.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday night)

Water vapor imagery shows an upper impulse lifting over northeast
KS with additional shortwave energy approaching northern Baja. At
the surface, low pressure remains over eastern CO.

Showers are expected continue lifting northeast early this morning
and should be exiting the forecast area toward sunrise. Fog and
drizzle will remain likely this morning as we maintain some
isentropic upglide right off of the surface. Areas west of I-135
will have the best chance to see fog this morning with some areas
seeing visibilities less than a mile.

Should finally see some sunshine today as some drier mid level air
moves in. Strong warm advection will also provide above normal
temps today, with highs toping out in the 70s for much of the
area.

Strong 850mb-700mb moisture transport is still expected tonight
in response to the approaching shortwave. Models also remain
consistent in showing precipitable water values around 275% of
normal. So currently expecting a widespread area of showers and
storms to develop over southwest OK/northern TX and track
northeast overnight. Still think that a few severe storms will be
possible with quarter size hail and winds to 60 mph the main
threats. Wouldn't be surprised to see the storms in a broken line
racing off to the northeast late tonight. Still feel that flooding
remains possible, especially with grounds very saturated.
However, feel that widespread flooding will be mitigated by the
speed of the expected precip, much like is occurring now.
Southeast KS remains the most likely area to see some minor
flooding.

By 12z Thu, most of the precip is expected to be east of the area
with a deep surface low situated over northwest KS. Attention will
then shift to very strong southwest winds Thu that will shift to
the northwest Thu evening. Sustained speeds in the 30-35 mph range
continue to look reasonable with gusts likely around 50 mph.
Confidence is high that a wind advisory will eventually be needed
for most of the area. In addition, these strong winds will also
have an impact on burning conditions. See fire wx section below.

Much colder air is expected on Fri as this wave departs into the
Great Lakes region. Highs on Fri are expected to be around 20 to
25 degrees lower than today and Thu.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Tuesday)

By 12z Sat,there is good model agreement in an upper impulse
diving southeast across the northern Plains with additional upper
energy over the Central Great Basin. Should see precip chances
increase Sat night and may continue into Sun as the wave over the
Great Basin moves out into the Rockies and eventually central
Plains. Not expecting much of an impact from this area of precip.
Upper pattern looks to remain active to start the work week as the
area remains in west/sw flow aloft with a series of upper
perturbations moving through.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon)
Issued at 1258 PM CDT Wed Mar 18 2020

Early this afternoon, low stratus has been slow to erode.
Currently, MVFR cigs are present in central Kansas (KRSL, KGBD,
KHUT, and KSLN), IFR cigs are present in south central Kansas
(KICT), and LIFR cigs are present in southeast Kansas (KCNU).
Latest satellite imagery shows the stratus deck slowly eroding
from southwest to northeast, and this should continue throughout
the afternoon. As a result, expect a return to VFR at KICT and
KHUT today, though airports further north may remain more cloudy.

Attention then turns to chances for showers and thunderstorms
overnight tonight. Latest models bring the storms in from the
south beginning late in the evening or around midnight. The storms
will then progress across the forecast area during the early
morning hours on Thursday. Once these storms move out by late
morning, however, southwest winds will pick up significantly
across the area. Gusts may begin to approach 30kts or so by around
18z tomorrow, though they are expected to become even stronger
throughout the afternoon.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 326 AM CDT Wed Mar 18 2020

Very high to extreme fire danger will be likely Thu afternoon and
early evening.

Southwest winds Thu are forecast to be in the 30-35 mph range with
gusts reaching 50 mph. Winds will flip around to the northwest
Thu evening and will remain very high. RH values are expected to
be in the 25 to 35% range, with the lower values west of I-135.
Current thinking is that recent rains have resulted in a quick
green up for areas generally east of I-135, which should lower the
fire threat. However, it appears grasses are still fairly cured
west of I-135, especially along and west of Highway 14.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of Central Kansas,
South Central Kansas and Southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Fog will affect areas generally along and west of Interstate 135
this morning. Some ares will see visibility reduced to less than a
mile at times. Use caution if traveling this morning.

Storms are expected to overspread the area tonight. The stronger
storms will be capable of quarter size hail and winds to 60 mph.
Flooding will also be a possibility tonight, especially for areas
southeast of the Kansas Turnpike.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Very strong southwest winds will affect the region Thursday
afternoon and will flip around to the northwest Thursday evening.
Gusts to 50 mph will be possible both Thursday afternoon and
Thursday evening. Be sure to secure any loose outdoor items such as
trash containers and furniture.

Strong winds and low relative humidity will provide dangerous
burning conditions on Thursday afternoon and early evening. Very
high to extreme grassland fire danger is expected. Outdoor burning
is highly discouraged.
