through on Tuesday. Temperatures trend below average for most of
next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

1250 PM Update...

Increased sky cover toward the latest RAP guidance as it has the
right idea, but RH values are too low given the current sky
cover. Otherwise haven't made any major adjustments in the
latest update.

930 AM Update...

No major changes in the latest update. Have increased sky cover
based on the latest observations toward the RAP 850 hPa RH
field. Used this as a proxy for sky cover diminishing as high
pressure builds into Upstate New York. Rest of the forecast
is on track.

Previous Discussion...

* Mostly sunny and breezy with seasonable temperatures.

Locally dense interior valley fog will lift shortly after
sunrise, giving way to a seasonably cold and mostly sunny day.
Strong cold air advection will take place over much of the day,
with 850mb temperatures falling to -5C. With mixing up to
between 850mb to 900mb, expect highs to be in the mid 40s to low
50s, with Eastern MA warmer thanks to downsloping effect. Cold
advection aloft combined with sufficient cloud-level moisture
should generate scattered stratocumulus especially north of the
Massachusetts Turnpike. There may even be a few stray lake-
effect flurries over parts of the interior high terrain but no
weather impact expected. Northwest winds could gust up to 20-25
mph at times, making it feel even chillier despite plenty of
sunshine.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Tonight...

A 1024 mb surface high will be right over southern New England.
With light winds and mostly clear skies, this is a favorable
synoptic setup for a strong radiational cooling night across
southern New England. Have used the 10th percentile of guidance
to yield widespread low temperatures in the 20s across the
interior of southern New England. Coastal areas will stay a bit
warmer with readings ranging from the upper 20s to the mid 30s.

Sunday into Sunday night...

* Brief warm up with southeast MA and RI possibly reaching near
  60 degrees.
* Possible fine line of convection with gusty and potentially
  damaging winds late Sunday night.

Most of the day will be dry with surface high pressure in
control. But as the surface high moves east over the waters,
milder air will return as a warm front briefly lifts north ahead
of an approaching storm system. The areas with the best chance
of seeing the warm sector will be southeast MA and southern RI,
with highs in the mid 50s to possibly low 60s. Dew points rise
into the 50s, which is impressive for November.

Mesoscale models show a fine line of low-topped convection
crossing the region late Sunday evening into early Monday. This
is supported by K index values in the low to mid 30s, which
indicates the potential for a line of heavy showers with
possible embedded thunder.

Dynamics wise, S New England will be in the favorable left
front quadrant of a 150 kt 250mb jet. Closer to the surface, we
have a 65- 70 kt 925mb low level jet, with both GEFS and NAEFS
showing v winds 3 to 4 standard deviations above normal. It
certainly looks to be a dynamic system with strong pressure rise
fall couplet. As the parent low deepens to sub-980 mb over the
Great Lakes and lift north, the strong dynamics spin off a
secondary low and track across interior New England. PWATs also
rise to just over an inch, which is 1 to 2 standard deviations
above normal. Bufkit soundings show the potential for strong and
locally damaging winds associated with the possible fine line
of convection. There is also the possibility of seeing gradient
wind gusts over 40 kt outside of convection, but confidence is
not high enough for a Wind Advisory at this time.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights...

* Remaining blustery through Monday, and even into Tuesday,
  over the waters

* Temperatures trend well below normal for the middle of next
  week, then should rise back near normal late next week.

The most prominent weather aspect during this portion of the
forecast will be the arrival of colder air. This will be quite a
change from what our region has recently experienced. Expecting
below normal temperatures Tuesday into Thursday, with the cold
peaking Wednesday.

High pressure is expected to be near or over our region most of
next week, which will limit our precipitation chances. There are
a couple of windows for some light rain or snow showers. The
first should be ahead of a cold front Tuesday. Any snow showers
should be confined to the higher terrain of western MA,
especially during the morning hours. This cold front is expected
to move past the coastal waters Tuesday evening.

The second opportunity for showers should be with a warm front
towards next Friday. But with most of the guidance showing a
nearly zonal mid level flow, have lower confidence this timing
will hold true through this entire week.

Astronomical tides rising through the weekend, reaching their
highest monthly levels on Sunday and Monday.

Projected levels (values below in MLLW):

Boston Harbor: 12.4 ft Monday midday; flood stage 12.5 ft.
Nantucket:      4.4 ft Monday midday;  flood stage 5.0 ft.
Woods Hole:     4.2 ft Sunday evening; flood stage 5.5 ft.
Newport RI:     5.0 ft Sunday evening; flood stage 6.0 ft.
Providence RI:  6.4 ft Sunday morning; flood stage 7.0 ft.

Significant coastal flooding is not expected this weekend into
early next week.

Strong southerly winds are forecast Sunday ahead of an incoming
cold front. Still need to monitor surge values especially for
south-facing coasts given the high astro tides. Guidance from
Stevens Institute SNAP-Ex supports some splashover, or at worst
minor coastal flooding, for these areas. Offshore/west flow
should limit any coastal flooding Monday to minor splashover
levels for the eastern coasts.
