inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines
and tidal waterways. For the Beach Hazards Statement a strong
north to south long shore current is expected.

* IMPACTS...Minor street flooding occurs on the sound-side of
Carolina Beach, along Canal Drive from Starfish Lane northward.
Water gets into yards along the sound, but the street flooding
is mainly the result of salt water backing up through the storm
drains. Heavy rain at the time of high tide exacerbates this
problem.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Battleship Road and USS North Carolina Road with 12 to 18
inches of water over the lowest spots on each road. Water over
six inches deep along River Road about a quarter mile south of
The Cape Boulevard. Water covering more than two blocks of
Water Street near Market Street with as much as a foot of
water in the center of Water Street just south of Market
Street.

flood Pine Avenue. Longshore currents can sweep swimmers and
surfers into rip currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous
areas. Often, if the longshore current is strong enough, it will
sweep swimmers off their feet, making it difficult to return to
shore.

drains. Longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into
rip currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous areas. Often,
if the longshore current is strong enough, it will sweep
swimmers off their feet, making it difficult to return to shore.
Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore
into deeper water.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be
closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of
unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone
property.
Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.

.SYNOPSIS...
Cool high pressure will build into the region this weekend and
persist across the area through the middle part of next week.
&&
.UPDATE...
No significant changes were made to the forecast. Low
stratocumulus near the coast will thin out inland overnight, but
a plume of cirrus originating from Tropical Storm Beta in the
western Gulf of Mexico will keep skies mostly cloudy. Any
lingering patchy drizzle along the coast or offshore will
dissipate over the next hour or two with dry conditions
anticipated overnight.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Cold front continues to progress across the Carolinas into tonight
as cold air advection brings in drier and cooler air than normal.
Low temperatures tonight will drop into the lower 60s, and highs
Saturday will be noticeably cooler in the low to mid 70s. Saturday
night will be even cooler with many locations having lows in the mid
to upper 50s. Minimal chances for measurable precipitation as high
pressure takes control of the weather for the next 36 hours, but a
few pockets of drizzle could occur through tonight with mostly
cloudy skies through Saturday.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Essentially a temperature forecast through the period as the
mid level and surface pressure pattern dictate. At the mid
levels, a ridge will remain more or less in place across the
upper midwest which will constantly be providing a wedge of high
pressure east of the Appalachians. Highs will be in the lower
70s to around 70 and lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The
cooler readings will occur Monday.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Some slow changes expected in the extended as the wedge
configuration breaks down. Still not much indication of rainfall
as the tropical activity in The Gulf of Mexico, which seems to
be the next player, moves little with the latest medium range
guidance. Temperatures will moderate slowly through the period
via basically air mass modification but remain below climatology
for the most part.

.AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure building in from the north will bring gusty
north-northeast winds for the next 24 hours. Stratocumulus with
bases ranging from 3000 feet on the coast to 5000-6000 feet
inland will continue through most of the night, perhaps
fragmenting inland after 06Z. Coastal airports including ILM,
CRE, and MYR could see temporary dips below 3000 foot ceilings
this evening. Gusts of 15-20 kt this evening will increase to
20-25 kt after daybreak Saturday.
Extended Outlook...High pressure brings VFR conditions through
mid to late next week.

.MARINE...
Today through Saturday Night...Rough seas ahead for the next 36
hours as distance wave energy from the tropics arrives along
the Carolina coastline. Several wave trains will be present with
a south 7 second wave diminishing by tonight, a northeast wind
wave around 8 seconds and a long 16 to 18 second period swell
from the southeast. Seas 4 to 6 feet tonight will increase into
early Saturday/Saturday night between 6 and 10 feet beyond 5 NM
and potentially 6+ foot waves near area beaches, jetties, and
inlets along the NC coastline. Strong northeast winds between 25
and 30 kts with gusts very near 35 kts could bring some small
pockets of gale conditions beyond 15 NM especially Saturday
night, but thresholds may be just shy of issuing a warning in
place of the current small craft advisory. Mariners in smaller
vessels or with limited experience in rough seas should take
extreme caution this weekend with the sea conditions worsening.
Sunday through Wednesday...
Rugged conditions for marine community through most of the
period. Strong northeast winds certainly in Small Craft Criteria and
possibly even marginal Gale at times will be in place Sunday and
Monday. The elusive smaller scale surges make the latter even more
of a possibility but are certainly a challenge predicting. Winds may
diminish by mid week as the pattern changes. Regarding significant
seas, rugged as well as synoptic winds would be enough to warrant
Small Craft seas but added to spectrum will be longer period swell
from a busy Atlantic Tropical basin.
