.SHORT TERM...(Today through Sunday Morning)

Snow showers continue across the Sierra Madre and Snowy Mountains,
but other than that, snow showers seem rather isolated at this
time. Low to mid cloud decks have aided in keeping temperatures
from plummeting overnight with a deep snowpack still on the
ground across the High Plains and adjacent mountainous terrain.
As the shortwave currently passing aloft exits the region to the
south and east, breezy conditions and partly cloudy skies will
bring a relatively quiet winter day to southeast Wyoming and the
western Nebraska Panhandle, especially after the strong winds and
blizzard conditions we saw yesterday.
This relative calm will be short-lived as the northwesterly flow
aloft tightens as a series of mini short waves pass overhead,
large-scale subsidence increases, and the increased Craig to
Casper height gradients again signal an increase in winds across
the wind-prone areas of southeast Wyoming. This next wind event
will be a longer term event, beginning early Friday morning, and
continuing through Sunday morning. Aiding in the increased surface
gradients across southeast Wyoming's mountains will be the
building ridge over the Great Basin. The ridge will be transient
in nature, and as a Pacific trough pushes inland Saturday, it will
kick the ridge east, sending a strong shortwave trough through
southeast Wyoming. The building mountain wave over the Laramie
Range will then have a chance to break Saturday afternoon,
spilling strong winds out of the mountains and into the adjacent
High Plains, effecting a broader area of southeast Wyoming, much
like we saw Wednesday, but more so, for a bora-like event.
Luckily, the winds will diminish just as quickly as they came for
the areas outside of the regular wind- prone areas, with the wind-
prone areas diminishing by Sunday morning.
Overall, the short-term will be dictated by the winds, with
mountain snow continuing through Friday morning. With this in
mind, the Winter Storm Warning for the mountains remains in
effect, and a High Wind Watch has been issued for the next wind
event described above. Also of note will be the seasonably warm
temperatures forecast for Saturday east of the Laramie Range.
Downslope compressional heating will bring the High PLains 10 to
15 degrees above normal. Temperatures will be about normal to the
west for Saturday.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Wednesday)

Strong winds will be the name of the game through the long term as a
the zonal mid level jet remains in place over southeastern Wyoming
and western Nebraska. A series of shortwave troughs is expected to
be located within the main jet and transit the area beginning Sunday
night and early Monday. This will likely bring some extra could
cover and possibly some light mountain snow in addition to strong
winds. While still several days out all signals point to another
potentially strong wind event Monday. Large scale subsidence in
combination with tight surface gradients should support wind gust in
excess of 50 kts for the gap areas and southern laramie foothills.
This will likely continue into part of Tuesday and temperatures
should be warmed adiabatically as a result. By mid week flow turns
more southwesterly ahead of a more robust shortwave trough
Wed/Thursday. Light precipitation will be possible but it looks more
likely that winds will return once again. Models are in relatively
strong agreement that behind this system the upper level pattern
will shift away from concentrated zonal flow to more broken and wavy
pattern. This will likely open up the potential for cooler
temperatures and more precipitation chances through the middle of
the month.

to high cloudiness. A weak weather disturbance aloft will brush NE
Wyoming and northwest Nebraska later today, resulting in scattered
rain and snow showers from 21z today to 06z Friday mainly for KCDR
and KAIA. Can't rule out some MVFR conditions due to low CIG and VIS
for these two terminals as well. VFR conditions expected elsewhere
with west to northwest winds gusting up to 30 knots at times.

An upslope, moist flow continues snow showers over the Sierra
Madres and Snowy Ranges where a Winter Storm Warning remains in
place. Otherwise, a relatively dry flow aloft will bring partly
cloudy skies to the High Plains and the adjacent High Terrain.
This same flow will bring frequent windy periods beginning first
thing Friday morning through Sunday, and again early next week.
The wind event beginning Friday will start confined to the wind-
prone areas of southeast Wyoming, however, a mountain wave will
break over the Laramie Range Saturday afternoon spilling strong
winds into the High Plains of southeast Wyoming through the
evening.
