.SYNOPSIS...
A vigorous low pressure system will move from the eastern Great
Lakes this afternoon, into Canada on Thursday, bringing breezy
conditions to our area. Other than some mountain snow Wednesday
night and early Thursday and again Friday through Saturday morning,
expect dry and cool weather through the weekend. A warm and wet
pattern is expected to return next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 645 PM EST: A band of mainly light rain showers is pushing
east across the foothills early this evening, with shower coverage
expected to be highest across the northwest Piedmont of NC through
mid-evening before the associated cold front sweeps east of the
area. Temperatures have already begun to plummet across the NC
mountains, with values in the 20s along the higher peaks. Anticipate
a fairly rapid mixover to all snow showers in the northwest flow
upslope zone through the night. Accumulations will be highly
elevation dependent, with less than an inch in most lower mountain
valleys near the TN border, ranging to perhaps 6 to 8 inches along
the higher ridge tops of the Smokies - where the change over happens
first. The high elevation Winter Weather Advisory looks well placed,
with most warning criteria snowfall generally above 5000 feet.

There are indications this evening that the winds could become the
bigger issue, especially along the northern Blue Ridge mountains of
western North Carolina. Nearly all numerical model profiles generate
50 to 55 kt of flow at the top of the well mixed layer during the
peak of the cold advection overnight. Will strongly consider an
upgrade to a High Wind Warning for northern mountains locations. The
Advisory for the rest of the mountains appears well placed, but have
bolstered gusts a bit across the region through Thursday. Min temps
will be about 10 degrees below average in the mountains, and about 5
degrees elsewhere, with the higher elevations seeing negative wind
chill values overnight. Max temps will run about 10 degrees below
average everywhere tomorrow.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 210 pm Wednesday: A long wave trough will be in place across
the East through the short term, resulting in below-climo temps
through the period. The trough will sharpen/deepen briefly in the
Fri night/Sat time frame, as a series of upper speed maxima dive
from the Great Lakes and Great Plains into the base of the trough.
These clipper-like features, as well as a brief return of moist NW
upslope flow in their wake, will bring the next round of snow
showers to the NC mtns from Friday afternoon through early Saturday.
Actually, based upon the relative late-day timing, the lower valleys
are likely to see mostly rain until cold advection develops Fri
night into early Saturday. As such, minor accumulations will likely
be primarily confined to elevations above 3000 ft or so. By Saturday
afternoon, mountain snow showers should be giving way to
flurries/mostly cloudy conditions along the TN border, with sunny
skies elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 220 pm Wednesday: A return to warm and wet conditions appears
in the offing for the medium range, as eastern heights will be
rising from the get-go, in response to large-scale height falls
across the western half of the country. Great Plains cyclogenesis
early in the week will establish a broad and increasingly moist warm
sector across the Southeast. Temps will therefore begin a quick
moderation on Sunday, with maxes expected to be very close to climo,
or about 10 degrees warmer than Saturday's forecast. A steady
warming trend is expected to continue through the end of the
forecast period, with temps likely reaching/exceeding 10 degrees
above normal (mid-60s mtn valleys/upper 60 to lower 70s Piedmont) by
the middle of next week. A moistening atmosphere and gradually
intensifying S/SW low level flow will yield increasing chances for
isentropic lift/upslope-induced showers beginning late Monday
through Tuesday. Pops reach a nadir (50-70%) Tue night/Wed, when a
potentially strong cold front is most likely to impact the forecast
area.

.AVIATION /00Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
At KCLT and Elsewhere: Mainly KHKY will see a chance of rain showers
for the next hour or two, with coverage generally rather sparse in
the vicinity of other aiports from the Upstate SC to KCLT. Cannot
rule out a rogue rain or snow shower overnight at KAVL, but with the
better coverage west of the airfield near the TN border. Any MVFR
cigs at KHKY will be short-lived, with VFR throughout the area with
the cold fropa. Winds will quickly become the bigger story, with SW
winds turning sharply WNW with fropa this evening, and gusty. Gusts
into the 20s are likely at the foothill/piedmont sites through the
TAF period, and into the 30s at KAVL in cold advection, channeled
flow in the French Broad Valley. Gusts may be a bit resurgent with
mixing mid to late Thursday morning.

Outlook: VFR conditions will generally persist late this week
through the weekend, but with occasional flight restrictions and/or
scattered snow showers possible over the mountains from time to time
Friday through Saturday. Deeper moisture returns on Monday.
