.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will slide eastward across New England and wedge
southwestward along the Appalachian Mountains tonight. Another
frontal system will approach from the west Tuesday, followed by a
secondary more significant Canadian front Wednesday that will bring
much colder air with strong and gusty northwest winds for the later
half of the week. There will be chances for rain and snow with the
mid-week fronts.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 1025 PM EST Monday...

Warm front along eastern edge of higher dew point and warmer air
had moved east through the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys this
evening as high pressure moved off the Mid Atlantic coast. The
wedge along the eastern slopes of the central Appalachians was
weakening but a narrow strip of lower dew points still extended
from central and eastern Pennsylvania into southwest Virginia.

Most short range guidance continues this pattern with little or
no drop in temperatures overnight. Western slopes of the
mountains may even rise a couple of degrees as the warm air
arrives.

Radar showed a broken band of light showers, mainly falling out
of mid level clouds, from western and central Pennsylvania into
eastern Tennessee. Rainfall amounts overnight will be light.

Lower clouds were spreading across central and eastern North
Carolina and into southern Virginia along the leading edge of
some low level moisture being advected off the Atlantic as seen
in the composite layer precipitable water images in the surface
to 850MB layer. Have added some patchy fog into the forecast in
southern Virginia and northern North Carolina along with these
low clouds.

A cold front will approach our region from the west Tuesday and
moves through Tuesday night. Scattered showers developing ahead of
the front, especially west of the Blue Ridge, with a bit better
coverage accompanying the front as it passes. West winds will
increase Tuesday afternoon as the front progresses through the
region. High temperatures will vary from the mid 40s in the
northwest mountains to around 60 degrees in the piedmont.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 345 PM EST Monday...

An arctic surge of air will infiltrate the forecast area
Wednesday and Wednesday night, temperatures and dewpoints taking
a noticeable nose-dive. As this cold air crosses the Great
Lakes, moisture will become banked against the western slopes of
the Appalachians resulting in persistent cloud cover, snow
showers and flurries. Guidance is rather lackluster with respect
to QPF (less than a tenth of an inch liquid), but with 850 mb
temperatures approaching M15 Deg C, this will permit the entire
cloud layer to glaciate and produce measurable snowfall,
especially for the mountains of WV. Snow ratios of greater than
15:1 are likely and this will translate into several inches of
snow from Bluefield WV, northward into the mountains west of
Lewisburg. Expectation is for the snow showers to begin after
midnight Tuesday night, and continue through Wednesday and into
Thursday morning... a 24-36 hour period where accumulation will
be possible. A dusting of snow is possible as far east as the
Blue Ridge with general accumulations of 1 to 3 inches for the
higher elevations west of the Blue Ridge, and upwards of 6
inches for western Greenbrier. Bufkit soundings and local
research also support the potential for some banded snow showers
that may give a local boost to accumulations where the bands
become established. This is not a high confidence snowfall
forecast but fetch of air off of the Great Lakes favors this
sort of snow event. Snow showers will gradually dissipate on
Thursday with little additional accumulations expected to close
out the work week.

The low level wind field will be quite robust through the period.
Expect wind gusts to become strong as the colder air surges in
behind the front Wednesday through Wednesday night, before
slackening off on Thursday. The wind will also cause
blowing/drifting of any snow that falls.

Temperatures will tumble below freezing in the mountains and
then remain there through Thursday night. Temperatures east of
the mountains will also fall below freezing at night, then
struggle to get any higher than the 30s during the day.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 400 PM EST Monday...

An active weather pattern is anticipated for the weekend. Cold
airmass which will be in place Friday-Saturday, will set the
stage for a wintery mess for parts of our region a as southern
stream storm system emanating from the southwestern CONUS dips
to along the Gulf Coast and then heads our way for Saturday. A
blend of the GFS and ECMWF has been used for timing of this
system with onset of precip early Saturday in the mountains,
then spreading northeast, with highest confidence for measurable
precipitation late Saturday and Saturday night. P-type will
favor all snow for the onset, then will become dependent on the
track of the surface low and whether warm air aloft will permit
snow to change to rain and where this rain/snow line will
become established. For now will advertise increasing certainty
for a winter storm to impact the region this weekend, but keep
details with respect to amounts out of the forecast until we can
determine liquid precip potential (QPF) for our forecast area
and then ascertain what percentage of this QPF will fall as
snow.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 1244 AM EST Tuesday...

VFR will continue to be commonplace mainly from Roanoke
westward through the early morning hours of Tuesday. However,
due to influx of shallow moisture, MVFR ceilings and some
patchy MVFR fog will be possible further east into the Virginia
and North Carolina Piedmont affecting TAFs at Danville and
Lynchburg. Confidence in ceilings any lower than MVFR is quite
low. Periods of light, unrestricted -RA will prevail through
the overnight.

After daybreak Tuesday, the lee nocturnal inversion is expected
to break and skies will begin to scattered across the Piedmont,
thus returning conditions to VFR. Across the mountains, ceilings
will remain mostly MVFR through the morning hours, but reach low
end VFR by the afternoon.

Winds will become gusty in the wake of the passage of tonight's
upper trough, and in advance of a cold front that will
approaching the region tomorrow.. Just prior to the passage of
this cold front, there may be a brief period of low level wind
shear as winds aloft increase prior to a surface response.

Overall moderate confidence in ceilings, visibilities and winds
during the taf period.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

VFR should prevail east of the Blue Ridge with downslope
northwest winds, but MVFR ceilings could linger into Tuesday
night across the far west due to upslope conditions. Northwest
flow aloft will push a secondary front into the area by
Wednesday with more gusty northwest winds and upslope sub-VFR
cigs. Snow showers and brief periods of IFR-LIFR conditions may
occur in the western mountains mid week, but elsewhere it should
remain MVFR at the worst, and largely VFR under diminishing
winds by Friday. Another storm approaches from the southwest
Saturday into Saturday night with IFR conditions possible.
