surface, this morning's cold front has pushed into northeastern New Mexico, with east to northeast upslope flow in place across the plains. Regional radars and webcams are indicating light snow falling across the central and eastern mountains, the high mountain valleys and portions of I-25 Corridor at this time. Tonight and Tomorrow...Latest models are coming into better agreement with westerly flow aloft becoming more west to northwest and increasing through the day tomorrow, as the first embedded short wave continues to move east and the second wave across the Pacific Northwest continues to dig across the Intermountain West and into the Northern Rockies. As lift from the first wave wanes this evening, will see light snow across high mountain valleys through the eastern mountains and immediate adjacent plains decrease in coverage and intensity through the evening and end through the overnight hours, while moisture and continued west to southwest orographic flow will keep snow ongoing across the ContDvd. With that said, have kept current winter weather advisories in tact across the central and southwest mountains, as well as the higher peaks of the northern Sangre de Cristo range through the overnight hours with 4 to 8 inches possible, greatest across the higher terrain of the eastern San Juan mountains. Additional snowfall of 1 to 3 inches will be possible across the Rampart Range, the Wet and southern Sangre de Cristo mountains, as well as the Wet Mtn and upper Arkansas River valleys. With upslope flow continuing through the overnight hours, will likely see stratus and some patchy fog persisting across the I-25 Corridor. There looks to be a brief break in precipitation, especially across the eastern mountains and plains Monday morning, as snow redevelops and increases again across the ContDvd through the late morning and afternoon. This snow looks to spread east across the high valleys through the eastern mtns and immediate adjacent plains once again through the late afternoon, and especially tomorrow night. Snow accumulations through the day Monday look to be generally light and mainly over the higher terrain, where 1 to 3 inches could fall, greatest along the ContDvd. .LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday) Issued at 243 PM MST Sun Feb 9 2020 The northern extent and magnitude of additional snowfall for the Monday night-Tuesday storm will be the primary challenge in the nearer term. This will be determined by how the northern stream trough phases with and ejects the closed low from northern Old Mexico across the southwest U.S. The majority of the longer range deterministic models suggest the northern stream upper trough will be the primary factor for southern Colorado's weather as the upper low kicks out across NM keeping the stronger lift with the southern stream system across NM and extreme southern portions of our area. NAM12 is the farthest north in lifting the system out, and is the outlier. As a result it paints a heavier snow scenario for southern Colorado. Have leaned towards the majority model consensus for now which keeps the ejecting upper low farther south. This is in line with WPC's preference via PMDHMD. As for the details, another cold front will drop through the southeast plains Monday afternoon and evening with modest easterly upslope flow developing behind it. Model soundings show favorable dendritic growth profiles in the saturated layer, particularly across southern portions of the area. Although the farther south ejecting low solution puts the majority of the upper lift across NM and along the southern CO border, there is still sufficient upslope and lift to warrant advisories for the southern mountains south of highway 50. Looks a little tougher to get advisory criteria snow north of highway 50 at this point. Will hoist advisories for the Sangre De Cristo mountains, Wet Mountains, southern I-25 corridor with the afternoon forecast package. If the closed low does eject farther north, as the outlier NAM suggests, then it is possible that snow totals will need to be increased across the southeast mountains and southern I-25 corridor and that advisories may need to be upgraded to winter storm warnings or even expanded northward. However given the trend towards a farther south/drier solution, winter weather advisories look to be the way to go. For now, the southwest mountains also appear to stay in the advisory range of snowfall totals, so will extend the current winter weather advisory through Tuesday and message the likelihood of a lull in the snowfall Monday afternoon and evening. This system exits the region Tuesday night with snow across southern sections coming to an end. Unsettled weather continues through the week with another system progged to drop in from the northwest on Wednesday. GFS and EC are drier with this next system though, and suggest a slight chance of snow for the central and southeast mountains Wednesday night. A brief break is expected for Thursday with yet another storm expected to move through the western U.S. Friday into Saturday. Lots of uncertainty with this latter system...so stayed close to the model blend solutions for now. -KT && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night) Issued at 1026 PM MST Sun Feb 9 2020 KPUB is expected to have low stratus into early Mon morning, with the ceiling then rising. By late afternoon or early Mon evening, chances for snow will increase and will become likely in the evening with IFR or MVFR conditions. KCOS is expected to have low stratus until early Mon morning, and then forecast soundings show the ceiling rising with a return to VFR conditions. Clouds will then increase again in the afternoon with ceilings lowering and the potential for some light snow by mid to late afternoon. In the evening, snow will be likely with conditions becoming IFR. KALS should have a lot of cloud cover tonight and Mon, but VFR conditions are expected. The heaviest will fall across the eastern San Juan mountains and the higher elevations of the northern Sangre De Cristo mountains, where an additional 4 to 8 inches will be possible by Monday morning. The Sawatch and Mosquito ranges will see an additional 1 to 6 inches overnight, while the remainder of the mountains and lower elevations along and west of I-25 see an additional inch or two of snow. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday Another storm system will move across Colorado, merging with a weakening storm projected to lift northeastward across New Mexico. This will spread another round of snow into the mountains and adjacent plains of southern Colorado late Monday afternoon through Tuesday. Additional snowfall is expected, with the heaviest impacting the Wets and Sangre De Cristo mountains, Wet Mountain Valley, southern I-25 corridor south of Colorado City to the Raton Pass, and the Eastern San Juan mountains. An additional 5 to 10 inches will be possible across the mountains with 3 to 6 inches across the lower elevations and northern slopes of the Raton Ridge. Locally higher amounts will be possible in and near the mountains. Lighter snow will fall elsewhere with snowfall amounts of 1 to 5 inches, the heaviest of which will occur across the mountains. The projected track of the southern storm system is still prone to change, and it is possible that these snowfall amounts may need to be increased or decreased accordingly. Please monitor the latest forecasts for the most up to date information. Another quick moving storm will be possible Wednesday with some light snow possible across the mountains.
