.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 339 AM MDT Mon Oct 12 2020

...High Fire Danger Continues Today...

Current water vapor imagery and upper air analysis has moderate to
strong northwest flow aloft across the region this morning, with
yesterday's passing trough continuing to translate east across the
Upper Midwest and High Plains at this time. GOES data has also
indicated the Wild Horse wildfire hot spot across southwestern El
Paso County flaring up at times through out the overnight hours. At
the surface, yesterday's passing cold front has pushed well south of
the area into west central Texas and southeastern New Mexico, with
generally light winds (save for the breezy westerly winds across the
higher terrain) and a dry atmosphere in place across the region,
leading to cool temperatures early this morning with readings in the
20s and 30s across the higher terrain, and mainly in the 30s and 40s
across the lower elevations.

For Today and Tonight...Northwest flow aloft to slowly moderate and
become more westerly through tonight, as more eastern Pacific energy
is progged to translate across the Northern Tier of States. This
will allow for lee troughing to develop and strength along the I-25
Corridor through the late morning and afternoon, leading to breezy
westerly winds aloft mixing down, as well as breezy westerly gap
flows developing, across portions of the mid and upper Arkansas
river valley, as well as portions of the Rampart Range, the Sangre
de Cristo and Wet Mountains and Wet Mountain Valley this afternoon.
Also should see breezy southerly winds developing along and south of
the Palmer Dvd, as well as across the far southeast plains through
the afternoon, though latest model guidance is suggesting winds
across the far southeast plains may not be as strong as previously
thought.

At any rate, with the dry atmosphere in place, should see critical
fire weather conditions develop across the previously mentioned
areas, and have kept current Red Flag Warning in place from noon to
6 PM for Fire Weather Zones 220, 221, 222, 226, 227, 234, 236 and
237 which includes the central mountains, El Paso, Fremont, Teller,
Kiowa, Prowers and Baca Counties. I also added Zone 225, which
includes the Sangres and Wets and the Wet Mt Valley, as well as Zone
229, which includes Walsenburg, where westerly gap flows look to
develop this afternoon. Could also see critical fire weather
conditions across northern portions of the San Luis Valley and
western portions of Pueblo and Las Animas Counties, though
conditions do not look to be widespread enough to include at this
time.

Highs today cool some 5-10F from yesterday though will still be
generally above seasonal levels, in the upper 60s to upper 70s
across the plains, in 50s and 60s across the higher terrain and 30s
and 40s at the peaks. Lows tonight to be around seasonal levels,
with 20s and 30s across the higher terrain and high mountain
valleys, with 30s and 40s across the plains.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 339 AM MDT Mon Oct 12 2020

Dry weather is expected Tue through Sun, with fire weather concerns
mainly on Tue and Wed.

On Tue, min RH values are expected to be below 15% over the lower
elevations, and about 15-25% over the high elevations. Gusty winds
are expected in some areas Tue afternoon, but it looks like they
could be strong enough to create high fire danger in portions of
Lake and Chaffee Counties, and in Fremont, Teller and El Paso
Counties, and will issue a Fire Weather Watch for these areas.
Conditions look a little marginal in El Paso County, as they may not
reach the gust criteria for long enough in the afternoon.  Spotty
critical conditions may also occur in a limited portion of fire zone
225 and 223, but it doesn't look widespread enough to include in a
highlight at this time.  In general, temps on Tue are expected to be
10+ degrees above average, with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s
over the plains, in the 70s in the high valleys, and in the 60s to
around 70 in Teller County.

The gradient over the area will increase on Wed ahead of an upper
trof to the north, which will bring stronger winds to the area.
Afternoon min RH values are expected to be below 15% again over the
plains and in the high valleys.  At this time, it looks like the
combination of gusty winds and low RH values could result in
critical fire weather conditions over the high valleys, and the I-25
corridor, and portions of the southeast plains, but it is too early
to issue a fire weather highlight.  A dry front is forecast to move
into the southeast plains late in the afternoon and in the early
evening, but ahead of this front, high temps on Tue should be well
above average again with 80s to near 90s over the plains, in the 70s
in the high valleys and in the mid 60s to around 70 in Teller County.

For Thu the upper trof will be to the east of CO, with dry northwest
flow aloft over the area.  Temps will be cooler all across southern
CO, but most noticeably over the plains where high temps are expected
to be in the mid 50s to lower 60s which is about 25-30 degrees
cooler than Wed.  The high valleys should see highs in the 60s, with
upper 40s to lower 50s in Teller County.  RH values will be higher
on Thu across eastern areas and therefore there shouldn't be any
fire wx concerns.  One area that may still have some spotty critical
conditions will be portions of western Saguache County where RH
values will still be low and winds could be a bit gusty. Thu night
looks like the coolest night across most of southern CO, with lows
in the upper 20s to lower 20s over the plains, and in the 20s in the
high valleys.

Dry northwest flow aloft will still be over the area on Fri.  Winds
shouldn't be all that strong and fire concerns look low.  Temps will
be a little warmer over eastern areas on Fri.

On Sat a dry front is forecast to back into the southeast plains in
the late morning and early afternoon hours, bringing some breezy
northeast to easterly winds.  Dry weather will continue on Sun. High
temps over the weekend are forecast to be around to a little above
average.

hours. Lee troughing across the I-25 corridor should result in gusty
south to southwesterly flow at COS and PUB this afternoon, with
gusty west winds expected to mix down at ALS. Around 0Z winds should
die down a fair amount and become more variable overnight and into
early tomorrow.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Critical fire weather conditions can be expected today across much
of south central and southeast Colorado, as gusty west to southwest
winds of 15 to 30 mph develop along and west of the I-25 corridor
this afternoon. Breezy southerly winds of 15 to 25 mph will also
develop this afternoon across the far southeast plains. These
winds, combined with low humidity levels, and dry vegetation will
lead to conditions favorable for fire spread and growth across
the Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains, Lake, Chaffee, El Paso,
Fremont, Teller, Huerfano, Kiowa, Prowers and Baca Counties.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

High fire danger will be possible Tuesday afternoon in Lake,
Chaffee, Fremont, Teller and El Paso Counties, as winds become
gusty and humidity values fall below 15%. Increasing winds on
Wednesday across much of the area, along with low humidities,
could lead to high fire danger over much of the area, but
especially over the San Luis and upper Arkansas River valleys,
Teller and Fremont Counties and the I-25 corridor. On Thursday,
there could be some spotty areas of high fire danger in western
Saguache County.
