Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will lift north today, then a cold front will move
through Monday. High pressure will briefly rebuild early next
week before a coastal low pressure system moves through mid
week. High pressure will return Thursday and Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A low pressure system will advance towards the area from the
west today. An associated warm front currently to our south
will slowly lift towards the area through the day. Showers and
thunderstorms have blossomed over the southern half of the
forecast area. This activity will shift north through the area
through the rest of the afternoon. An isolated severe
thunderstorm/tornado cannot be ruled out with increasing shear
and impressive low level helicity values, however the
instability will remain the limiting factor. Most favorable
conditions will exist across southeast Georgia and inland areas.
Overall threat appears low, but radar will certainly bear
watching.

Otherwise, southeast winds will increase throughout the day as
the pressure gradient tightens. Conditions are expected to
remain below Wind Advisory criteria, although could come close
along the coast late in the day. Temperatures will peak well
into the 70s across most locations, with locations across the
far south to reach the low 80s. Ongoing forecast was working out
well, so only minor tweaks were made to account for latest
observations and trends.

Tonight: Most of the shower activity within the northward
lifting surface trough will quickly dwindle this evening. In
fact, much of the evening and early morning hours are expected
to largely be precipitation free ahead of the approaching
intense line of thunderstorms to the west. The main forecast
challenge will be timing the arrival of the thunderstorm line,
and assessing the near storm environment that it will be
sampling when it does arrive. For the last several days, models
have steadily slowed the arrival of the line and that trend has
continued. The fly in the ointment though is that typically
forecast models are too slow in moving convective lines eastward
as they become organized. In this case, a slower arrival time
seems more plausible due to the fact that the trough aloft is
expected to dampen and lift quickly northeastward just to the
west of the Southern Appalachians. Lacking the presence of the
trough aloft to push it eastward, it make sense that the
thunderstorm line won't arrive until very late tonight. Hi-res
models show the line reaching the far inland counties (Jenkins,
Candler, etc.) roughly in the 6-8 am time period. The shear and
overall dynamic fields will be quite impressive across the area.
The question will, as always, be regarding the amount of
instability available. Fortunately, this time period is as least
climatologically favorable as you can get and model soundings
show a weakly unstable environment. So as the line approaches
and reaches the far inland zones, it will likely have a history
of producing severe weather and this threat will continue into
this small area of the interior of the forecast area. The bulk
of the severe weather threat will reside in the time period
after sunrise.

In the warm sector ahead of the approaching line winds will
continue to increase overnight. Frequent gusts into the 30-35
mph range are expected, and there is certainly potential for
gusts to 40 mph. A Wind Advisory could eventually be needed for
at least portions of the area overnight.

Lake Winds: Winds will increase across Lake Moultrie and on the
lake shore areas today with frequent gusts to around 25 knots.
Winds will then increase further overnight, with gusts to around
30 knots. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect starting this
afternoon and continuing through the overnight.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The models are coming into better agreement that the main
area of convection associated with the cold front will move
through the local area sometime between daybreak and noon
Monday. However, it remains possible that the activity will
become quite organized upstream and accelerate east, reaching
the area before daybreak Monday.

Shear parameters are expected to be rather strong with 50-60 kt
of 0-6 km bulk shear and 0-3 km helicities of 400-500 m2/s2. As
is often the case in our area, the big question mark is whether
enough surface-based instability will exist to support a
significant threat for severe weather. Typically an early to
mid morning time frame is climatologically unfavorable for
severe weather. In this case, however, there are indications
that there could be at least moderate instability. Surface
dewpoints will be hovering around 70F Monday morning and mid-
levels will be cooling as indicated by 700-500 mb lapse rates of
6-6.5 and LIs of -3 to -5C. Several models show at least 1,000
J/kg CAPE by mid morning. Given the expected shear parameters,
damaging winds and tornadoes appear to be the main threats,
though the cooling mid levels could also support marginally
severe hail.

Breezy conditions expected through Monday afternoon though
speeds should be gradually decreasing through the day. A Lake
Wind Advisory will be in effect for Lake Moultrie through late
afternoon. We cannot rule out needing a general Wind Advisory
for coastal SC Monday morning. The brunt of the precipitation
should be moving off the coast by sometime Monday afternoon.
There really won't be a significant wind shift following the
passage of the convective line so a warm advection regime will
continue, pushing high temps into the low 80s.

Broad high pressure will expand east from the central United
States Monday night and Tuesday. A weak baroclinic zone will
develop just off the coast on Tuesday. Continuing broad upper
troughing to our west will support the development of several
weak waves of low pressure along the coastal baroclinic zone
Tuesday through Wednesday. Fairly widespread showers and
isolated thunderstorms are expected to move through Tuesday
night and Wednesday as the main surface low moves through.
Wednesday will bring cooler temperatures as cold air advection
occurs on the western periphery of the surface low.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Several areas of high pressure will traverse the area Wednesday
night through the weekend. There could be a few showers during
the weekend as some upper shortwaves move through.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Isolated showers have reached KSAV and will continue to push
northeast quickly over the next couple of hours, towards KCHS.
Impacts will be minimal at both terminals. Cloud cover has been
increasing at KCHS, and MVFR is expected soon and then will
prevail. MVFR will prevail at KSAV as well. Winds will continue
to be southeast and gusty (25-30 kts) throughout the rest of the
day and into tomorrow.

As for tomorrow morning, a line of strong thunderstorms is expected
to move through the CWA. Time of arrival is still uncertain but as
of now, the models have it moving through from 11Z-16Z. Once the
line reaches the terminals, it should move out fairly quickly. With
this line, winds are expected to be stronger at times. MVFR will
prevail but IFR and LIFR are possible at times with thunderstorms.

Extended Aviation Outlook: Periodic flight restrictions into
midday Monday as numerous showers and tstms affect the area.
Gusty winds also expected on Monday. Flight restrictions again
possible Tuesday night and Wednesday with numerous showers
associated with a coastal low.

.MARINE...
Today through Tonight: Conditions across the local waters will
steadily deteriorate this afternoon and especially overnight. A
tightening pressure gradient and strengthening low level wind
field will produce Small Craft Advisory conditions today with
solid Gale Warning conditions overnight. Frequent gusts to 35
knots are expected, even up to 40 knots across the outer Georgia
waters. A Gale Watch for Charleston Harbor is in effect starting
this evening, although it looks increasingly likely that 35
knot gusts will occur in Charleston Harbor, and the watch may
need to be upgraded to a warning later today. Seas will ramp up
quickly this afternoon and evening, and the forecast features up
to 10 feet around 20 nm and up to 12 feet in the outer waters.

Gale conditions likely Monday morning though conditions improve
fairly quickly by Monday afternoon as the low level jet shifts
east. A squall line will move through the waters during the
morning and possibly early afternoon bringing a risk for wind
gusts in excess of 50 kt, hail and possibly a waterspout or two.
Small Craft Advisory conditions likely through much of Monday
night.

Marginal Small Craft Advisories possible Wednesday night and
Thursday over the offshore waters due to northeast fetch
building some 6 ft seas.

Rip Currents: Increasing winds and waves in the surf zone will
support a moderate risk at all beaches today. The risk remains
moderate for the GA coast Monday but increases to the high
category for the SC beaches due to larger breakers.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Higher than normal tides will continue due to astronomical
influences from the full moon and perigee. Additionally, winds
are forecast to be onshore into Monday morning, which could
further elevate the tides. As a result, minor coastal flooding
is expected around the high tide just after midnight in the early
morning hours of Monday.

High Surf: Strong southerly flow ahead of a cold front will
result in building nearshore seas this afternoon and evening. With
seas as high as 9-11 ft within 20 NM of shore, breaker heights
could exceed 5 ft at times this evening into Monday morning,
necessitating a High Surf Advisory. The risk for 5+ ft breakers
looks highest along the southern South Carolina coast, but could
also occur along the southeast Georgia coast as well.
