Impactful weather: Minimal. Quite gusty later today and tonight with
rain moving in tonight. Snow may mix in late tonight with a few
tenths of an inch accumulation in some inland areas.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Shallow mid level ridging was moving into the region early this
morning, and winds were switching around out of the south. Warmer
low level air was eating away at some of the deeper overlake
instability, but we still had some lake effect clouds pushing north
through Lakes Michigan and Huron. Outside of areas near Saginaw Bay,
skies have become mostly clear, and with relatively light winds,
good radiational cooling has led to temperatures from the teens and
20s. Further upstream, a shortwave and deep area of low pressure
were pushing into Manitoba, with an associated cold front extending
south through the Dakotas. A warm front extended from the Dakotas
into the mid Mississippi valley. The air mass was pretty dry around
the fronts, but there was enough forcing and unstable air in the
Dakotas to produce some light reflectivities, but nothing was
hitting ground. All of the more bona fide precip (snow), was
occurring in Canada.

A decent amount of sunshine is expected for today, with increasing
southerly winds drawing in more mild air. Clouds will increase to
some degree late today/this evening, but the thicker clouds arrive
tonight. Forcing from DPVA and theta-e convergence increases more
substantially into this evening and after midnight hours along and
ahead of the cold front, resulting in the development of rain
showers. The low level air mass cools into the late night/pre-dawn
hours, to the point where lake effect rain showers develop, and at
least some snow will mix in. Could see a few tenths of an inch of
snow in some inland areas prior to daybreak, while winds stay gusty
coming in out of the W/NW.

Highs today will generally be in the mid to upper 40s. Lows tonight
will largely be in the low to mid 30s, with upper 30s in many
coastal areas.

High impact weather potential: Accumulating snow and strong
winds expected Sunday, with the strongest winds expected along the
shorelines of northwest lower Michigan and the immediate inland
areas of those shoreline counties. Lakeshore flooding is also
possible along the shorelines of northwest lower Michigan and
Presque Isle county.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Winds will ramp up throughout the day Sunday as the
boundary layer mixes with diurnal heating and aided by CAA behind a
cold front trekking through northern Michigan Sunday morning. This
cold front is associated with a low pressure system over James Bay,
which continues it's slow movement eastward across central Canada.
West to northwest winds will continue through Sunday night. The
strongest winds will be behind the front...with a tight pressure
gradient aided by strong CAA Sunday afternoon/evening. Forecast
soundings show wind gusts of around 50kts reaching the surface along
the shorelines and into the immediate inland areas of the Lake
Michigan shorelines/counties. Lakeshore flood warnings and high wind
advisories have been issued for that area. Some models have just
partial mixing producing wind gusts in the mid to upper 40kt range
and full mixing in the low to mid 50kt range over even the inland
areas of northern Michigan...this all aided once again with the
strong CAA. Winds begin veering and finally reaching the
northwesterly flow behind the departing cold front Sunday afternoon
and also beginning to gradually diminish by around midnight. A
strong area of high pressure builds over the midwestern region of
the CONUS with very dry air and subsidence continuing to produce a
tight pressure gradient between it and the area of low pressure
continuing it's eastward trek across Canada and cold northwesterly
flow over the Great Lakes region. There will be delta t/s nearing 16-
20C (with 850 mb temps of -10 to -12C and lake temps of 11 to 14C)
and a bit of moisture to work with. All in all, there is a chance
this will end up being transient banding over the area and not
dumping snow over one location for most of the time...but rather
spreading it over the CWA, limiting accumulation amounts for most
through Sunday. As of right now, highest snow totals through Sunday
appear to be in the 2-4" range over portions of northwest
lower...with some locally higher amounts possible, but not too much
higher expected. There will be some blowing snow with the
gusty northwesterly winds...diminishing visibility...especially in
the heavier bands. Eastern upper will be in the 1-2" range, mostly
over interior portions. Areas in all of northern Michigan along the
lakeshores of the Great Lakes are progged to only receive less than
an inch. This also is in agreement with SREF and GEFS plumes, having
a mean of 1.5" - 2.0" over inland areas of northwest lower and
lesser over eastern upper and all along the shorelines. The last run
has decreased the snowfall amounts...with a spread of 0.5" to 3" at
the highest location of northwest lower Michigan.

Another area of weak low pressure and associated moisture descends
on the forecast area from western Ontario Monday morning, backing
winds to more westerly. As this weak system departs the forecast
area...winds then veer back to northwesterly. 850mb temps will be
cold enough to possibly develop some light lake effect showers
Monday, but chances will diminish throughout the day with a large
area of high pressure and very dry air building into the forecast
area. Any showers will be very light...if any at all even develop
with the anticyclonic flow and drier air pushing in.

Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30s on the cold
northwesterly winds on Sunday, while Monday will warm a
bit...into the low 40s. Lows Sunday night will be in the low to
mid 20s.

A large area of high pressure will provide precipitation free
and quiet weather through the rest of the work week. High
temperatures will begin Tuesday in the upper 40s to low 50s and warm

reaching 60 degrees. Lows Monday night will be in the upper 20s to
low 30s and warm Tuesday night into the 40s and last throughout the
remainder of the forecast period.

to edge into the region is steadily eroding the VFR stratocu cloud

overnight and through the day Saturday.

Deep area of low pressure will advance across Ontario and into the
western Great Lakes on Saturday. Southerly winds increase
starting late overnight in response and become gusty during the
day Saturday into Saturday, along with LLWS become increasing
likely Saturday night. System will eventually push rainfall and
lowering cloud cover back into northern Lower Michigan Saturday
night with conditions trending MVFR...and eventually toward IFR
late Saturday night.

will bring rain for most of nrn Michigan. A secondary cold front

turning out of the SW, then W/NW through tonight as the initial cold

Very gusty winds can be expected Saturday afternoon through Sunday
night. The gusty winds may cause lake shore flooding, initially in
areas impacted by southerly winds, trending to areas impacted by
northwest winds Sunday and Sunday night. Also, accumulating lake
effect snow is expected Sunday.
