.SYNOPSIS...Another dry, sunny and pleasant day is setting up,
with increasing southerly winds and some clouds for tomorrow.
Thereafter, a storm system is forecast to move across the region
during Christmas Day. Widespread moderate rainfall will be likely
with that storm, as well as heavy mountain snow across Trinity
County. Another round of rain may occur Sunday and Monday.
.DISCUSSION...A prominent ridge of high pressure is continuing to
progress eastward into the region today. Morning temperatures are
chilly once again under the subsequent clear skies and light
surface winds. Some of the higher elevation are recording some
gusty easterly winds. Skies will be clear and sunny today with a
warm and drying easterly surface wind flow. The ridge axis will
pass later this afternoon, marking the beginning of the
transition to the next impactful weather system. Overnight,
southerly flow will develop with increasing cloud cover as a pair
of upper disturbances approach. These southeasterly winds will
continue to increase to over 50 mph in gusts on Friday in some
coastal areas and exposed ridges ahead of a front, and this will
need to be monitored for a wind advisory in some locations.
The aforementioned drying flow pattern continues to look favorable
for snowfall for northern Trinity county where model soundings
depict wet bulb temperatures sufficient for effective evaporative
cooling. Moreover, a weakly unstable airmass with K-Index values
nearing 30 will progress inland Friday evening along with some
convective showers and heavier precipitation rates. A few coastal
thunderstorms with small hail will be possible. The instability
and heavier rainfall rates will also aid in driving down more
colder air, increasing the probability for a longer duration
snowfall for the locations in Trinity county where current winter
storm watch is out. Snowfall may reach all the way to the lower
valley floors for areas under the watch. The heaviest snowfall is
expected across the Trinity Alps down to highway pass levels, with
mountain travel corridors possibly experiencing up to 12 inches
of storm total snowfall through Saturday morning. Higher
resolution guidance is expected to soon provide further details
on more localized snow totals.
Another storm system is then forecast to approach on Sunday and
Monday. However, model guidance indicates that system may track
south of the EKA CWA, which would favor a drier weather scenario.

.AVIATION...Other than patches of low clouds and fog in the interior
and coastal river valleys this morning, VFR conditions with light
winds are forecast for the terminals (KCEC, KACV and KUKI) through
12Z Thu.

.MARINE...A thermal trough along the coast will promote a light
offshore wind regime today through tonight. Short period waves will
steadily decline, but a longer period W-NW swell will build tonight.
South-southeast winds will increase on Thu, however resultant seas
will probably not build to small craft advisory levels until Thu
night. Southerlies will strengthen Thu night with a corresponding
increase in short period steep southerly waves. A full gale is
expected for the outer waters on Friday, with south winds from 30-
40kt and seas from 15 t 18 feet. A gale watch remains in effect for
the outer waters. There is not enough reliable information at this
point to expand the gale watch to the inner waters. Seas will likely
remain elevated and hazardous over the weekend as a large mid-period
westerly swell builds on Saturday.
