.SYNOPSIS...
A surface trough will develop across the east coast states as
temperatures warm each day through the weekend into early next
week. A weak cold front is expected to approach the region
Monday before stalling. Another cold front may approach late in
the week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
The trough is expected to weaken even further through the day.
None the less, it may provide enough low level convergence for
shower and thunderstorm development (as we have seen overnight).
However, still expect this activity to be primarily confined to
Delmarva and far southeastern NJ where there will be more low
level moisture.
As for temperatures and heat index values, the warming trend
continues today. With most of the region getting into the lower
90s. We are seeing some dry air advection west of the trough
with dewpoints west of the wind shift in the mid 60s (and even
some upper 50s in the southern Poconos). Even with the dew point
gradient likely weakening and limited mixing, dew points should
be low enough to keep heat index values below 100 across much of
the region (in interior Delmarva, there could be some locations
that have heat index right around 100 this afternoon). So at
this point, it looks like for today we will technically stay
below any heat advisory or warning criteria.
One complication with the temperature forecast is that a sea
breeze is expected to develop. With the inland low level flow
likely being very weak, the sea breeze may be able to progress
pretty far inland, which could keep coastal plains locations a
few degrees below the current forecast, but I'm not confident on
how far inland it will reach.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT/...
Overnight southwesterly flow is expected to set up, which will
set the stage for additional warm air and moisture advection.
The flow will still be rather weak overnight, so we still may
have enough radiational cooling for lows near or slightly below
70 (with the exception of Philly and the immediate surrounding
suburbs due to urban heat island effects.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The main concern for the long term period will continue to be
the building heat for next week. Excessive Heat Watch remains in
place.
On Sunday, a lee-side/thermal surface trough will remain in
place across the east coast states. Thicknesses and 925/850 mb
temperatures rise some Sunday from Saturday, so Sunday will
likely be a little warmer than Sunday. Dewpoints will also be a
little higher than Saturday, so the Heat Index values will
increase. Therefore we will keep the Excessive Heat Watch up.
Little to no precipitation is expected as there is not much
vertical moisture or short wave/vorticity impulses expected.
Monday continues to be the hottest day forecast over the next
week. Thicknesses and 925/850 mb temperatures max out on Monday,
and the forecast has widespread mid to upper 90s; however, it
will be possible for some 100 degree readings to be reached. The
additional concern is that dewpoints rise more on Monday, and
combined with the high temperatures, very dangerous Heat Index
values will develop. The surface trough will remain in place
Monday, while a frontal boundary will be approaching from the
northwest. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms,
however, they are not expected to be very widespread. Although,
anyone who does get a shower or thunderstorm will have their
temperatures knocked down. The front will likely stall out near
the area overnight Monday, so there will remain a chance of
showers and thunderstorms overnight.
The front is expected to lift back northward on Tuesday, while
a lee- side/thermal surface trough reestablishes itself across
the area. This will allow temperatures to remain warm, although
not as warm as Monday as thicknesses and 925/850 temperatures
drop some. However, dewpoints will remain high, so heat index
values will remain elevated, but not as extreme as Monday. With
the front lifting northward and a surface trough reestablishing
itself, any short wave/vorticity impulses aloft will help create
a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms Tuesday into
Tuesday night.
On Wednesday, similar conditions to Tuesday are expected with
the surface trough in place, and a couple of short
wave/vorticity impulses aloft moving across the area.
Temperatures are forecast a degree or two lower, but with
dewpoints remaining high, heat index values will remain elevated
for many areas. There will continue to be a chance of showers
and thunderstorms Wednesday and Wednesday night.
A cold front is forecast to make its way into the area Thursday
into Thursday night and slowly move offshore into Friday.
Temperatures will again be slightly lower than the day before as
thicknesses and 925/850 mb temperatures lower slightly.
Dewpoints will be slightly lower as well, so heat index values
may be just slightly below advisory levels. With the front
moving into the area, as several short waves/vorticity impulses
move across the area, there will continue to be chances of
showers and thunderstorms for the end of the week.
