.SYNOPSIS...
Increasing winds and snow showers in the Cascades are expecting
for Tuesday. Expect strong blustery north winds on Wednesday as
snow chances decrease. Much colder temperatures and drier weather
is on tap for the holiday weekend.

.DISCUSSION...

...Very Windy Conditions Wednesday...

Today and Tonight: The day starts off with early morning freezing
fog through the Northern Valleys and extreme Eastern WA and ID
Panhandle. This will change as a deepening low drops into the
Southern OR coast. It is expected to push through Southern OR for
this period and into Wednesday. The main threat will be increasing
winds. The tighter gradient will bring breezy northerly winds. By
the night time, winds will be reaching into the upper 20s with gusts
near 40s. Winds will continue to increase into Wednesday. The
Leeside of the Cascades could see a couple of inches of snow as wrap
around moisture from the Low is pressed into the area. This could
produce some travel impacts through the Mountain Passes.
Temperatures will be be in the 30s to upper 20s for highs and 20s
for the Lows. /JDC

Wednesday and Thursday: Models remain in good agreement that a
very windy pattern will setup across the Inland Northwest
Wednesday and Wednesday night before slowly waning through the day
Thursday. In addition to winds, light to locally moderate snow
will be possible in the Cascades and along the Highway 97 corridor
around Wenatchee and Chelan. The culprit: A very deep low
pressure system tracking into south-central Oregon and cold
Canadian high sliding down the Continental Divide. A tight packing
of pressure gradients between these features will create the
strong winds generally blowing from north or northeast to
south/southwest. Over the last few days, there has been some
differences amongst the models regarding the strength of this
gradient. With the latest runs, we have seen the EC/Canadian trend
in the direction of the stronger GFS which is leading to
increasing confidence for a significant wind event for our region.

* Wind: There is high confidence for strong north to northeast
  winds Wednesday and Wednesday night. Winds will start off
  breezy Thursday and decrease slowly throughout the day. The
  strongest speeds will impact the North Idaho Panhandle, Columbia
  Basin, Okanogan Valley, and favored drainage's of Northeastern
  WA. Sustained winds of 25-35 mph with gusts to 45 mph are likely
  in these areas. Localized stronger sustained winds of 35-40 mph
  with gusts 50-60 mph are possible. At this time, looks like the
  highest threat for these stronger, potentially damaging winds
  would be in North Idaho around Sandpoint, Rathdrum, Coeur D
  Alene, Priest Lake, and spreading into areas of Northeastern WA
  around Deer Park, Wellpinit, and other east-west drainages. The
  exposed ridge-lines will also intersect these strong northeast
  winds aloft and potentially experience gusts in excess of 60 mph
  from ducting under a stable layer around 800 mb. I have been
  tracking a pressure gradient from Yaak, MT to Pendleton,
  OR...and seen a 2mb increase in the European and Canadian toward
  17mb while the GFS remains consistent around 20 mb. The hi-res
  UW wrf is now available for this time period and very supported
  of the aforementioned thinking. The long duration of these
  sustained winds and direction will likely add to additional
  impacts.

* Snow: Energy and moisture coming around the top of the low
  under easterly flow will bring snow chances to the Cascades.
  Drier air coming in with the northeast winds will undercut the
  moisture so cannot rule out snow showers or flurries in N Idaho
  and Ern WA but the main threat for light snow accumulations
  Wednesday into Thursday morning will be in Central WA. The
  upsloping flow will enhance the lift bringing a decent shot for
  a few inches around Blewett Pass and Mission Ridge. Light snow
  will also be possible around Wenatchee and Chelan but
  accumulations are less certain with temperatures warming near to
  above freezing. A trend toward lower snow ratios as led to less
  accumulation in the forecast for the lower elevations.

* Impact: Downed trees and power outages remain the greatest
  concern for this event. Motorists should also be prepared for
  challenging cross-winds on particular stretches of highways.
  Light weight objects will likely be blown around or become
  airborne. Wind chills Wednesday and Thursday will be quite
  brisk...dipping into the teens or colder. Wintry travel will be
  possible across portions of Central WA including Blewett Pass,
  Stevens Pass, and Highway 2/97 in and out of the Wenatchee Area.
  Confidence is lowest for snow accumulations/impacts in the
  lower elevations around Wenatchee and Chelan.

Friday and Saturday: The upcoming weekend will start off cold and
dry as a stable weather pattern develops. The area of low
pressure over Oregon will fill and slowly drift into the Central
US while a another low drifts into the Eastern Pacific. High
pressure will strengthen between these features and deliver the
dry weather. There are a few weak pieces of energy expected to
pinch off the departing low and retrograde into the Eastern Pac
but these look to be dry and only equate to some passing clouds.
Temperatures will be below normal with highs only topping out in
the upper 20s to mid 30s while lows fall into the teens. Some of
the sheltered valleys of the Cascades and Camas Prairie with fresh
snow will stand a shot of single digit readings.

Sunday through Tuesday: Ensemble models are starting to trend
toward a more active weather pattern with the offshore low coming
inland and bringing an increasing risk for precipitation. There
is a lot of spread with timing and the latest National Blend of
Models has some PoPs but they remain very low. I expect we will
see an up tick in precipitation chances in the coming days,
especially Monday and Tuesday. Cold air in place will favor
precipitation falling as snow initially so stay tuned. If this
comes in Sunday, this is something to consider if you plans to
return home or back to school. /sb

.AVIATION...
06Z TAFS: A disturbance moving in tonight and early Monday will
bring limited snow shower chances over LWS/PUW, approaching
GEG/SFF/COE toward morning. Otherwise expect MVFR/IFR conditions
to develop. Some local LIFR conditions are possible around SFF/GEG
with fog and some of the low clouds may nose toward MWH overnight
or early Tuesday too, as the flow turns more easterly. However
confidence is low. Overall flight conditions are projected to
improve through the morning to afternoon Tuesday, with the threat
of snow winding down in the east. However a stronger low
approaches Tuesday increasing middle to high clouds again. Some
snow may also start to develop around EAT in the afternoon with
better chances toward evening in the upslope flow into that
region, with potential MVFR/IFR conditions. Winds will also be on
the increase, first around MWH/EAT and later toward COE/SFF/GEG.
There is the potential for some LLWS toward end of this TAF period
toward GEG/SFF/COE. /Cote'
