Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system will lift from the Great Lakes into
Quebec. A cold front associated with this low will cross our
region on Sunday. Another low is expected to cross from the
Carolinas off the Delmarva coast on Monday. Finally, a third low
pressure system is expected to develop off the Georgia coast
late Tuesday, then quickly lift northeast near our region by
Wednesday. High pressure should build in through the remainder
of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Will allow Dense Fog Advisory to expire at 1 am. Dense fog has
become patchy, and should not be widespread into daybreak. A
frontal boundary remains stalled out near or just north of the
area, and moisture remains trapped near the surface near the
boundary. Areas of fog with some dense fog will persist into the
overnight hours.

Otherwise, south of this area, scattered to overcast high level
clouds are expected this evening before clouds lower some later
this evening and overnight. A cold front will swing through our
region late tonight through the day on Sunday. There is a small
chance for rain showers ahead of the cold front both tonight
and Sunday morning across portions of the area. Because these
showers should be coming in the warm sector, ahead of the cold
front, it should be all rain and any rainfall amounts will be
light.

The strongest cold air advection is expected to come well behind the
cold front. Consequently, lows tonight will be in the 40s and 50s,
and tomorrow, the coastal plains could once again get into the lower
60s while areas north and west of the fall line will stay in the 40s
and 50s.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The big story for this part of the forecast will be the low pressure
system that is still on track to affect the area for Monday with
rain and snow. In fact there continues to be a trend in the forecast
guidance with this system being stronger, tracking farther north,
and bringing the area heavier precipitation. In terms of the
details, to start the period Sunday evening a diffuse cold front
will be over the area with a baroclinic zone extending south
and west in association with this towards the northern Gulf
coast where there will be a developing low. A progressive but
sharp upper level trough will interact with this low and help it
continue to develop as it moves north and east through Sunday
night towards North Carolina. In terms of sensible weather
across our forecast area, clouds will increase with the leading
edge of precip from this system just reaching Delmarva into SE
PA and southern NJ near sunrise. Important to note, we won't
really get a strong push of cold air into the area ahead of this
system as the aformentioned front will remain hung up near or
just to our south. As a result, lows Sunday night will generally
be in the 30s to low 40s (coolest north, warmest south) so when
precip arrives by Monday morning it will most likely be rain
from the I-95 corridor and points south (where temps should be
in the upper 30s to low 40s).

The forecast gets a bit trickier for Monday as the low continues to
deepen as it moves north and east off the coast likely passing just
to our south. There remains some uncertainty in the exact track,
speed of the system, and how fast the low will intensify and this
could have a bearing on precip types and amounts. But in general,
expect precip to over spread the area Monday morning (likely
starting by mid morning near Philly) with again mainly rain at the
onset from near I-95 and points south with mixed rain/snow likely
not too far north of here and mainly snow as you get up into the
Lehigh Valley, southern Poconos, and NW NJ. In fact with the onset
of the precip causing evaporational cooling along with winds
remaining mainly from the north this could really limit temperatures
from going up much. For this reason we trended colder than most of
our forecast guidance with the temp forecast for Monday. Forecast
continues to get even trickier by midday into the afternoon. By this
time as the deepening surface low moves off the coast and the
shortwave aloft moves through this will result in temperatures
cooling aloft and eventually towards the surface. As a result think
that the rain is likely to end as a shot of snow around mid to late
afternoon even as far south as the urban corridor and it could even
fall at a good clip for an hour or two. The big question is will it
last long enough, fall heavily enough, and be cold enough at the
surface for it to stick that far south. At this point we keep
accumulating snow just north of the Philly to Trenton corridor but
it will be close! A coating to an inch or so looks likely from
northern Chester County N/E through the northern Philly suburbs with
upwards of 1-2 inches of snow likely as you continue to go north
toward the souther Poconos and NW NJ. Again, with temperatures being
marginal confidence is moderate at best so it's possible these
amounts could end up being a bit higher and/or some accumulation
makes it as far south as Philadelphia itself but this is this the
current thinking.

Also with the Monday system, it should be noted that with precip
amounts trending up that the rain could actually fall moderate to
heavy for a time around midday over Delmarva into southern NJ.
Likely not enough to cause any real hydro issues being nuisance
/ poor drainage issues but storm totals here look to be upwards
of 1 to 1.5 inches. Even as far north as the urban corridor
total precip amounts with the system could be around .75 inches
with amounts decreasing to the .25 to .50 inch range north of
here (where some of this is likely to fall as snow).

Due to the rain/snow and the region remaining on the colder side of
the system with northerly winds temps won't go up much for Monday
with highs mainly in the upper 30s to low 40s except low to mid 30s
over the southern Poconos and NW NJ.

For Monday night, the low quickly races away with clearing skies and
a stronger, secondary cold front moving through. Lows by Tuesday
morning look to be in the 20s to around 30 south so any remaining
standing water or slush will freeze potentially causing some icy
conditions on roads. This will be followed by a mainly sunny but
chilly day for Tuesday as transient arctic high pressure builds in
to our north setting the stage for the next system. Highs only look
to only be near 30 north and in the upper 30s to around 40
south.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Confidence is building in regards to the mid week coastal storm and
its potential impacts. There remain some slight differences between
the models, such as timing and placement of the low, which could
impact the final track and specifics with the forecast such as snow
amounts and the location of the rain/snow mixing line. But it's
becoming even more likely that a significant snowfall event will
occur for portions of our forecast area Wednesday into Wednesday
night.

The latest guidance has trended a little slower with the low, which
could potentially lead to more snow as more precipitation could fall
coincidentally with the cold air. The models are in good
agreement with the location of the high moving across southeast
Canada Tuesday night into Wednesday, which will set up the cold
air across the region. By Tuesday night and Wednesday, an area
of low pressure is forecast to move up the southeast coast into
the Mid Atlantic region, then continue to our east and out to
sea Wednesday night into Thursday. The current track from the
model guidance keeps the low near the coast as it passes by.
This will bring precipitation to the entire forecast area,
possibly starting as early as Wednesday morning, and continuing
through the day into Wednesday night. With the current track,
the forecast is for snow to start virtually everywhere Wednesday
morning, before a mix and/or change to rain begins to lift
northward into portions of southern/central Delaware and
Maryland, as well as southern/eastern New Jersey; just south and
east of the I-95 corridor. Along and north of the I-95
corridor, the forecast is for snow during the duration of the
event. Eventually by Wednesday evening and overnight, cold air
will move back in for all places, and everyone could change back
over to snow where it changed to a mix or rain during the day.
The precipitation types will be dependent on the track of the
low and thermal profiles, so this could all change in the coming
days. Although we do not have specific snowfall amounts
forecast yet, all guidance is pointing to a significant snowfall
accumulation for eastern Pennsylvania, much of New Jersey,
northern Delaware and northern Maryland.

Another concern becoming more likely with the storm will be strong,
gusty winds, with wind gusts of at least 25-35 mph possible,
especially near the coast where even higher gusts could occur.
Speaking of the coast, with strong, steady northeast flow, and
being only two days removed from the new moon, there will also
be a chance for coastal flooding.

On Thursday, the ECMWF hangs on to some snowfall as the low pulls
away, but the GFS and Canadian remain dry. So there will remain a
chance of snow during the morning Thursday, but probably not of much
significance since that will all be Wednesday and Wednesday night.

After the coastal storm, the rest of the week is expected to remain
dry as high pressure is forecast to build across the Mid Atlantic
and northeast region. Cool but dry conditions can be expected
Thursday into Saturday.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...Mostly VFR conditions are expected tonight across
southeast Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, Delaware, and
Maryland. However, IFR and MVFR conditions with low clouds and
fog will persist for portions of northeast Pennsylvania and
northern New Jersey through this evening.

Winds will be east to northeast for northeast Pennsylvania and
northern New Jersey through this evening, before becoming light
and variable and eventually light out of southwest. Elsewhere,
south-southeast winds 5-10 knots will shift to the southwest
this evening and become light and variable for some areas. We
have added non-convective low level wind shear to the TAFS for a
few hours later this evening as guidance continues to indicate
the potential. Moderate confidence.

Sunday...VFR conditions expected. Southwesterly winds will gradually
shift to westerly and eventually northwesterly through the day. Wind
speeds of 10 to 15 kt with gusts near 20kt.
Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Sunday night...Clouds increase but it should stay VFR through
the night. Light west to northwest winds. Moderate confidence.

Monday...Widespread sub-VFR conditions likely. Mainly rain in
the morning from KILG/KPHL/KPNE/KTTN south through KMIV/KACY
with snow, possibly mixed with rain at times at KRDG/KABE. It
should be noted though that precip may end as a brief period of
snow mid to late afternoon as far south as KILG/KPHL/KPNE/KTTN.
N/NW winds generally around 10 knots or less except 10-15 knots
at KACY. Moderate confidence overall but low confidence in
precipitation types and timing of precipitation type changes.

Monday night through Tuesday...VFR. NW winds generally 5-10 kt
with some higher gusts. High confidence.

Tuesday night...Mostly VFR. Winds shift to the northeast 5-10 knots.

Wednesday-Wednesday night...Diminishing conditions to MVFR then
IFR with snow for many areas, except rain likely for southern
areas. Significant snowfall possible. Northeast winds 10-15
knots, gusting 20-30 knots possible. Low confidence.

Thursday...Conditions may improve in the morning, before
lowering back to MVFR by the afternoon. North to northwest
winds 5-10 knots. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
Winds and seas should mostly stay below Small Craft advisory
conditions through tomorrow. There is one exception however. Along
the Atlantic coastal waters, winds could gust close to 25 kt and
seas could get close to 5 ft overnight. For now though have held off
on issuing an SCA as I have kept the forecast just below SCA
criteria since SCA conditions are less likely to occur this time of
year with southwesterly/southerly flow.

Outlook...

Monday through Monday night...SCA conditions expected for
Monday into Monday night and it's possible wind gusts could
briefly reach Gale force over the southern waters around
midday/early afternoon.

Tuesday...Conditions will likely be at SCA levels into the
morning but should be below SCA levels by the afternoon.

Tuesday night...Conditions expected to be below advisory levels.

Wednesday-Wednesday night...At least Small Craft Advisory levels
expected, with a chance of gale force conditions becoming more
