Issued at 608 PM CST Wed Jan 15 2020 For the early evening update have put in some chances for snow as some light snow has developed over the upper James River Valley into the Devils Lake Basin. This should scoot off to the east rather quickly, with clearing skies in its wake. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday) Issued at 217 PM CST Wed Jan 15 2020 The main focus for the short term is dangerous wind chills tonight/tomorrow morning and a "warm up" Thursday. Arctic high pressure remains centered over North Dakota this afternoon. It is expected to drift southeast slowly tonight. Tonight/Thursday morning will likely be the coldest day this week. There is a potential of lows tonight of 25 to near 30 below zero across the northern tier of counties. Much of central ND should see lows around 20 to 25 below, but not as cold southwest where lows should be in the single digits below. Regarding wind chills tonight and Thursday: Wind chill values are forecast to remain dangerously cold tonight through much of the day on Thursday with wind chills southwest of the Missouri River falling to around 30 below and wind chills else dropping to around 40 below. Warm advection begins to scour out the arctic air on Thursday, as southeasterly winds on the west side of the arctic high develop and increase ahead of developing low pressure over the Rockies. Most locations should finally rise above zero with locations southwest of the Missouri River potentially climbing into the teens. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday) Issued at 217 PM CST Wed Jan 15 2020 Thursday afternoon into Friday, warm advection really kicks in as a long wave trough moves from the west coast across the Rockies Thursday, and crosses the Plains Friday and Friday night. This will induce a large surface low over Wyoming Thursday night/Friday morning, but the fast-moving upper level trough will dig southward as it moves across the Plains. This will keep the main surface low of this storm system developing southeastward into Nebraska and Kansas Friday before the system turns northeastward towards the Great Lakes Friday night/Saturday. Gusty southeasterly winds will develop ahead of the system by Thursday night and continue Friday until a cold front sweeps southeast across the state. The 12 UTC model suite generally agrees on keeping the bulk of the moisture across the eastern half of the state and produces around 1 to 3 inches of snow for the James Valley. The ECMWF is the exception as the latest 12 UTC run is much further east than previous runs or any other model for the matter. Therefore, due to the uncertainty in the track of the storm snow amounts remain rather uncertain. However, what is more certain is the wind. Strong cold air advection, steep pressure rises and steep low- level lapse rates should produce strong winds Friday evening through Saturday evening. These strong winds (30 mph gusting to 50 mph) combined with fresh snow and light falling snow could produce significant blowing snow leading to blizzard conditions across the Turtle Mountains and James River Valley. As such, a Winter Storm Watch for potential blizzard conditions has been issued. Another Arctic high is forecast to build in behind this shortwave, which means dangerous cold/wind chills appears possible yet again Saturday night through Sunday night. Looking ahead to next weak, there are strong hints that we might be headed toward a much more mild pattern. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Thursday evening) Issued at 608 PM CST Wed Jan 15 2020 Localized MVFR visibility in snow in the early evening over portions of central North Dakota.
