.SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday night)
Issued at 332 AM CDT Sat Apr 11 2020

Currently across the CONUS, a cutoff low remains located over
Southern California. Further north and east, a surface stationary
front is draped across Montana and North Dakota from Canada. An
elongated front also extends southward from a surface low in
Wyoming, through eastern Colorado, and southward into Mexico
before turning eastward across the Gulf and the Florida Keys. The
ridge that has been translating from the central U.S. into the
southeast U.S. is now located across central Tennessee, resulting
in clear skies for much of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Closer to home, an increasing low-level jet and associated warm
moist advection will support some elevate showers with embedded
rumbles of thunder across southeast Kansas this morning. These
showers have remained south of the Oklahoma border for much of the
night but as of 0800z have finally started to spread further
north in southeast Kansas. Once these come to an end by late
morning, there will be a lull in precipitation chances. With
clearing skies, downslope flow, and drier air overhead (especially
in central Kansas), felt confident that high temperatures today
would probably over-perform the previous forecast so nudged them
up a couple of degrees. In fact, still not sure if they have been
increased quite enough in central Kansas where at least the short
term guidance (RAP and HRRR) hint that mid 80s are achievable, but
have at least trended them in that direction.

Attention then turns to chances for strong to severe storm
development later this afternoon and evening. As the previous
discussion mentioned, dewpoints in the 50s to near 60 are expected
to advect into the region from the south. Additionally, MLCAPE is
expected to increase to up to 1500-2000 J/kg along a corridor of
south central and central Kansas, in conjunction with steep mid-
level lapse rates. Though all of this would support severe storms
given convective initiation, the limiting factor could be
overcoming the cap. Latest data does suggest that the cap will
probably be overcome to support at least some isolated or
scattered afternoon/evening storms, but widespread coverage of
severe weather appears unlikely. The main threats will be gusty
and damaging winds with some hail possible as well. Coverage of
rain and leftover storms does look to increase somewhat during the
overnight hours especially along eastern portions of the forecast
area.

Heading into Sunday, multiple hazards will be at play for different
locations within the county warning area.

The aforementioned cutoff low that is currently over Southern
California will become a more open wave as it finally begins to
progress towards the south central CONUS late Saturday into Sunday.
At the same time, a strong cold front will push southward from
Nebraska across the area during the day on Sunday. Looking back at
past model runs and comparing with the current ones, although timing
has certainly wobbled a bit over the past few days, there has
definitely been a slower frontal passage trend with more recent
runs. To account for this trend, temperatures overnight Saturday
night/Sunday morning were tweaked quite a bit, which significantly
warmed minTs in central Kansas Sunday morning. However, temperatures
will quickly come crashing down to WELL below normal values (in the
30s) as the front moves through during the day. Additionally, strong
low-level winds, impressive cold air advection, and a tight pressure
gradient will create very strong wind speeds behind the front.
Maintained the inherited High Wind Watch for now to give subsequent
shifts one last look at things before deciding to upgrade or expand.
Based on the slower timing of things, went ahead and extended higher
wind speeds for later in the evening on Sunday as well.

Regarding precipitation on Sunday, with a slower frontal passage
allowing temperatures to heat up into the low 70s and dewpoints in
the upper 50s in southeast Kansas, instability will gradually build
up during the day. There is an increasing chance for thunderstorm
development in south central but especially southeast Kansas during
the late afternoon-with the potential to be strong to severe. This
change is also reflected in the latest Day 2 SPC outlook with the
addition of a Slight Risk for southeast Kansas. Further north,
forecast soundings continue to suggest that wraparound moisture on
the backside of the front could lead to some snow or a wintry mix
(possibly light freezing drizzle) in central Kansas. Any snow
accumulations would be very light (less than an inch) but some minor
impacts cannot be ruled out (especially given the strong winds).
Precipitation chances will come to an end Sunday evening as the
system moves off to the east. The overall pattern will become much
less active beginning on Monday, but the stage will be set for well
below normal temperatures--including multiple nights of hard
freezes--next week.

As mentioned above, the main highlight heading into the work week
next week will be much colder temperatures. Early morning lows
dropping into the 20s and 30s will be common Monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesday mornings. For reference, typical low temperatures for mid-
April would be in the low-to-mid 40s. Therefore, the forecast
currently calls for temps to drop up to 20 degrees below normal
(though will likely not quite reach record values). Afternoon
highs average in the mid-to-upper 60s, but with forecast highs in
the low to mid 40s on Monday, it is not out of the question to
break a couple "Coolest High" records. The good news is that highs
will slowly climb each day, and while remaining below normal,
should reach back into the upper 50s or near 60 by Friday.

Other than some low-confidence light precipitation along the
Kansas/Oklahoma border Monday night, the next meaningful
precipitation will not come until Thursday-Friday of next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon)

VFR conditions forecast through this evening, however MVFR to
possibly IFR ceilings will overspread the area tonight as south
flow increases low level moisture. Front will blast its way
through most locations tomorrow morning. Anticipate front will be
near KICT at 1800 UTC Sunday. There are chances for isolated
elevated showers or thunderstorm this evening through late tonight
across south central/southeast KS but chances are too slim to
mention. Also cannot rule out some showers behind the front Sunday
morning in central KS, but again chances are too low to to

.FIRE WEATHER...

For Sunday, with very strong/gusty winds expected behind a cold
front, very high grassland fire danger will be possible west of
I-135. Although relative humidities will be quite high and there
are chances of light precipitation in the forecast, the strong
winds will mean that any fires that do develop may be very
difficult to control. A High Wind Watch remains in effect for this
area Sunday during the day and through the evening hours.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of Central Kansas,
South Central Kansas and Southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Isolated thunderstorms are possible again this afternoon and
evening, mainly across central and south central Kansas. Any storm
that develops will be capable of wind gusts up to 65 mph and half-
dollar size hail.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Thunderstorms will be possible again on Sunday, primarily across
southeast Kansas. Once again, a few of those storms could be strong
to severe with damaging winds and hail as the main threats.

A cold front will move across the area Sunday, bringing strong
north winds gusting as high as 45 to 60 mph. Check the High Wind
Watch for additional details. The strong winds may be accompanied by
a wintry mix and reduced visibility across northern Kansas. At this
time, only minor accumulations of ice or snow are expected. Very
high grassland fire danger is possible west of I-135 as a result of
the high winds.

Widespread frost and or freeze appears likely early next week for
most, if not all, of the area. There is also some potential for
another round or two of wintry precipitation across parts of the
area next week.
