...COLD, SNOWY WEATHER RETURNS LATE TUESDAY...
.DISCUSSION...The next winter weather system to affect the
northern Rockies will arrive tomorrow afternoon. Normally this
would be a very significant event for western Montana, but
considering the region already had a strong, arctic type system in
late September this system won't even be the strongest we've seen
this season for most of western Montana. The exception for Montana
will be southwest Montana and the region around Butte and across
central Idaho where it be the coldest and snowiest storm of the
season so far.
IDAHO: The cold front with this system will drop out of the north
and set up upslope flow over the Camas Prairie of central Idaho.
The current forecast timing of the front has snow starting on the
prairie Tuesday night with a few hours of moderate to heavy snow during
the Wednesday morning commute. In the early morning, it is likely
that snow will be able to accumulate on the roads, but as the sun
comes up it will be a battle between the snow rates and the
warmth of the ground to see if snow accumulates. Some slushy roads
at a minimum are likely on the prairie if they aren't snow
covered. By late morning the snow rates will drop off enough that
the snow should just melt through the day. Locations further back
in the mountains of central Idaho like Elk City and Dixie will see
4-7 inches of snow Wednesday.
Lemhi county, Idaho will receive a few more inches of snow, but
due to the later timing of the arrival of the front impacts are
expected to be minimal with the usual exceptions of Lost Trail
Pass, Williams Cr. Summit, and Gilmore Summit.
Temperatures Thursday and Friday mornings will be the coldest so
far this season in central Idaho with many locations that may have
barely seen a frost thus far dropping into the mid 20s for the
first hard freeze of the season for places like Riggins and
Orofino.
MONTANA: This storm system is supported by a strong jet stream
which will support gusty winds in northwest Montana starting
tomorrow afternoon. Most areas will see gusts in the 30 and low 40
mph range at least briefly. When the colder air starts pushing
westward, strong gusty easterly winds are expected from Eureka
south towards Flathead Lake. Our confidence is high that at least
45 mph wind gusts will be common in the wind prone areas, but
there is a chance that a few gusts to 50 mph will occur. During
the end of September storm, the winds were most likely gusting up
to 60 mph which caused more damage. This storm could cause spotty
tree damage and power outages. The strong winds should weaken by
Wednesday morning.
When the cold and snow arrive, they will hit the Continental
Divide the hardest. East winds in Glacier National Park and over
Marias Pass will cause downsloping, and the precipitation will
decrease rapidly further west of the divide. A winter weather
watch remains in effect for this area with a warning in effect
east of the Continental Divide. On Tuesday we will make the final
determination of whether to upgrade to a warning or an advisory
on the west side of the divide.
Further south around MacDonald Pass and Butte, we opted to upgrade
the watch to a warning due to higher confidence in dangerous
winter weather conditions from MacDonald Pass, Homestake Pass, and
Butte and further west into the Anaconda and Pintlar mountains.
AFTER THE STORM: A ridge builds over the region to end the week
with a warming trend heading into the weekend. By next weekend
afternoon temperatures will recover into the 50s and low 60s in
western Montana and even some mid 60s in central Idaho.

Wind gradients relax overnight, then pick up again with frontal
passage Tuesday morning. This front arrives at KGPI around
08/1500Z and continues southward to KMSO. It arrives at KBTM and
KSMN after 08/1600Z. This feature will bring gusty winds and
