Other than a round of very light rain which moved through after sunrise, rain confined to far northwest. Showers will slowly spread back south this afternoon and evening. One round of light rain expected to move thru ATL metro and much of north GA around sunset then scattered very light rain and/or drizzle persisting thru the night. Heavy rain and potential severe event still on tap to occur Wed night and Thurs. Have a draft flood watch that extends further west to include westcentral and ATL metro. Will have more on that later. SNELSON .PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 653 AM EST Tue Feb 4 2020/ SHORT TERM /Today through Wednesday/... Developing frontal system now over the Southern Plains and Central MS river valley is beginning to spread precip into AL/GA/TN. Continued southwest flow at the surface and in the upper levels will allow good moisture to stream across the area ahead of the approaching cold front over the next few days. The main front will move slowly eastward and is not expected to move into GA until Wed/Thu, but deep moisture ahead of it will bring precip to our area beginning today. A sharpening upper level trough swings east out of the northern rockies and into the central and southern plains through the short term. Waves moving NE out of the Gulf ride along the southwesterly flow and continue to bring increased precip to the southeastern US through the end of the week. Most locations will see 1 to 3 inches of rain over the next 2 days with another 2 to 3 inches expected by the end of the week. Please see the Hydrology section below for more details. Will continue with the current flood watch as is as it still looks like N GA will receive the brunt of the precip amounts through Friday. Temperatures today and Wednesday will continue well above normal with highs in the 60s to near 70 and lows in the 50s. 01 LONG TERM /Wednesday Night through Monday/... Showers and a few thunderstorms will be ongoing at the start of the period. A strong upper level trough will track across the southeast during the first half of the period...with the associated cold front moving across GA on Thursday. Showers and a few strong to severe thunderstorms are still expected for Wednesday and Thursday. A Flood Watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Friday morning. As the upper flow becomes more west to northwest on Saturday...a fast moving short wave crosses the Appalachians. This brings another chance for showers to the area. Depending on how fast the colder air moves in behind the front...there could be a chance for a light wintry mix across the far north on Friday morning and another chance on Friday night. Also...another opportunity for rain or snow Saturday night for the far north in the wake of the fast moving short wave. At this time...little to no accumulations expected. Sunday looks dry and then moisture increases again on Monday ahead of the next short wave. 41 HYDROLOGY... The most significant rainfall is anticipated on Wednesday and Thursday. During this period, rainfall amounts will range from 2.5 to 5 inches across the entire forecast area. The highest rainfall amounts are expected over the northeast Georgia mountains, with forecast totals ranging 3.5 to 5 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Soils are already soggy from recent rainy conditions. These amounts will increase the chances of at least minor flooding of rivers...creeks...and streams. Localized flash flooding is possible if a prolonged period of heavy rain should occur. A Hydrologic Outlook /ATLESFFFC/ has been issued for this event.
