.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 331 PM EDT Fri Apr 17 2020
Light snow and pockets of drizzle will will diminish through the
early evening. Cloudy will gradually diminish from northwest to
southeast tonight, although at least patchy low clouds may linger
through much of the night across portions of northern Indiana and
northwest Ohio. Partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies are expected
for Saturday. Low temperatures tonight will range from the mid 20s
to around 30. High temperatures on Saturday will range from the
upper 40s to mid 50s.

.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Saturday)

Mid/upper level dry slot has punched into northern Indiana this
afternoon which has diminished precip rates across much of northern
Indiana and northwest Ohio. The leading edge of this dry slot has
promoted persistence of elevated instability atop lingering mid
level frontogenesis axis across southern Lower Michigan. Up to 1
inch of additional accumulation is possible over next few hours
across south central Lower Michigan, but this snow should taper by
the 21Z-22Z timeframe.
Otherwise for tonight, low level subsidence will become
established in wake of this system. Low level inversion based
between 900 and 850 mb may allow low clouds to persist across much
of the night particularly across far northeast Indiana into
northwest Ohio. Low level cold advection in wake of departing mid
level trough will be somewhat modest tonight and if clouds do
persist through much of the night, areas with more expansive cloud
cover may struggle to drop below the 30 degree mark. No changes
will be made to the Freeze Warning, with at least a potential of
dropping into the mid-upper 20s if better clearing can be realized
later tonight.
Quick return of westerly low level flow is in store Saturday
which will be accompanied by decent warm advection. Low level
height gradient will quickly ramp up Saturday afternoon as sfc
high drifts across the Ohio Valley while next sfc trough emerges
across the northern Great Lakes to the Central Plains. Mixing
depths are not overly impressive on Saturday, but strength of low
level wind field should allow for some 30 to 35 mph gusts
(strongest across the west/northwest) during the afternoon. Temps
should moderate into the upper 40s to mid 50s on Saturday.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday Night through Friday)

Next sfc trough/cool front will slowly sag across the southern Great
Lakes by early Sunday. There could be enough weak elevated moisture
return for some light rain/sprinkles to survive into southern Lower
Michigan late Saturday night, but will keep majority of low rain
chances on Sunday as this trough drops into the area. Temperatures
behind this trough could drop below freezing again for later Sunday
night into Monday morning. A stronger upper trough will drive
another cold front into the region around the Tuesday period, but
moisture will be lacking with this system.
Temperatures should quickly moderate for midweek as a couple of
Pacific systems bring increased chances of rain. The first of
these systems will encounter some lingering blocking across
eastern CONUS which will probably keep sfc reflection south of the
area into the Ohio Valley. Potential of fuller latitude trough
looks possible toward the end of this forecast valid period for
next Thursday/Friday.

A trend toward lighter snow and drizzle is expected this afternoon
as deeper moisture/ascent associated with a frontal wave shifts
east into Ohio. Flight conditions will likely linger in IFR during
this time before improving late afternoon/evening. Dry conditions
and light winds otherwise into tonight and Saturday morning,
though there is some concern for fog/stratus re-development as
near sfc moisture gets trapped behind today's storm system.
