Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 446 AM MST Sat Nov 7 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 445 AM MST Sat Nov 7 2020 A deepening low over CA will move east today, moving its jet ahead of it to increase southerly flow over our state. Showers have already pushed into western CO due to the increasing lift, and this will move east through the morning, with a few showers possible into the northern mountains by noon. Snow levels in the southerly flow will be quite high, mostly above 11kft. Cloud cover will likely be scattered to broken through the day, so while we'll still have above average high temperatures today, will likely not reach records. Look for low 70s to near 80 over the plains, while the high country sees readings in the mid-40s to upper 50s. Now as the jet approaches, a surface low will be deepening over Wyoming, pulling up southerly winds with diurnal heating allowing mixing of the stronger winds aloft. Look for winds over the high mountains and the eastern plains to increase with gusts in the 25 to 35 mph range, with highest speeds along and south of I-76. The associated cold front will push into western Colorado this evening. Look for shower coverage to increase over the mountains, while the plains will clear out with winds decreasing slightly as the airmass tries to decouple. However, with QG lift increasing dramatically, and the surface gradient remaining strong, and winds aloft increasing as the jet nears, winds will return to the higher speeds of the afternoon then surpass them. 700 mb winds have 50-80 kts over the plains, therefore any motion that will produce slight mixing will bring those down with potential of seeing gusts in the 55 to 60 mph range. Will upgrade the High Wind Watch to a Warning and expand it over the Palmer Divide as well as the far northeastern corner of the plains. The strongest speeds will likely occur over the Palmer Divide, but plenty of opportunity for criteria to be hit across the plains mainly south of I-76. Across the mountains, southerly winds gusting to 40 to 50 mph above treeline this evening will occur ahead of the incoming cold front. QG lift will max out leading into midnight, increasing precipitation production. PW values will be above the 90th percentile, and with the southerly winds pushing moisture along and parallel to the incoming north-south oriented cold front, increased the expected QPF of the storm. The cold front is expected to quickly pass east across the mountains in the midnight to 6am time frame. Gusts may briefly reach up into the 55-70 mph range with the fropa, then downslope winds on the backside of the departing trough may create even stronger gusts leading into the early morning. Confidence on the exact speeds is low, so no highlight at this time. Any precipitation will quickly end however as the downsloping pushes in. Highest precipitation rates will occur in the 2am-5am time frame, with snow levels lowering from 10kft to about 6kft. The higher mountains may see snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour for a few hours, resulting in some storm totals of 2 to 6 inches. This in combination of the winds will likely create poor driving conditions in the pre- dawn hours of early Sunday morning. Like stated before, the downsloping affects as the front pushes east of the divide will result in only light rain showers across the urban corridor in the early morning with the frontal passage. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday) Issued at 445 AM MST Sat Nov 7 2020 Frontal band with showers or virga and the strongest winds should be moving east across the plains in the first half of Sunday morning. Winds will become southwest with some decrease in speed in the late morning as much drier and subsident air moves in. By afternoon, skies should be sunny except maybe some lingering clouds over the northern mountains. Despite some cooling of the airmass, the sunshine and good mixing should still allow temperatures to stay around 60. There's still a little disagreement on the details of how the main trough axis will move out across Colorado on Monday. The operational GFS has been on the more aggressive end, closing off a low moving across southern Colorado. This generates more lift, but it it mainly across southeastern Colorado. Most other models have a more widespread, weaker area of lift that spreads over the northern mountains Monday and across the plains late Monday and Monday night, with some disagreement about the timing. This lift should generate some light precipitation as there's not really anything to stop it. Another batch of cold air will be pulled down as the trough axis passes, which should provide some convergence to help with the lift. The timing may be a bit off to maximize this though, as the colder air should arrive early Monday and the upper level lift may not really be moving east of the mountains just yet. We stuck with PoPs that are above our model guidance, but it's hard to go higher until the timing gets clearer. The lift looks to be sustained but weak, so the snow will be light. We'll start with 2-4 inches in the higher mountains for this period, and less than 2 inches elsewhere. The trough will move east, leading to a period of orographic snow in northwest flow Monday night. There may be a little mountain wave as well, but it doesn't look like much of a high wind threat as speeds are marginal. Warm advection and subsidence kick in Tuesday, though there will still be cooler air at low levels east of the mountains. A shallow moisture layer will likely remain upstream of the Front Range until the next shortwave about Wednesday night. After that, it looks like we'll have further drying. There's some discrepancy with the amount of amplification of the flow beyond that, with some models keeping steady WNW flow and others producing some ridging with a better defined trough upstream. In any event, after a cooler week, it should be at least a little warmer by Friday though it could stay windy in the mountains. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Sunday morning) Issued at 445 AM MST Sat Nov 7 2020 Enhanced drainage winds early this morning are occurring from a deepening surface low in Wyoming. These are stronger than any model has shown, particularly at DEN, so may have to adjust the rest of the day. An approaching weather system will keep increasing south-southwesterly winds today, with gusts to around 30 knots at KAPA and KDEN from the south/southwest after 16-17Z. Gusts may increase to 35 knots or so but remain south/southwest Saturday night, before switching more westerly early Sunday morning as a cold front pushes in from the west. There may be a passing shower which could produce strong, gusty winds in excess of 40 knots late Saturday night/early Sunday morning, mainly in the 09-12Z time frame. Ceilings will be mostly scattered to broken, but remain above 11kft AGL. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 445 AM MST Sat Nov 7 2020 Strengthening southerly winds across the eastern plains today will elevate fire weather concerns due to speeds reaching 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph, and humidity dropping into the 16-20 percent range, which brings them just out of criteria. However periods of increased cloud cover may be just enough to not let humidity drop that low. Humidity will recover just after sunset, however winds will increase rapidly due to an approaching cold front from the west. Southerly winds of 25 to 35 mph sustained with gusts in the 45 to as high as 60 mph will be possible after midnight, with highest speeds east and south of I-76. No precipitation is expected in these areas, however humidity should be up in the 50-80% range by this time. Further west, the mountains will be getting wetting rains and snow overnight as the cold front pushes through. Gusty winds of 40 to 60 mph will be possible ahead, with and behind the front, with strong downsloping winds pushing in after. Winds will gradually diminish behind the front Sunday. It will be dry, but cooler temperatures will keep humidities above Red Flag criteria. Winds will continue over the higher mountains much of this week, with breezy periods at lower elevations.
