Busy weather day with some intense lake effect snow banding
to contend with. As was noted below with the near term forecast
discussion pure les parameters are looking good through the day
(but with little in the way of synoptic support) and this is
likely to be the case into this evening. The flow is pretty much
locked into 310 degrees (northwest) but the bands have shifted
slightly to the east. It's a tough call on where to place
advisories but ended up adding lake effect snow advisories across
Antrim, Kalkaska and Crawford counties as these appear the be the
areas most likely to be impacted the most. This is in addition to
the ongoing advisory across much of Chippewa County where there
is a separate lake effect snow band. Expecting to see a few inches
of snow in targeted areas with locally upwards of a half a foot
or more possible. Gusty northwest winds will likely lead to
blowing and drifting snow as well. Elsewhere scattered to numerous
snow showers are expected. Temperatures should struggle into the
low and mid 30s for highs with wind chills ranging from a rather
brisk mid teens to the mid 20s.

.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

Impactful weather: Possible fairly localized low end advisory
snowfall amounts through tonight. Still gusty.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

The upper level pattern remains fairly amplified early this morning,
with deep troughing lifting over the eastern states, ridging over
the Rockies, and more troughing approaching the west coast. Nrn
Michigan lies in NW flow aloft, with a couple of shortwaves
currently passing through, associated with a sfc low crossing the
srn Great Lakes, and departing forcing from DPVA through the eastern
CWA. In it's wake, pretty cold air at H8 was resulting in delta t's
of 20C to 22C, with mostly unidirectional NW 1000-850mb flow tapping
Lake Superior. This has resulted in a couple of pretty defined bands
of snow, one from eastern upper down through far NE lower, and
another from nrn Lake Michigan down through Houghton Lake. There is
not a ton of synoptic support, but with inversion heights of 5-6kft,
snow intensity was rather good in this setup. Further upstream, no
additional shortwaves/forcing were seen, with sfc high pressure
setting up shop in the Plains/Upper Midwest, where mid level heights
were rising on the forward flank of the Rockies ridging.

The shortwave activity will exit this morning, and the upper ridging
will press eastward into/through the central conus, with sfc high
pressure settling in directly over nrn Michigan by daybreak
Wednesday. The fairly cold and unidirectional NW flow will continue
to tap Lake Superior into the evening. However, the low level winds
do back more west and become anticyclonic through tonight, while mid
level heights rise and inversion heights lower with BL drying due to
WAA. Inversion heights generally remain 5-6kft today, but will drop
to 4-4.5kft tonight. Little to no synoptic support leads to a pure
lake effect setup. Believe that the current bands will not waver too
much, resulting in advisory level snow amounts (2-5 inches or
so locally higher), for central and eastern Chippewa county. Over
into far NE lower and from Antrim and Kalkaska counties down to
Houghton Lake, maybe 2 to 4 inches, and they may require an
advisory as well, but will hold off attm. Most of the snow would
occur through today, with accumulations/snow intensity decreasing
tonight.

Highs today will be in the low to mid 30s. Lows tonight could be
difficult, with maybe portions of NE lower, and Cadillac/Houghton
Lake areas possibly seeing some clearing, while winds become light.
Readings will largely be in the lower half of the 20s, with teens in
areas that see some potential clearing.

.SHORT TERM...(Wednesday through Thursday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal...except for gusty winds
Wednesday into Thursday.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: The upper level troughing that brought
the intense storm system to the Great Lakes on Sunday will finally
be departing by the start of this period...to be replaced by ridging
for midweek. Ridging will start strong but ultimately be diminished
somewhat by a shortwave in northern Canada as upper-level pattern
becomes more broad...though not quite zonal...by the end of the
short term. Surface high pressure will be favored under the
downstream side of the ridge...such that Wednesday may see
relatively quiet weather...though the core of the high pressure may
stay to our south. A northwest-southeast oriented warm front
accompanying the aforementioned shortwave will move through the
region Wednesday into Wednesday night...giving us a shot at least at
cloudiness. General southwesterly flow behind this frontal passage
will leave us in a broad warm sector going into Thursday. A cold
front will slowly sag southward with time going into the end of this
part of the forecast...as the shortwave and associated surface
cyclone track eastward toward Hudson Bay.

Primary Forecast Concerns: Precipitation chances Wednesday night
associated with the warm front and again late Thursday night with
aforementioned saggy cold front, as well as gustiness during this
timeframe. ATTM...it appears that best moisture for the warm
front stays to the north throughout the period. Can't rule out
potential for a stray shower towards Eastern Upper but otherwise
looks pretty dry with the warm front. Basically ditto for the cold
front also...as there is generally a lack of good moisture
available to this system as it scoots by to our north.

Regarding winds...Could be a bit gusty with the front Wednesday into
Wednesday night and perhaps into Thursday...as pressure gradient
tightens up between the surface low in Canada and the surface high
across the southern/southeastern US. Similar patterns in the height
gradient are noted as well...with a 40-50kt 850mb jet moving across
Michigan during this time.

Also worth noting that there is potential for temps to ramp up at
least 10-15 degrees above normal Thursday behind the warm
front...though not as warm as last week's warm spell. Lows Wednesday
night may fall very little, if at all...given decent southwesterly
flow both at the surface and aloft.

High Impact Weather Potential: Another potential weekend storm on
the horizon...

Picking up where the short term left off, a cold front will be
sagging south through northern Michigan for the start of the long
term Friday morning...as a surface cyclone and its associated
shortwave passes by to the north. This cold front looks to stall out
and linger across the region for the start of the weekend leading
into Sunday...when another potential system looks to ride up the
boundary into the Great Lakes...on the downstream side of an
approaching shortwave from the southwest. The timing and track of
this system is far from being nailed down...as there is some
uncertainty in exactly how it all unfolds. Nevertheless...it looks
like we could have another active weekend on our hands. Definitely
something to keep an eye on in the coming days.

Lake effect snow showers will continue to skirt the taf sites
through this evening. Cigs/vsbys will be mainly low end vfr but
could occasionally and sporadically lower to mvfr or even ifr at
times in snow or mixed rain and snow showers. Northwest winds
will continue to be gusty as well during this time. Lighter winds
and vfr cigs are expected to be the rule Wednesday as higher
pressure builds in. Gusty winds are then expected to return later
Wednesday and especially Wednesday night.

Cold and gusty advisory level NW winds for all nearshore waters will
lead to lake effect rain and snow showers today and much of tonight.
Winds speeds drop off and precipitation is expected to end by
daybreak Wednesday, as high pressure moves in overhead. Winds then
ramp back up out of the south late Wednesday and Wednesday night
with the passage of a warm front. Advisory and gale force winds are
expected, especially Wednesday night into Thursday.
