Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
1231 PM EDT Sun Apr 12 2020
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure off the East Coast will move east as a frontal
system approaches from the west into tonight. Low pressure
passes over the Great Lakes Monday while its associated cold
front moves through the area late Monday into Monday night. High
pressure builds in for the middle of the week. A series of
upper disturbances will move across by the end of the week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
With return southerly flow developing as high pressure moves
eastward, dew points will begin to rise this afternoon. Have
adjusted dew points to match current observations and trends.
Otherwise forecast remains on track. Mid to high level clouds
are beginning to move in ahead of an approaching system
resulting in a dry, but partly to mostly cloudy day.
Aloft, building heights and ridging will all translate into
warmer temperatures for the area. Highs will be in the lower 60s
away from the coast and much of New York City, while highs in
the 50s are expected elsewhere. Caveat will be onshore winds and
clouds
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Chances for precipitation will increase from west to east
tonight as the warm front associated with the frontal system
approaches from the southwest. Much of any precipitation will be
limited to western section prior to midnight. However, rain
showers will continue to overspread the entire area late
tonight, with most areas seeing rain by daybreak Monday morning.
Low pressure associated with this frontal system over the middle
of the country on Sunday will move northeast and track over the
Great Lakes Sunday night. The increase in pressure gradient will
allow winds to increase overnight, however the real windy
conditions will hold off until Monday. Southerly wind gusts of
30 to 40 mph are possible across coastal areas by daybreak
Monday.
As for temperatures, they will be warm for this time of year, as
warm advection ahead of the warm front continues. Expect
temperatures to remain constant or rise slightly through the
night, with lows in the 50s region-wide.
Monday will see the warm front lift north of the region. A
period of moderate to heavy rainfall is possible as this does
so, as this will be a focus for some lift. Dew points are
expected to rise into the 50s and PWATs of well of 1 to 2 inches
are seen in the models, anomalously high for this time of year.
While surface based instability does not look too impressive,
MUCAPE values in the ECMWF and more so in the NAM are about 500
to 1000 J/kg. While not expecting any widespread events at this
time, some severe weather is possible during the morning and
afternoon hours on Monday, especially when taking into account
0-6 km shear of 50-70+ kt, with some directional shear as well.
Therefore, have continued to mention a chance for thunderstorms.
Would not be surprised if there was an isolated tornado that
moves through some portion of the forecast area as well.
The main concern with this system however will be the winds.
60-70+ kt seen in the model forecast soundings at 950 mb. This
yields wind gusts 65-70 mph at the coast, and as high as 60-65
mph inland, mainly the higher elevations and exposed areas such
as along the Hudson River. Can not totally rule out isolated
75-80 mph gusts across Long Island and coastal SE CT, especially
if these winds occur in a thunderstorm.
Temperatures will continue to be on the warm side, with highs in
the upper 60s away from the coast. Cooler conditions expected
along the coast thanks to the cooler ocean waters, with highs
around 60s, except upper 50s for coastal southeast Connecticut
and the Twin Forks of Long Island. This marine layer may help to
stabilize these areas, and heavy rain although still possible
(since there looks to be some elevated instability), is less
likely here.
The associated cold front will move through late in the day
Monday into Monday night.
&&
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A potent upper low over the Great Lakes continues to deepen as
it moves northeast into the Canadian Maritimes to begin the
extended. As a result, deep southwest flow dominates through
Wednesday. A series of weak shortwaves moves through Wednesday
night and again on Friday.
Winds should begin to relax by Tuesday morning as the cold front
pushes offshore and high pressure builds from the west. Low
pressure develops along the departing cold front well to our
southwest on Wednesday. Model consensus continues to take this
quick-moving offshore system south of our area on Wednesday.
Given we are on the northern periphery of this system, not
anticipating much in the way of precipitation at this time.
High pressure builds in from the south for Thursday, and a
weaker system approaches the region from the Great Lakes,
bringing shower chances again to end the week.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
**High Impact Weather Event Expected on Monday**
VFR today as high pressure moves southeast through this morning, and
then gradually offshore this afternoon. A powerful storm system
approaches tonight and impacts the terminals on Monday.
Southerly winds gradually increase this morning with speeds 10-15
G20kt by early afternoon. There is the potential for speeds to
increase to 20-25mph with gusts 25-30 kt at KJFK late this
afternoon/eve, with 15G20-25kt for remainder of coastal terminals.
Winds may temporarily veer to the SW for KEWR in the late
afternoon/early eve push. Gusts diminish this evening, but
winds remain at 12 to 16 kt.
Conditions deteriorate late tonight and Monday with conditions
falling to IFR or less in rain. The wind will be the main issue
as speeds increase through the morning reaching 30-40kt with
gusts up to 60kt. Localized higher gusts will be possible.
Also included wind shear as a low level jet will produce wind
speeds around 60-70kt around 2000 ft. Low chance of thunder
Monday morning, but chances too low to include in the TAF right
now.
.OUTLOOK FOR 12Z MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY...
.Monday...IFR or lower in rain and possible thunder, improving
late. S winds 30-40G50-60 kt near the coast, and 25-30G40-50
kt interior. LLWS.
.Monday night...Becoming VFR with a cold frontal passage.
W winds G15-20kt.
.Tuesday...VFR. W Winds G15-20kt.
.Wednesday and Thursday...MVFR possible at times in showers.
&&
.MARINE...
A light southerly wind gradually increases today, with SCA wind
speeds possible by evening.
Wind speeds are expected to rapidly increase very late Sunday
night into Monday morning, with gusts 55-65 kt likely on all
waters from late morning into the afternoon. with seas building
as high as 22 ft out east. Storm force winds may take until
early Mon evening to diminish out east.
Conditions should gradually improve thereafter into Tuesday
morning as the storm lifts out and a cold front pushes well
offshore. Seas will remain elevated out in the ocean waters,
before diminishing Wednesday morning. Winds and seas will again
begin to increase by Friday afternoon for the ocean waters.
&&
.HYDROLOGY...
QPF in excess of 1-2 inches is likely late Sunday night into
Monday, which could at least result in minor poor drainage
flooding. Higher amounts will be possible in thunderstorms on
Monday, or across the interior due to orographic lift in a
strong S/SE flow.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Potential for minor to locally moderate shoreline impacts during
Monday afternoon high tide with combination of water levels
touching or slightly exceeding minor flood thresholds, and high
surf of 13-17 ft on the Atlantic ocean beachfront and 4-6 ft on
Coastal CT shoreline.
&&
.EQUIPMENT...
NYC NOAA Weather Radio Station KWO35 (162.55 MHz) is undergoing
its final stages of testing, and is operating at full power.
