.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will continue to move north through Atlantic Canada
today with high pressure generally dominating our weather
through Saturday. The next cold front will move through late
Sunday into Sunday night followed by high pressure returning
Monday. A coastal storm may then develop by late Tuesday into
early Wednesday with a strong cold front and arctic high
pressure following in its wake.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Through the rest of the morning and early afternoon, deep low
pressure will continue to move northward over Atlantic Canada
with arctic high pressure moving into the Tennessee Valley. This
will maintain a brisk westerly flow with a continuing cold
advection pattern. Forecast soundings indicate a deep mixed
layer so expect some wind gusts in the 20-30 mph range as
stronger winds aloft are mixed down. There will also be some
diurnal Cu developing so generally expect a mix of sun and
clouds. Highs will be mainly in the middle to upper 30s except
20s over the southern Poconos and low 40s over parts of the
Delmarva.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SATURDAY/...
For Friday night, winds diminish as a surface ridge builds in
extending northeast from the high near Tennessee. This will
result in mainly clear skies with colder temperatures. Generally
expect lows in the teens to low 20s with some single digit
readings possible in the southern Poconos.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Main challenges in the long-term include a weak system glancing
the northwest fringes of the area Sunday, a stronger system
likely producing some snow across a good chunk of the forecast
area Tuesday and Wednesday, and then the intrusion of bone-
chilling air.
We start the period with southwest midlevel flow and a digging
perturbation in Ontario (12z Saturday). The perturbation
intensifies as it reaches the Great Lakes by 12z Sunday. Light
snow will break out in Ontario/Quebec southward to the eastern
Ohio Valley and adjacent Appalachians Sunday morning and spread
east-northeastward through the day as the perturbation pivots
across the trough axis. The question will be how far south this
perturbation digs, with a farther south solution implying more
of a chance some of this snow reaches the CWA. The 00z CMC
suggests very little snow reaches the area, with the ECMWF only
a little more aggressive in this regard. The GFS is most
suggestive of this threat, mainly for the Poconos and far
northwest New Jersey. Current thinking is that models are
probably underplaying the threat here a little bit, given
potential orographic lift combined with the rather decent look
of the perturbation and the associated field of omega
downstream. The main threat appears to be Sunday afternoon and
evening, though I did broad-brush the PoPs somewhat given model
tendencies to be too brief with the snow showers in the higher
terrain of the northwest CWA. Any accumulations in the Poconos
look to be light (under an inch). Given the vigorous look to the
perturbation, cannot rule out some light rain/snow showers
farther southeast into the Lehigh Valley and vicinity, but
chances seem pretty low at this time.
On Saturday, temperatures will be cold, and I went below
guidance for highs, as I suspect the warmer guidance (e.g.,
MEX/GFS) is too quick to bring in warm advection. Notably, the
ECMWF is several hours slower and several degrees colder for
Saturday. The GFS looks too fast compared to model consensus
through the forecast, in fact, and was generally weighted on
the low side throughout the medium range. Temperatures will warm
substantially on Sunday as warm advection commences by Saturday
night and continues through much of the day. Highs on Sunday
will likely be 10-15 degrees warmer than Saturday's. However,
the aforementioned system bringing light snow chances to the
Poconos and vicinity will also bring a cold front through the
area Sunday night, so temperatures will drop again on Monday,
probably back to or perhaps a little above Saturday's highs.
Three midlevel vorticity maxima will play a pivotal role in what
transpires across the Mid-Atlantic early next week. A lead
perturbation in the northern plains 00z Monday digs
southeastward to the Midwest by 00z Tuesday. Meanwhile, a
southern-stream perturbation with origins in the Canadian
Rockies digs to the Front Range by this same time. Finally, a
strong/large-scale vortex will shift eastward into the Canadian
prairies. What evolves thereafter is the source of forecast
uncertainty today. The 00z ECMWF weakens the lead northern-
stream perturbation as it approaches downstream ridging in the
Great Lakes and eastern North America. This allows the
southern-stream perturbation to pivot readily eastward
meridionally in sync with the Canada longwave trough. Phasing
occurs across the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys Tuesday night, with the
highly-amplified trough acquiring a negative tilt. A surface low
in the Great Lakes region lifts northeastward as a shortwave
trough punches eastward into the Great Lakes (at the base of the
Canada longwave trough), while cyclogenesis commences with the
southern-stream perturbation in the central/southern
Appalachians Tuesday evening. This low moves rapidly
northeastward through the northern Mid-Atlantic Tuesday night
and Wednesday morning. It then intensifies quickly as it races
northeast to the Canadian Maritimes Wednesday night.
The GFS shows a very different evolution. The lead northern-
stream perturbation weakens less, while the southern-stream
perturbation shears out to the south of the Canada longwave
trough. Thus, the Great Lakes low lifts northeastward and
weakens, and a second low develops to the east in vicinity of
New England. Finally, the CMC is fairly similar to the ECMWF,
but the southern-stream perturbation is slower, so it phases
with the Canada longwave trough farther east, and develops a
surface low well to the east of the ECMWF position Tuesday night
and Wednesday.
Any of these scenarios produces precipitation in our area
Tuesday and Wednesday, but timing, duration, intensity, and
character of the precipitation are very sensitive to these quite
different large-scale depictions. The GFS is much faster, since
it has little phasing in its system evolution, so the
precipitation is generated mostly via the development of the
secondary cyclone in New England on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the
ECMWF and CMC generate most of the precipitation Tuesday night
as the surface low to the south moves northeastward through or
just east of the area. The CMC/ECMWF generate snow on the
northwest fringe of the precipitation shield, aided by upper-
level jet coupling and strong frontogenetical lift in the low
levels to the north/west of the low's track. Finally, the
CMC/ECMWF hint at slightly higher QPF, with more of it coming in
the form of snow (especially northwest of the Fall Line). This
makes sense given the somewhat slower evolution, the development
of the low to the south/east of the area, and the stronger
frontogenetical lift and upper-level divergence generated.
There is potential with this system for some decent snow,
especially in the northwest CWA and especially if a solution
like the ECMWF or CMC verifies. Farther south and east,
temperatures are more marginal, so snow amounts would be lower
(which would also be true if the storm's track trends westward).
A lot of question marks here, and models have shown high run-
to-run variability in addition to their large relative
discrepancies. Kept PoPs from Monday night (owing to potential
warm-advection precipitation in advance of the main system) to
Wednesday, though this will likely be narrowed temporally in
later forecasts. The general evolution is for rain or a
rain/snow mix changing to snow by Tuesday night and diminishing
Wednesday. For the most part, this seems like a decent
compromise/consensus choice for now, until models settle on how
the three perturbations evolve.
After the system moves out by Wednesday night, the cold
temperatures will be the story. Guidance is trending colder,
which is not unusual as the event approaches. The large Canada
vortex digs into the area, at least briefly, to end the week,
and very cold air will filter into the region. Statistical
consensus guidance has temperatures around 20 in Philadelphia
for highs and around or maybe below 10 for lows for Thursday.
Noteworthy, though, are some large differences among the
individual statistical members. The 00z EC guidance is much,
much warmer (by nearly 15 degrees, give or take) and appears to
