Across the eastern plains, a cold front backed in during the evening hours and has cooled temps down into the 20s for most locations, but as of 3 am still had not pushes as far as Walsenburg and Trinidad, where temps remained steady in the 40s to near 50F. Today...There will be some patchy low clouds and light fog across the plains early this morning due to the cold front pushing into the area overnight, but conditions should start clearing up by midday. The upper trough pushes east into Idaho and Nevada today, continuing light snow showers along the Continental Divide as well as increasing the southwest winds as the pressure gradient tightens. Wind gusts of 45 to 50 mph will be possible this morning and afternoon across the higher elevations as well as for the wind prone areas along the I-25 corridor, such as the Air Force Academy, the Arkansas River Valley through Fremont County into western Pueblo County, and in the vicinity of Walsenburg. Though the wind speeds are not expected to reach high wind criteria, they will still be strong enough at times to cause some travel issues for high profile vehicles traveling along the interstate and over mt passes. In addition, the stronger winds will aid in the rapid spread of any fires that do start today, so outdoor burning is not recommended. An additional 1 to 2 inches of new snow will be possible through the day today for spots along the Continental Divide. As for temps, look for highs in the mid 30s to mid 40s for the high valleys, and 50s to near 60F for the plains. Tonight...The upper trough moves into the Great Basin tonight, and this is when the snow is forecast to increase in intensity and coverage for all of the mts but especially along the Divide. Decided to upgrade the watch to a Winter Storm Warning for the Eastern San Juans with 8 to 12 inches of new snow expected, then a Winter Weather Advisory for the La Garitas and the mts of Lake and Chaffee Counties, where 5 to 10 inches are possible. All these highlights will run from 5 pm this evening until 5 pm tomorrow evening. Strong winds aloft will continue to be an issue, and will create areas of blowing and drifting snow and hazardous travel conditions over the mt passes tonight. Expect low temps in the teens for the high valleys, and in the 20s to around 30F for the plains. Moore .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 402 AM MST Tue Feb 5 2019 Wednesday: A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the eastern San Juans and a Winter Weather Advisory for the La Garita, Sawatch, and Mosquito Mountains through 1700 MST on Wednesday. The trough axis will continue to propagate over southern Colorado on Wednesday. The associated jet streak, located south and east of the upper level trough, has winds (around 100 kts) oriented orthogonally over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains will cause some gusty winds, especially over the southern I-25 corridor near Trinidad and Walsenburg. Expect wind gusts around 45 to 50 mph. Most of the snow will remain over the mountains, the San Luis Valley should remain dry with the exception a rogue snow band developing. The plains should also remain dry, but there will be a few hours Wednesday evening when the Palmer Divide could see some light snow. The high temperature forecast was quite tricky for Wednesday afternoon. The winds mentioned in the previous paragraph will force air down the slope of the Rockies, which will create above average high temperatures over the southeastern plains, but an encroaching cold will keep temperatures cooler behind it. For example in Lamar, statistical guidance has a high of 43F or 60F for Wednesday afternoon. The verification will be determined by the speed at which the cold front develops over the region. Right now I have the front developing from the northeast to the southwest at 1700 MST on Wednesday. Gusty northerly winds will develop behind the cold front, which will bring wind chill values to the single digits over the plains during the overnight hours. Low temperatures will span the single digits to the teens over the plains, the San Luis Valley will be below zero, the upper Arkansas River Valley will span below zero to single digits, and the mountains will be below zero. Once again, there will be gusty winds as the cold front passes, so wind chill values will be in the single digits across the region. Thursday: High temperatures on Thursday will be quite chilly, expect the plains to span the teens to low 20s, the San Luis Valley and upper Arkansas River Valley to be in the 20s, and the mountains to only reach the single digits. Scattered snow showers are expected over the mountains as the broad trough axis continues to develop easterly. Heavy snow accumulations are not expected at this time, but continuous light snow is expected. Friday: A weak ridge aloft will keep conditions dry, skies mostly clear, and winds light over the region. High temps will be around average for the plains and still below average for the San Luis Valley. The Weekend: The next storm system begins to develop over the region Saturday afternoon. At this point in time the storms appears to be trending towards a more progressive, quick moving shortwave, so snow is only expected over the higher elevations. Associated with the shortwave is a weak jet streak, which is forecast to bring some gusty winds over the eastern plains and at ridgeline over the mountains. There is still plenty of uncertainty over where and how strong the shortwave will be, so check back as we ingest more data. Monday: Long range guidance suggests another upper level trough will propagate over the region. At this point, the trough is resolved to develop over northern Colorado, which would bring snow to the central mountains, but leave the rest of the region dry. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning) Issued at 402 AM MST Tue Feb 5 2019 KCOS and KPUB: MVFR to IFR conditions across the plains this morning until around 17z due to patchy low clouds and light fog. By 17z sfc winds shift to a more southwest to west direction and the lower levels will mix out, producing VFR conditions. There will be some LLWS through the morning as winds at 020ft will be strong and out of the WSW, while at the sfc winds will be light and out of the ESE. Will include in the KCOS TAF, but will leave out of KPUB. KALS: VFR conditions over the next 24 hrs likely, with brisk SSW winds forecast. Snow showers will move into the vicinity by 03z tonight, but are expected to push into KALS until after the forecast period.
