.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will push south of the area and usher in an unseasonably
cold airmass which will be accompanied by snow showers at
times this weekend. This may result in some record temperatures.
Below normal temperatures will remain with us through the
middle of next week before we experience any significant
warming.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

...Near record cold temperatures expected tonight...

A closed upper low near the Quebec/Ontario border will maintain
a cold northwesterly flow across the region. Meanwhile a surface
cold will continue to push southeast of the area while
strengthening low pressure passes south of the area late this
afternoon. This boundary will continue to tap into deeper
moisture associated with the surface low, along with DPVA from
the approaching trough will support snow showers across Western
New York this afternoon. Although temperatures may start off
around 40, evaporational cooling will cool the thermal profile
to support a quick changeover to snow, even across lower
elevations. Fortunately, no accumulation is expected today given
the May sun angle and limited precipitation rates.
Precipitation across Western New York will continue to push
slowly southeastward, following the progression of the surface
low and frontal boundary. The North Country stands the best
chance to remain mainly dry most of the day, however a
sharpening trough axis may bring some late afternoon or early
evening snow showers to the region.

Cold air will continue to pour into the region tonight, with
850MB temps dropping to -10C to -12C. Winds will not diminish
tonight, but the air mass is cold enough to support near record
low temperatures through advection rather than radiational
cooling. Lows will range from the lower 20s well inland away
from the lakes, to around 30 near the lakeshores. Based on this,
have issued a Freeze Warning for all of our active counties.
It's also worth noting that temperatures will be WELL below
freezing in many areas which could hinder mitigation efforts
for agricultural interests.

In addition to the cold, some snow showers will linger
overnight. Despite this air being more than cold enough to
trigger a lake response, the airmass will be fairly dry
initially. This will limit the lake effect potential, with just
some scattered snow showers.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Deep upper vortex pivots across lower Great Lakes and New
England on Saturday while sfc low quickly rides northeast
offshore of Maine to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Vortex is
more progressive than it looked like 24 hr ago, but that will
still have little impact on the cold, blustery conditions
expected. Temperatures may rise into the lower 40s for the lake
plains, but will stay in the 30s elsewhere. Lake effect snow
showers to start the day will transition to diurnally driven
instability snow and graupel (snow pellet) showers while working
into the afternoon. Maximum coverage to the showers will be
inland as lapse rates steepen during peak insolation. Any of the
heavier snow showers may briefly whiten the ground even at
lower elevations, with 1-2 inches possible across the higher
terrain. Any stronger snow showers will produce brief lower
visibility as well. High temperatures will be near record cold,
with highs around 40 at lower elevations and mid 30s across
higher terrain. Even where surface temperatures rise into the
lower 40s, precip type should be all snow given very low
wetbulb-zero heights. It will also be quite windy, with gusts of
30-40 mph common across the region.

Saturday night the deepening low will move to Labrador Canada while
upper low quickly follows suit. Instability showers will transition
back to lake effect and/or upslope driven snow showers overnight
Saturday night, most notable off eastern Lake Ontario into the Tug
Hill and western Dacks where an inch or two of snow may occur. Will
be another cold night with lows below freezing except at the
immediate lakeshores with onshore winds.

For Mothers Day, lingering snow showers will end east of Lake
Ontario during the morning. Attention then turns to shortwave
sliding east-southeast along the periphery of large scale troughing
over eastern Canada. Some models are more developed with the wave
and thus the sfc-H85 trough/warm air advection that slides across
the region later Sunday into Sunday night. Some are more muted just
grazing the region with this system. Kept low chances into western
NY in the aftn then increased pops on Sunday night, especially south
of the Thruway. Ptype would start out as mainly rain Sun aftn then
would see snowflakes mix with the rain over higher terrain later
Sunday night.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Below normal temperatures will continue through early next week as a
strong positive PNA pattern remains in place with ridge over
western North America and downstream troughing over eastern
North America, including the lower Great Lakes. Pattern begins
to relax early next week, then finally becomes more zonal mid to
late week. Net result is a warm up is in store by this time
next week with highs climbing back around normal (middle 60s)
for mid May.

After Monday's system slides east, there may be just enough cold air
for weak lake response Monday night east of the lakes. Otherwise, it
now looks mainly quiet Tuesday into Wednesday as high pressure ridge
crosses region. Still remains chilly though with sub freezing
temperatures expected on Monday Night and Tuesday night. Daytime
highs will be in the 40s Tuesday but reach well into the 50s on
Wednesday as the warm air starts to arrive. The farthest inland
locations could see another frosty night on Wednesday night, but
that should then be it for frost potential for the rest of next
week. As warm air advection further strengthens, next chance of rain
showers will arrive on Thursday.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Snow showers across WNY will lower visibility below 2SM at
times this afternoon, with otherwise VFR flight conditions.
Frontal boundary push further south this evening, with a drier
air mass supporting more widespread VFR flight conditions.
Modest northwest flow lake effect snow showers possible, which
may briefly impact KJHW/KROC.

Mid-level trough will move through mid-day Saturday with
numerous snow showers. These may briefly lower visibility to 1SM
or less. It also will be windy with gusts to 30 kts.

Outlook...

Saturday night...VFR/MVFR. Scattered numerous snow showers
Sunday and Monday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of rain/snow showers.
Tuesday and Wednesday...Mainly VFR.

Moderately fresh west-northwesterly winds will continue on
portions of Lake Ontario this afternoon with small craft
headlines as outlined below. Winds will be somewhat lower on
Lake Erie, but still enough to produce choppy conditions.

Winds will strengthen again tonight and remain elevated through
the weekend, with small craft headlines likely needed on both
lakes for much of the time.
