.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will allow for dry weather to last into
Monday, with even some filtered sun through high clouds. A cold
front will bring widespread rain and high elevation snow Monday
night into Tuesday. Episodes of light rainfall will be possible
through the end of the week, mainly north of Cape Mendocino.

.DISCUSSION...Most of northwest California has seen a rather
cloudy day today, but there have been some times of at least
filtered sunshine today through plentiful high cloudiness. These
high clouds, along with a cooler start this morning, have kept us
from reaching forecast highs along most of the Redwood Coast.
Additionally, much calmer winds compared to yesterday have limited
mixing of warming air aloft under a building high pressure ridge.
That said, the rest of our area is running 4 to 8 degrees milder
than this time yesterday, with even more noticeable warming across
the higher mountainous terrain. Some of the interior valley
locations that started off foggy this morning are still running a
bit cool as well, though.
Expect a pretty similar night to last night, though with some
thicker and more widespread high clouds, most locations may tend
milder. Winds will be fairly calm once again, though southeast
breezes may start picking up over the ridgetops by morning.
Southerly breezes will pick up and expand to many of the valleys
and the coastal plain by Monday afternoon, as the next cold front
approaches. Although the breeze will make some areas feel cooler
than today, overall temperatures should run a few degrees milder
in the valleys and at the coast. Expect similar sky cover as we
have seen on Sunday as well, with partial or dim sunshine while
high clouds thicken. Rain will hold off until after sunset, even
where it arrives first around Crescent City.
While much of northwest California will see a half-inch to an inch
of rain with this front and additional showers lasting into
Tuesday, the main threats to keep be aware of will be gusty winds
and mountain snow. Have issued a Winter Storm Watch for elevations
above 4500 feet in northern Trinity County Monday night through
Tuesday afternoon. Model guidance is pointing toward snow levels
rising above 5000 feet in warmer air being drawn northward ahead
of the front, however thinking they will run a bit lower in
northern Trinity, then begin to fall closer to 4000 feet after the
front passes by early Tuesday morning. This should at least allow
for 6 to 12 inches above 4500 feet or so, with perhaps around a
foot at Scott Mountain Summit. The HWY 299 passes should stay wet.
Would not rule out a little snow over the highest parts of Highway
36 on Tuesday, but at this point it looks like amounts will be
under 2 inches. Meanwhile, southerly winds will increase along
the coast and over the ridgetops late Monday and peak Monday
night, before diminishing on Tuesday. It is very possible that
winds could gust to near or over 45 mph at some of the coastal
headlands, particularly around CEC, as well as the coastal
ridgetops like Kneeland Airport and Schoolhouse Peak, as well as
into the King Range. A Wind Advisory may be needed, and later
shifts will continue to monitor.
Otherwise, after showers gradually diminish on Tuesday, mid and
upper-level ridging will tend to build over California. This will
tend to result in a fairly mild weather pattern, with relatively
high snow levels, and the tendency to keep storm systems to our
north. Still, most guidance points toward storm systems clipping
at least northern portions of our area with episodes of light rain
through the end of the week. Meanwhile, much of Mendocino County
could end of up with a largely dry week after the Monday
night/Tuesday system. More widespread precipitation is possible
next weekend, but at this point with the weather pattern
continuing to look rather progressive, major wind or precipitation
impacts are not anticipated. /AAD

.AVIATION...Winds have remained mostly light today. As
advertised, shallow mist and haze developed after 19Z brining
periods of LIFR conditions at CEC and ACV. The haze is expected to
clear out overnight, but confidence is low on the timing as the
wind remains light. As a front approaches on Monday, VFR
conditions are expected to persist through the period while clouds
continue to lower. Veering Winds will be ticking up from SE, with
14kts and becoming gusty by 0Z at CEC with the approaching front.

.MARINE...The Westerly swell remains elevated this afternoon and
continues to run slightly higher than NWPS. Currently the seas are
running 10 to 11 feet 14 seconds at the buoys. This expected to
drop below 10 feet this evening and the small craft advisories
will be allowed to expire.
Seas should subside more substantially Monday morning. Southerly
winds and wind waves will increase more substantially Monday
evening and overnight as stronger southerlies increase to gale in
the northern waters. The highest probability for gales will be in
the northern outer waters. Confidence is lower across the inner
waters, but have still upgraded both of them to a gale warning.
Small craft advisories for the southern waters for Monday
afternoon will likely be needed this evening once the current
advisories expire.
How quickly winds die down is also not certain. Strong winds may
linger into Tuesday morning south of the Cape as the NAM-nest
indicates. Most all the models have the winds dropping off and
switching to the SW after frontal passage Tuesday morning. A large
westerly swell from 18-20 ft is expected to build later in the
day on Tuesday. The swell will pose a threat for beachgoers and
mariners traversing harbor entrances. The most likely period for
high surf appears to be during the afternoon and evening hours. An
advisory for surf or a beach hazard statement will need to be
considered over the next 24-48 hours. Winds and seas should quite
down around mid week, however a longer period westerly will build
toward the end of the week, bringing another threat for large
breaking waves to the beaches.
