Hurricane Laura continues to bear down on the Gulf Coast and will
make landfall overnight near the TX/LA border. While the primary
impacts will not be felt across the Mid-South for another 24
hours, we're already seeing tropical rainfall rates across
portions of the CWA this evening. A rainband has developed from
near Little Rock, to Forrest City, and southeast toward Oxford.
Precipitable water (PWAT) is near 2.25" over the MS Delta
Counties, decreasing to around 2" farther north and east. Rainfall
rates in this convection are in the 3-4"/hr range but the band
has been somewhat progressive, limiting the flood threat. However,
further development and storm motions nearly parallel to the band
orientation may increase this threat through 06z. PoPs will be
increased for the next several hours based on output from the HREF
and some of the experimental CAMs.

After this band finally dissipates, we anticipate mostly dry
conditions through midday tomorrow. Diurnal showers, and a few
storms are expected to develop by 18z within the warm, humid air
mass. Winds will begin to increase across the Delta during the
afternoon as the remnants of Laura approach. Winds will increase
further during the evening hours, approaching 15-25 mph across the
northwest half of the CWA. Winds may gust to 30-40 mph (stronger
within rainbands) in this area late tomorrow night and Friday as
the circulation tracks north of I-40. Total rainfall amounts
through Friday evening look to be 2-4" for all but the southeast
portion of the CWA with localized higher amounts anticipated. A
Flash Flood Watch may be needed as we move forward.

Skies are partly cloudy across the Mid-South this afternoon with
temperatures ranging from the upper 70s to lower 90s. A few
isolated showers are moving north across northern sections of the
Mid-South this afternoon. At 1 pm CDT, the center of Hurricane
Laura was about 200 miles south of Lake Charles, Louisiana with
winds of 140 mph making it a Category 4 hurricane.

The showers that are moving across the Mid-South this afternoon
should be out of the area by this evening with mainly dry
conditions tonight. Temperatures will be warm with lows Thursday
morning in the low to mid 70s. Laura is expected to make landfall
somewhere near the Texas/Louisiana border late tonight and will
track close to the border for much of the day on Thursday. Rain
from the outer bands for Laura may begin to move into the Mid-
South on Thursday. Temperatures will be quite warm on Thursday
with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Thursday night, the
center of Laura will track across southwest Arkansas into northern
sections of the state. Coverage of showers and thunderstorm will
increase on Thursday night with an increased threat for tornadoes.
Heavy rainfall will also be possible but the heaviest rainfall
should remain west of the Mid-South.

Friday should be the day when the Mid-South will feel the main
effects from what is left of Laura as the center of circulation
moves across northeast Arkansas and into western Kentucky. There
will still be a threat of tornadoes along with a heavy rain
threat. As the remnants of Laura move away from the Mid-South
Friday night, the heavy rain threat and tornado threat will end.

A cold front will move into the Mid-South on Saturday bringing
more thunderstorms to the region from Friday night through
Saturday night. The front is expected to stall out across north
Mississippi on Sunday and Monday with more thunderstorms expected
both days. The front will move north as a warm front by Monday
evening with the boundary remaining to our north for Tuesday and
into next Wednesday. This will keep a chance of thunderstorms
across the Mid-South for Monday night through next Wednesday.

Temperatures will turn a little cooler behind the front for Sunday
through next Wednesday.

A line of showers and thunderstorms continues to slowly move
northward. This line is impacting KMEM and KJBR and may impact
KTUP over the next hour. The line should start to weaken and
eventually dissipate by 9-10Z. Tranquil conditions will persist
thereafter until the afternoon when outer bands from Hurricane
Laura begin to move up the Mississippi Delta. Kept vicinity
wording at KMEM at 21Z, KTUP at 22Z, and KJBR at 23Z. Added
vicinity wording at KMKL starting 01Z. E-SE winds of 5-8 KTS
expected through the overnight period. Winds will then begin to
increase after 15Z and will continue to steadily increase over the
course of the afternoon into tomorrow evening. Kept low-level
wind shear at KMEM starting 01Z.

Major Hurricane Laura will make landfall this evening near the
Texas/Louisiana border, but generate no hazardous weather for the
Midsouth through tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Hurricane Laura will weaken to a tropical storm over southwest
Arkansas Thursday evening, and further weaken to a tropical
depression over north central Arkansas by sunrise Friday.

Thursday night... There is a Slight Risk of damaging winds and
tornadoes over east central Arkansas. To the east and north of the
Slight Risk area, there is a Marginal Risk of damaging winds over
northwest Mississippi, the Memphis metro area, and northeast
Arkansas. There is a Slight Risk of Flash Flooding along and west
of the Mississippi River.

Friday... There is a Marginal Risk for damaging winds and tornadoes
over all the Midsouth. There is a Moderate Risk of Flash Flooding
over northeast Arkansas, the Missouri bootheel, and far northwest
Tennessee. A Flash Flood Watch may be issued for this area later
today. To south, there is a Slight Risk for Flash flooding along
and north of the Interstate 40 corridor, including the Memphis
metro area.

At 1006 PM CDT...a strong thunderstorm producing pea size hail or
larger and winds at least 40 mph was located near Coldwater, or near
Senatobia, moving north at 30 mph.

Very heavy rain along with continuous cloud to ground lightning are
also possible with this thunderstorm.

People in northwestern Marshall...eastern DeSoto and central Tate
Counties should monitor this storm closely.
