.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will lift northeast across much of the region today
ahead of a strong cold front that will slide through the area
from the west this evening. Strong high pressure follows the
front resulting in strong northwest winds overnight through
Wednesday. The high settles overhead Thursday before unsettled
weather conditions return for late in the week ahead of another
frontal system arriving from the west.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 300 AM EST Tuesday...

Broken area of light/moderate rain associated with increasing warm
advection aloft ahead of the surface warm front to the southwest and
with a weak impulse should lift north of the region early this
morning. However still expecting some spotty light rain or drizzle
to persist into the morning as the 85h southwest jet above the wedge
increases. Thus leaving in high pops despite a relative lull in
steadier rainfall early on. This along with temps continuing to cool
toward freezing per strengthening CAD suggests that the going advisory
may need to be extended out a few hours espcly for areas from
Bath/Rockbridge counties down the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge
where obs show temps near freezing at Bent Mtn including the
Parkway into Floyd county. Otherwise after some decrease in rainfall
this morning, will finally see the upper trough kick the trailing
cold front east with this feature preceded by a broken band of
shallow convection over the mountains toward mid afternoon
before it weakens heading east into the residual wedge. Added
rainfall over the far west looks to be around a half to an inch
this afternoon which could lead to localized flooding issues.
However given a break from lighter rainfall this morning to perhaps
some higher rates later, wont hoist a flood watch at this point.
High temps again tricky pending how fast the warm front lifts
north through the region as may be looking at a range from 50s
southwest to holding in the 30s north/northeast until late before
values rise.

Cold front crosses the region by early this evening followed by an
abrupt surge in northwest winds over the west as the leading edge of
the 85h boundary arrives. Guidance shows strong pressure rises along
with a 50 kt jet just above the inversion which continues to be a
bit higher with each model cycle. Still appears enough for warning
criteria across the NC ridges into Grayson county and close from the
Mountain Empire region east to Roanoke but perhaps moreso with
mixing during Wednesday. Thus have included much of the rest of the
west in a wind advisory tonight through Wednesday excluding the
Greenbrier Valley where more clouds will persist. Otherwise expecting
most of the showers to slide to the east early this evening
followed by a brief period of upslope snow showers west that
could result in an inch or two far northwest slopes before things
dry out some late. Therefore looking at decent pops to start
the evening with drying/clearing out east after midnight and
clouds lingering west. Lows likely hung up a bit via mixing but
still 25-30 mountains to low/mid 30s east.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 310 AM EST Tuesday...

The cold front that will move through the region Tuesday night will
be well off the coast Wednesday morning. Despite cold air entering
the area Wednesday, temperatures are expected to warm into the upper
30s to mid 40s west of the Blue Ridge and upper 40s to mid 50s east.
Wednesday's forecasted temperatures are a few degrees colder than
normal across the mountains to near normal in the piedmont. However,
windy conditions Wednesday will make temperatures feel like they are
in the lower 30s across the mountains and lower 40s east.

Gusty west-northwest winds are the primary threat Wednesday. Gusts
up to 60 mph are possible across the North Carolina High Country and
the Grayson Highlands. Gusts up to 50 mph are feasible across
southwestern Virginia Blue Ridge counties west to the Mountain
Empire and Bluefield-Richlands area. These strong and gusty winds
along with a soggy ground could topple shallow-rooted trees and
cause sporadic power outages. A secondary, but a very low threat is
upslope snow showers along western slopes of southeastern West
Virginia Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Upwards of 2 inches
could fall across Western Greenbrier to a half of an inch in the
Bluefield-Princeton area.

High pressure tracking along the Gulf states will edge northward
Wednesday night, allowing the winds to subside by sunrise Thursday.
As the center of the high moves off the Southeast Coast in the
afternoon, a warm front and southwesterly flow will bring
temperatures in the 50s and 60s across the region. Mild temperatures
will continue Thursday night as a cold front approaches the region
from the west. The 00Z GFS brings rain into the region Thursday
night while the 00Z ECM is slower with rain arriving Saturday.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 331 PM EST Monday...

Broad troughing over the continental United States with an active
northern stream and the next long wave trough crossing through the
east on Saturday. There were timing differences with this trough.
WPC recommending ECMWF which was slower be nearly 24 hours than the
past couple GFS runs. This puts the heaviest precipitation amounts
on Friday night and the frontal passage early Saturday.

Another 40 to 50 knot low level jet Saturday night behind the cold
front but winds speeds will gradually diminish throughout the day
Sunday. Upslope snow showers are likely on the western slopes of the
central Appalachians through Saturday night then as winds and low
level moisture diminish the snow showers will also erode.

Upper ridging builds heights over the southeast United States Sunday
and Monday. Monday surface high pressure crosses over the Mid
Atlantic states then return flow begins warm air advection and
brings moistures back into the region Monday night ahead of a low
over the Lower Mississippi Valley. ECMWF suggest there may be
widespread mid and high clouds on Monday ahead of this system, then
deepening moisture and an increasing probability of precipitation
late Monday. Partial thicknesses support including winter
precipitation in the system Monday. Confidence above average that
the timing and location of this system will change as the week
progresses.

.AVIATION /09Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 1153 PM EST Monday...

Poor flying expected through the taf period as wedge in place
along with very moist low levels will keep most ceiling under
1000 feet. Low clouds/fog hugging the ridge lines so any air
traffic flying across the Appalachians and Blue Ridge will
encounter issues if landing in this area tonight-Tuesday.

Rain still looks likely through 12z, then drizzle. Freezing
rain still confined to LWB for our taf sites for a few hours Tue
morning.

Good slug of moisture arrives Tuesday afternoon so expect
moderate to at times heavy rain. This may send cigs above 1000ft
but confidence is low for now in increasing cigs for now.

Cigs will start to slowly rise as wind shifts southwest then
west behind the front and wind speeds pick up.

Confidence remains high on poor flying conditions in terms of
cigs this period, as well as winds. Confidence is lower on
visbys in fog, rain and freezing rain.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

A cold front will sweep across the area later Tuesday which
should begin the clearing process for midweek. A period of
gusty northwest winds overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Any sub-
VFR restricted to the western flanks of the Appalachians will
exist for Tuesday night into Wednesday.

High pressure with ceilings/visbys trending VFR anticipated
Wednesday night into Thursday. Another storm system will bring
rain and sub-VFR again Friday into Saturday to the region.
