.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Wednesday night)

Expect quiet weather tonight before significant winter weather
impacts spread into the region starting Wednesday morning. An area
of cirrus will spread in this evening, with mid-lower level warm air
advection keeping low temperatures a bit warmer overnight, mainly in
the 20s. As the pressure gradient increases ahead of the approaching
front, should see breezy south/southwest winds tonight. This may
result in patchy blowing snow for the Buffalo Ridge area.

Of greater concern is impacts associated with the rapidly
approaching Arctic cold front. Overnight, this front will progress
from the international border southward toward the Central Plains.
On Wednesday, this will bring a broad swath of light snow
accumulations to the region. There is good model agreement regarding
QPF remaining light with this rapidly progressing front, at near or
less than a tenth of an inch of liquid. Much of the area can expect
less than an inch of new snow accumulations, starting Wed morning in
the north and progressing southward with the front. The highest
accumulations are expected for portions of southwest MN and east
central SD where steeper mid level lapse rates combined with
frontogenetical forcing could bring upwards of an inch or two of new
snow.

While snowfall amounts alone will not be particularly impactful, the
strong winds and push of cold air behind the front will bring
greater impacts. The initial surge of winds with the front combined
with falling snow will bring up to several hours of very
difficult travel conditions with the highest wind gusts and lowest
visibilities on Wednesday morning (north) and afternoon (south).
Deterministic model data also shows trailing strong cold air
advection and a low level jet capable of bringing gusty winds and
patchy blowing snow lasting into the early evening. Much of this
is covered with a Winter Weather Advisory, where the worst blowing
snow impacts will be just for a few hours coinciding with and
immediately following the frontal passage. The highlighted
Blizzard Warning area is where the worst blowing snow conditions
and longest period of possible whiteout conditions are expected to
occur, likely lingering for several hours following the frontal
passage. This warned area is where current amount of blowable snow
is the greatest and the heaviest snowfall amounts (up to an inch
or two) and strongest wind gusts are expected. Winds and blowing
snow impacts will gradually dissipate Wednesday evening as the
pressure gradient relaxes.

Another widespread impact behind the front will be bitterly cold
Arctic air and dangerous wind chills. Wind chill values in the 20s
and 30s below zero will infiltrate the region starting late
Wednesday afternoon, spreading regionwide Wednesday night. Even with
winds weakening, a light northwest wind will still bring wind chills
in the 30s below well into Thursday morning.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Bitterly cold weather continues through much of Thursday and into
Friday. On Thursday, expect daytime temperatures to only rise into
the single digits above and below zero at most locations as a deep
upper trough slowly departs the region to the east. Even with
lighter winds on Thursday, wind chills in the 20s below may linger
at some sites into early Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday night, nocturnal radiational cooling under surface
high pressure will support overnight low temperatures below zero
and wind chills in the teens and 20s below once again. On Friday,
warm air advection will support temperatures rising through the
day. However, subzero wind chills will linger through the morning
and a south breeze with gusts into the 30s will still make for a
brisk day.

The end of the work week looks quiet precipitation-wise as upper
ridging passes through. Temperatures are expected to rise back to
near normal values for the upcoming weekend, but a more active zonal
flow regime develops Saturday through early next week and brings
slight chances for light precipitation. Model agreement is poor
regarding the track of these systems, so confidence in any details
remains low at this time.

A quiet and VFR evening will be marred by development of low-level
wind shear for all site, ending by around 06z at KHON...09z at
KFSD and shortly after 12z at KSUX. The largest concern over the
period will be conditions associated with the advance of a strong
arctic front on Wednesday. Ceilings will quickly lower to MVFR or
upper IFR, and visibilities likely to drop to less than 1 mile in
light snow. As winds increase to gusts of 25 to 35 knots, and
some falling snow lingers, likely will find areas of less than
1/2sm visibility, and many areas of deeper snow cover from KHON
toward KMML and KMWM could see frequent 1/4sm visibility. Once
falling snow ends after a few hours, visibility in blowing snow
likely to remain in the MVFR to briefly IFR range through much of
the afternoon. For the KSUX area, lesser threat for snow and
blowing snow, and likely limited to brief treks into MVFR ceiling
and visibility once a rain/snow mix changes over to all snow.
