Precipitation This Afternoon Followed by Gusty Winds Creating 
Blizzard to Near-Blizzard Conditions Over Portions of Iowa on 
Saturday...

.Snow continues to move northeastward through central Iowa late this 
morning. While the snow may start light, the rate will increase with 
periods of moderate to heavy snow, which will cause the visibility 
to drop under a half a mile at times. Winds from the southeast 
gusting between 30 and 40 mph will also aid in lowered visibility. 
Snow reports so far range from between 1 and 3 inches over
southeast Iowa with additional snow accumulations expected across
the state.

Through this afternoon, snow rates will decrease with a transition 
to freezing drizzle with minor ice accumulations expected. Then, 
strong winds from the northwest gusting over 45 mph will develop 
early Saturday along with falling temperatures, which should 
result in a flash freeze on roadways. The gusty winds will also 
create widespread blowing snow with visibility under one-quarter 
of a mile at times over parts of northern Iowa.

.Moderate to heavy snow is moving through central Iowa this
afternoon, but is beginning to transition to freezing rain and
freezing drizzle. This transition to freezing drizzle will
continue to move eastward through the afternoon into this evening.
Winds from the southeast are gusting between 25 and 35 mph this
afternoon. Snow reports through early afternoon are generally 
between 3 and 6 inches over western Iowa as well.

As freezing drizzle continues into tonight, a minor ice 
accumulations is expected. Strong winds from the northwest will 
develop early Saturday with wind gusts over 45 mph anticipated 
along with falling temperatures, which may result in a flash

Tonight...relatively quiet before the storm system hits Friday. We
will see increasing clouds and light winds through the night. As the
surface high departs, winds will switch around to the
south/southeast and temps will slowly rise overnight.

Friday and Friday night...Deep trough shifts across the Rockies with
a surface low developing over the Central Plains.  Strong warm and
moisture advection occurs over the state but soundings show a very
stark gradient to the moisture with most moisture staying west of
the Missouri River through 12Z.  From 12Z to 15Z deep moisture
pushes into central Iowa and with fairly quick saturation and decent
lift, we should quickly start to snow by mid morning and  we will
likely accumulate snow fairly quickly through noon or early
afternoon.  As the low shifts into us Friday mid to late afternoon
through the evening we lose our ice introduction and precip
transitions to drizzle or freezing drizzle.  As the low shifts east
Friday night and colder air comes in, precip will transition back to
snow with strong winds coming in with the colder air.  Soundings
show 50+ kts atop the mixed layer and this will likely all mix down
so we are looking at a blizzard or near blizzard event possible
north into central Iowa.  With the variety of winter weather, timing
issues, ice accruals of a tenth of an inch or so and their affects
on power lines and trees with the wind, we kept headlines simple
with an advisory far south and a warning central and north. We may
need to transition to a blizzard warning later but this will be
handled in future updates as the storm progresses.

Once the system pulls east later Saturday, brisk winds remain
followed by some very cold air.  Wind chill headlines will likely be
needed down the road but for now the hazard is the impending snow
and ice for Friday.

The next system to impact Iowa looks to come in the Wednesday
timeframe as another shortwave drops out of the Rockies into the
Plains.  Models differ on the evolution and timing of precip so for
now the model blended solutions with chance PoPs are decent.

.AVIATION.../For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday night/
Issued at 1129 PM CST Thu Jan 16 2020

VFR conditions will continue at the beginning of this TAF period,
but will quickly come to an end around and after 15z across the
TAF sites. Reductions to MVFR/IFR will first come via visibilities
as snowfall commences and at least remain through the TAF period
as ceilings also drop to around or less than 1 kft. LIFR
conditions may be experienced as visibilities drop below 1 SM
with heaviest snowfall likely between 16z to 00z. Ceilings also
expected to continue to fall, approaching 500 ft or less.
FZRA/FZDZ concerns also increase after 00z, compounding an
already impactful TAF period. Have eliminated LLWS mentions with
suggestions that meeting criteria will be fairly transient during
the period.
