The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued a Lakeshore Flood Warning and a Beach Hazard Statement for dangerous swim conditions, which is in effect from 8 PM EDT /7 PM CDT/ this evening to 11 AM EDT /10 AM CDT/ Tuesday. * LAKE SHORE FLOODING... * HIGH WAVE ACTION AND DANGEROUS SWIMMING CONDITIONS EXPECTED... * STRONG RIP CURRENTS EXPECTED... * STRONG STRUCTURAL CURRENTS EXPECTED... * OVERVIEW/POTENTIAL IMPACTS...Rapidly fluctuating wave heights, as well as water levels, are possible with a line of strong to severe thunderstorms as well as in its wake. This will cause an increased risk for dangerous rip currents and structural currents as well as lake shore flooding tonight into Tuesday morning. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Lakeshore Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or imminent along the lake. Residents on or near the shore in the warned area should be alert for rising water...and take appropriate action to protect life and property. Life threatening waves and currents are expected at the beaches. People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from the shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaks in sandbars. Rip currents can sweep you into deeper water. Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure. Structural currents can sweep you out into deeper water along the pier structure. && $$
