.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday night)

How much snow and blowing snow we get will be the main impacts for
the period.
The main upper trough will begin to move out into the Plains
tonight. The operational GFS continues to show a split in the
energy and higher QPF than the other global models, but overall
there is still better agreement on the system as it moves out into
the Plains. The surface low wraps up tonight as it moves into MN,
with strong pressure gradient and cold air advection behind it.
The strong wind potential is still very strong, with cold air
advection and pressure rises across eastern ND. Several of the
bufkit model soundings show the potential for gusts over 50 kts,
and this seems reasonable at this point.
Temps will be on their way down tonight into tomorrow, with most
locations seeing readings falling from the 20s and even low 30s
just after midnight down to the single digits by sunrise and below
zero by Wednesday afternoon. With cold temps and wind, there is a
good setup for blowing snow and the blowing snow model has very
high probabilities when snow is actively falling.
Of greater uncertainty continues to be the amount of snow we will
see from the system. There seems to be a bit more consistency with
the 700mb low moving from Canada into MN, although still a lot of
spread as far as QPF on our side of the international border.
The CAMs have been trending towards wrapping up the low just east
of our area, with the main deformation zone from far southeastern ND
into northwestern MN. There are still some signs of a bit of mixed
precipitation at the start of the event, but think the bulk of the
precipitation will fall as snow. Three to six inches of accumulation
looks most likely at this point, although there is the potential for
some mesoscale banding with some decent mid level frontogenesis over
our area. There is fairly high probability (over 60 percent) of
getting at least 2 inches across all of CWA except the Devils Lake
Basin, where amounts look lighter. With that amount of snow, and
very strong winds, think we will see blizzard conditions over much
of the Red River Valley into portions of the Sheyenne River Valley.
With lighter snow amounts, the Devils Lake Basin will be more hit
and miss as far as blowing snow. Will include them in a winter
weather advisory with an option to upgrade if they get more snow
than expected. Higher snow amounts in the 3 to 6 inch range are more
certain in our MN counties, although winds will be less of an issue
thanks to trees. Will go winter storm warning for blowing snow,
snow, and low wind chills with the option to upgrade if needed.

Summary...
A cold front from the system bringing snow and wind to the area
Tuesday night into Wednesday ushers in a strong NW flow. Cold
temperatures and hazardous wind chills are expected Thursday
morning, with slight potential again on Friday. A ridge builds in,
after the cold front sweeps into the Great Lakes providing slight
warm air advection to the region into the weekend. A zonal flow sets
up increasing chances for short waves by the beginning of next week.
Thursday through Friday...
Hazardous wind chills will be the main impact Thursday morning, with
the potential for hazardous wind chills Friday morning as a cold
front brings cold air advection and breezy conditions. Breezy
conditions and cold temperatures bring wind chills to the negative
20 to 30 range for a majority of the forecast area Thursday morning.
Skies clear out Thursday and Friday, with a ridge building in behind
the cold front Friday aiding in warm air advection by the afternoon
driving temperatures into the lower to mid 20s.
The weekend and beyond...
The continuation of a ridge building across the Northern Plains is
the main focal point for the weather. Dry conditions and seasonal
temperatures persist through the weekend. By the time we reach the
end of the weekend and into early next week the flow aloft becomes
more zonal allowing for clipper systems to move across the region.
Ensembles have picked up on a short wave moving in through Manitoba
early next week, but at this time looks to be weak with slight
chances for snow. Temperatures will fall once again from the passage
of the next system as highs reach the upper teens to lower 20s
Monday and Tuesday.

Early TAF period through this evening: VFR conditions should
prevail across eastern ND and northwest MN, with main aviation
concern early being showers moving through the region that are
producing brief light snow and ice pellets. Impacts from this
light wintry mix are mainly in northwest MN based on radar returns,
but can't be ruled out at KGFK/KFAR early on.
TAF period late tonight-midday Wednesday: system brings increasing
snow chances through Wednesday morning as well as strong north
winds and the combination could result in VLIFR (blizzard)
conditions for at least a period of the morning for many
terminals. Currently best chance for prolonged LIFR/VLIFR
conditions is in northeast ND and far northwest MN, but depending
on where and how much snow falls this could impact other
terminals as well. Confidence is high in strong winds however,
with gusts behind the front 40-52kt.
