Currently, Pueblo's CWA graced by dry conditions in combination with
variable cloudiness, generally above seasonal mid to late May early
morning temperatures and locally gusty winds as evidenced by recent
wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph near the communities of Colorado
Springs, Pueblo, Rye, Salida and Yoder respectively.

Recent real-time data, 88D radar returns, GOES satellite imagery, PV
analysis, Hi-Res computer simulations and forecast model soundings
indicate that the surface surge responsible for the gusty northerly
component winds early this morning will be moving into northeastern
New Mexico around sunrise.

Primary near-short range meteorological concern is the potential for
strong to potentially severe thunderstorms (capable of producing
large hail, strong winds and possibly even an isolated tornado)
developing over the far southeastern Colorado plains from later this
afternoon into tonight as projected localize max capes, LI's and 0
to 6 KM shear values exceed 1500 J/KG, -6C and 40 knots
respectively, which aligns nicely with SPC's recent Day 1 "Slight
Risk" Convective Outlook over far southeastern Colorado.

Regarding fire weather, expect relatively spotty fire weather
concerns today due to the lighter winds and cooler temperatures,
therefore Fire Weather Highlights are not anticipated from today
into tonight.

Also, cooler temperatures closer to seasonal averages should be
realized over the majority of the CWA today, with projected maximum
temperatures climbing into the 70s to around 80F from the eastern
foothills and across the Interstate 25 corridor into the
southeastern Colorado plains, while San Luis Valley locations should
note maximum temperatures from near 70F to the lower 70s.

...Critical Fire Weather Conditions ramp up again Friday and
Saturday...

Southwest flow increases again Friday and Saturday as the next upper
trough drops into the western U.S. then lifts out to the north
across the northern U.S. upper Rockies on Saturday.  Dry breezy
southwest winds will spread into the mountains, valleys and southern
I-25 corridor/Raton Mesa region on Friday and have expanded the Fire
Weather Watch to include the southwest and central mountains, the
southeast mountains including the Wets and Sangre De Cristos as well
as the southern I-25 corridor of Huerfano county.  Getting spotty
brief critical fire weather conditions across portions of Fremont,
Teller and El Paso counties as well, but for now conditions do not
appear widespread or persistent enough to warrant inclusion in the
watch.

Saturday looks like the more critical fire weather day for much of
south central and southeast Colorado as increasing flow aloft
deepens the lee side surface low and kicks it eastward across the
southeast plains during the afternoon. Temperatures will hit the
lower 90s again across the plains with the dry line kicking well
east into Kansas.  Gusts up to 35 mph across the plains with gusts
up to 40 mph across the mountains will be possible...so not quite as
windy as yesterday's system, but still concerning given the drought
conditions and dry fuels.  Per collaboration with surrounding
offices will hold off on fire weather highlights as this is still
out in the 5th period, but suspect highlights will be issued later
today for Saturday as well.

Mean troughing hangs back across the southwest U.S. as more energy
drops into the back side of the system.  Meanwhile, leading energy
ejecting across the northern U.S. Rockies will send a cold front
through the plains Saturday night.  Cool upslope flow sets up for
Sunday with a more widespread potential for thunderstorms as energy
from the upper trough across UT/western CO ejects slowly eastward.
CAPE doesn't look especially high with dew points in the 40s. Raton
Mesa region may see the best chance for a strong storm or two
depending on position of front and amount of low level moisture
return.  This front is cooler than the previous one, and there is
the risk of a cap across the far eastern plains depending on the
timing of the upper trof ejecting eastward.  However forcing with
the upper trof aloft may be sufficient to allow scattered showers
and thunderstorms to spread eastward across the plains during the
evening and overnight hours and have kept the broad brush scattered
pops for Sunday night as portrayed by model blends.

Monday remains unsettled as long range models keep a developing
closed low across CO/NM. Flow aloft will be weak so severe
thunderstorm risk looks low (as does fire weather concerns), however
risk for burn scar flash flooding may go up if storms hit the wrong
locations. Will be highly dependent on degree of afternoon
instability which could be hampered by overnight/morning
showers...so too soon to say at this point how great this risk will
be. But this will be something to watch for.  Otherwise, some much
needed rainfall will be possible for the mountains and adjacent
plains.

Slow moving cut off low will continue to drop slowly southward into
NM and the southern plains on Tuesday.  Will keep some isolated
thunderstorms across the mountains Tuesday as there may be
sufficient lingering moisture behind the system.  After a couple of
cool days (Sun and Mon), temperatures will be trending upward for
the middle part of next week as the next upper ridge translates in
from the southwest.  -KT

winds gusting to 15 to 20 kts this afternoon.

At KCOS and KPUB, VFR conditions are expected for the next 24 hours
with winds becoming east to southeasterly this afternoon. Wind gusts
of 15 to 20 kts are expected this afternoon before diminishing this
evening. There is an outside chance of a thunderstorm near KCOS or
KPUB late tonight, but chances are too low at this time to include
in the TAF.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Isolated strong to potentially severe thunderstorms will be possible
over the far southeastern plains from this afternoon into
tonight. The most intense storms will be capable of producing hail
up to the size of golf balls, wind gusts around 60 mph, and
hazardous lightning.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Critical fire weather conditions will be possible for Friday
across the mountains, valleys and southern I-25 corridor as breezy
southwest winds and low humidity values spread up from the Desert
Southwest. These conditions will spread eastward for Saturday
with high fire danger and critical fire weather conditions
possible across most of south central and southeast Colorado as
winds increase ahead of the next storm system.

A cold front will move through the region Saturday night bringing
a better chance for showers and thunderstorms to much of southern
Colorado Sunday and Monday. The main threat with thunderstorms
will be lightning and locally heavy rainfall. Some small hail will
be possible with the stronger storms over and near the mountains.
Temperatures will be cooler with lighter winds which will help
mitigate the high fire danger some, though newer burn scars may be
at greater risk for localized flash flooding should a stronger
storm impact these areas.

Isolated thunderstorms will be possible Tuesday across the
mountains, then drier and warmer weather will return for the
middle of next week.

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria will be possible
across the far southeastern Colorado plains from this afternoon
into this evening.
