The strong, late-Spring storm system that moved over Colorado last night has been moving eastward and out of the state today. As the storm leaves, pressure differences across the plains have been decreasing which has allowed northerly winds to begin diminishing. Winds are no longer strong enough to cause damage and will continue to decrease through this evening. Motorists on the plains will continue to see gusty crosswinds, especially on I-70 from Limon eastward. Use caution if travelling in a high-profile vehicle. $$

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 837 PM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 .UPDATE... Issued at 830 PM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 The convective cloudiness over the western CWA is beginning to dissipate at this time. The south and southwesterly winds over much of the CWA are relaxing somewhat as well. Not much else going on. Will make some sky and wind GFE grid updates. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday) Issued at 344 PM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 Strong and dry southwest flow remains over the forecast area this afternoon. There is a little cumulus in the mountains and northern foothills, perhaps just enough to kick off an isolated shower or storm late this afternoon or early evening. Gusty southerly winds over most of the plains will decrease with the loss of daytime heating and mixing. Mostly clear skies will then prevail overnight, but a weak cold front will push into northeast Colorado late. On Monday, anticyclonic upslope flow behind the front will dominate the low level flow pattern over the plains. Moisture will remain limited, however, with dewpoints only in the mid 30s to lower 40s. As a result, MLCAPE will be minimal and just a couple hundred J/kg. That said, we will have good daytime heating and mid level instability and rather strong QG forcing in the afternoon. This will bring a better chance of showers and thunderstorms especially over the northern mountains and foothills by late afternoon. Temperatures will be about 15 degrees cooler over most of the plains behind tonight's cold front. .LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday) Issued at 344 PM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 A vigorous upper trough will be moving over the state Monday night and leaving the state Tuesday morning. This system will contain very cold air aloft and loads of dynamic forcing due to the sharp curvature of the trough. In the evening, the surface low pressure area over southeast Colorado will be reaching it lowest values which is going to lead to increasing winds through the rest of the evening, as the cold air contained in the trough spills down onto the plains. Gusty winds from the north and increasing shower activity will make for a busy evening weatherwise. Temperatures aloft will be cold enough to drop freezing and snow levels down around 7500 feet. This should produce several inches of snow on the high peaks and a few inches of snow at and below highway pass levels. Minor impacts to the mountain highways can be expected through Tuesday morning. Higher locations on the Palmer Divide may also see a mix of rain and snow Tuesday morning. Through Tuesday the upper trough is forecast to be moving eastward out onto the plains which will allow for strong subsidence to move over the state. This will bring dry weather back to the state. Temperatures will also be unseasonably cool, only in the 60s on the plains and in the 30s to lower 50s in the mountains. The rest of the week will see upper level ridging over the state with a gradual warming trend. Subsidence will remain strong over the state, suppressing most shower development through about Thursday. By Friday and over the weekend, the pattern should return to normal with a chance of afternoon and evening showers. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Monday evening) Issued at 830 PM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 The south winds are slowly decreasing this evening.
