Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Green Bay WI 631 AM CDT Thu Mar 26 2020 Updated aviation portion for 12Z TAF issuance .SHORT TERM...Today...Tonight...and Friday Issued at 334 AM CDT Thu Mar 26 2020 Most of the precipitation had shifted east of the forecast area early this morning, with only spotty light rain or sprinkles remaining over the north and east. A cold front had pushed south of the region, but temperatures were only slowly falling in its wake, due to overcast skies. Temperatures ranged from the lower 30s north to the upper 30s and lower 40s south. High pressure will remain ridged over Lake Superior today through Friday, with generally dry conditions expected. The exception may be over the far southern part of the forecast area, where a few light showers or sprinkles will be possible this afternoon and evening. Highs today should reach the lower to middle 40s. Lows tonight will be in the 20s and lower 30s. Highs on Friday should be a bit milder, with readings in the upper 40s and lower 50s, except cooler near lake Michigan. .LONG TERM...Friday Night Through Wednesday Issued at 334 AM CDT Thu Mar 26 2020 Focus of the long term will be the strong system this weekend, which looks to bring gusty winds, a little snow, locally heavy rain and flooding concerns, and a few storms. Temps through the period look to be above normal. Friday night into Sunday...potent system still on track to eject into the central Plains on Saturday, then head into the western Great Lakes Sunday morning. Models have trended slightly toward the ECMWF (farther northwest track), but there still remains important differences regarding timing and track. Will stick with a model blend (leaning toward the ECMWF and GFS), which spreads areas of rain into the area from south to north Friday night into Saturday morning as warm air advection and bands of frontogenetic forcing enhance lift as the warm front approaches from the south. Some dry air could delay the onset over the far north. Strongest moisture transport and lift arrives Saturday afternoon/evening as the warm sector makes it into southern WI, with PWATS around one inch across east central WI. Surface instability still looks to stay south of the area, but elevated instability will bring the threat for a few non-severe storms into central and eastern WI. As the system departs on Sunday, look for rain and snow showers (mainly on the light side) to end by evening. East winds will pick up on Saturday as the system approaches, then will die off as the low tracks over the area, then gusty west to northwest winds are expected behind the system on Sunday, with some gales possible. The snow threat is looking less and less like it will be impactful for the area, but any southern shift to the system could bring an accumulating snow to northern WI in the deformation zone. Some minor flooding is certainly possible with this system as some spots could see over 0.75" of precip, and soil moistures are elevated. Across central and eastern WI, the snowpack is gone and the frost is out of the ground, which will help keep widespread flood threat in check. A track farther west will also limit the northeast winds coming down the Bay, so the threat for lakeshore flooding on the southern Bay and East River looks to be lower than thought last night. However, gusty east winds may shift the flooding concern to the western shore of the bay. Farther north, snowpack will slowly dwindle through the week, but some will likely remain for the weekend. The rain falling into the snowpack could lead to minor flooding, especially along the Menominee River, in the following days as all the rain and snowmelt makes its way into the rivers/streams. Rest of the long term...surface high pressure and mid-upper level ridging builds into the Great Lakes early in the week bringing quiet weather.
