.SYNOPSIS...
Cooler than normal conditions will continue through the end of
next week as a series of upper level disturbances move through the
region. Very windy conditions are expected on Sunday afternoon
into early Monday and on Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday when the
strongest disturbances pass through. A slight chance of showers
and thunderstorms will be possible over higher terrain locations
of southeast California including Joshua Tree National Park and
north and east of the Phoenix metro area.

.DISCUSSION...
Early this morning, dry westerly flow aloft was in place across
Arizona and IR imagery showed clear skies area-wide. For today, a
transitory and short-lived high pressure ridge will bring a modest
warming trend allowing high temps to climb into the mid to upper
80s, however readings will still remain well below seasonal normals.
Increasing high clouds from the west during the day will help limit
the warming just a bit.
For most of the 7 day forecast period, Sunday through next Friday,
we are looking at cooler - and at times much cooler - than normal
high temperatures coupled with unsettled conditions as a series of
low pressure systems develop and move into and through the desert
southwest. The latest IVT forecast are showing a bit more potential
for some vapor transport into the lower deserts with these upper
lows but overall moisture still looks to be limited and rainfall
totals - if any - will be meager. GEFS plumes continues to paint a
very dry picture for Phoenix with the current operational member
showing no accumulation through 7 days while a handful of members
suggest low values, well below one tenth of an inch, for the mid
week system next week.
There will be two significant weather systems set to affect the
desert southwest during the 7 day forecast period, the first will
move through the area Sunday night into Monday, bringing strong and
gusty southwest winds to the deserts - especially far southeast
California - on Sunday afternoon and evening. Blowing dust is
possible and patchy blowing dust is currently in the forecast.
Although precipitation will be meager, there will be a slight chance
of showers mainly north and east of Phoenix Sunday night and Monday
with chances of rain over higher terrain areas east of Phoenix on
Monday. An isolated thunderstorm is possible but should not affect
the greater Phoenix area. This system will cool the deserts into the
70s on Monday. Monday may be the coolest of the 7 days for Phoenix
with an expected high of just 76 degrees.
The second system will move through Tuesday night into Wednesday and
will also bring breezy to windy condition which will be very similar
to Sunday. A Wind Advisory has been issued for Sunday afternoon and
evening for much of far southeast California (and actually there
will be a long running advisory through 12z Wednesday for the wind
prone and favored zone CAZ562 over far southwest Imperial County).
Additional wind advisories may well be needed with the second system
on Tuesday. At this time this second system does not appear overly
wet but will be sufficient to lead to a few showers over south-
central Arizona mainly during the day on Wednesday. The threat of
thunder appears rather minimal at this time, partly because the main
low center (and cold air aloft) is forecast to stay well to the
north of Phoenix. Again, high temperatures will fall into the upper
70s to low 80s over the lower deserts on Wednesday behind the cold
front.
For Thursday into Friday, a large baggy low pressure trof will
remain over much of the western CONUS but much of the energy will
actually sag to the southwest and form a weak upper low off the
southern California coast. This keeps a drier southwest flow aloft
in place over the area and allows for a modest warming trend through
Friday. By Friday the warmest deserts may actually reach to about 90
degrees but this would still be well below seasonal normals; the
normal high in Phoenix on Friday is 97 degrees.

with a later than typical wind shift out of the east across

Monday through Friday:
Cooler than normal temperatures with periods of gusty winds will
continue through the end of next week as a series of disturbances
move across the region. Gusty conditions are expected on Monday
with very gusty conditions expected on Tuesday afternoon through
early Wednesday when widespread wind gusts in excess of 25 mph
across the lower deserts and gusts in excess of 40 mph will occur
over higher terrain locations in southeast California. Most areas
will generally remain dry aside from the higher terrain north and
