.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday night)

Only change to the forecast for snowfall Friday was to slow down the
progression of higher PoPs on both the front end and back end. So
we're still expecting 3-4" of snow over pretty much our entire area
over a 12 hour period, that 12 hour period has just been shifted
back in time about 3 hours, so little/no impacts are expected for
the morning commute Friday in the Twin Cities, but the evening
commute will be a slower one.

Our system for tomorrow could be found this afternoon over the
Washington/Oregon region. Tonight, this wave will get hooked up into
the stronger flow to the south of the Polar low over Canada, which
will allow this wave to get quickly ejected across the northern
Plains and upper MS Valley. Models show about 80 dam height falls in
a 12 hour period and these height falls will provide the broad
synoptic lift for our widespread light snow event. As mentioned
earlier, the only significant change we've seen in the guidance is
to slow down the timing of the snow a few hours. Otherwise, models
are fairly uniform in putting out about 0.2" of QPF everywhere,
which will translate into a widespread 3-4" of snow. There are
indications in the hi-res models that we could see a narrow band of
QPF amounts closer to 0.3", which would could push localized amounts
to near 5". At this point, model agreement on if/where a narrow band
such as this will setup is too low to try and put that in, so we
have the widespread 3-4" currently forecast.

As for headlines, amounts of up to 4 inches, little wind, and no
mixed precip put this just below tresholds for needing a winter
weather advisory. The one concern is that the timing will likely
result in a slower evening commute for the Twin Cities metro.
However, forecasts for road surface temepratures indicate
temperatures getting into the low 30s for several hours during the
afternoon as the snow is falling, warm enough for chemicals to work
and keep things mainly slush as opposed to adehering to the surface.
Given expected snowfall amounts and relatively mild road
temperatures expected, this event falls below what we would want to
see to start issuing advisories at this time.

We did linger snow chances longer through Friday evening, especially
in western WI, but otherwise subsidence assocatied with pressure
rises ahead of the 1050mb high over the Canadian prairies will lead
to another cold night. We do expect some clearing in western MN
during the night and have seen guidance trend colder with air coming
in Friday night, so we did back off on lows some out in western MN,
with sub-zero lows again forecast from St. Cloud to New Ulm on
west.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Long term trends continue with below normal temperature trends and a
couple of chances for snow.

Following the Friday snow system, we see slow infiltration of arctic
air into the CWA. As this colder air arrives we could see a small
chance of flurries or snow showers into Saturday afternoon. Winds
remain low enough to limit significant blowing snow concerns.
Previous 00Z NAEFS 850mb temperature standardized anomalies continue
to show 2 to 3 standard deviation below average across the region,
developing Saturday night and moving through Monday. This lends us
forecast temperatures some 30 degrees below normal Sunday and
Monday. We may not see record low temperatures, but we could see so
me record low maximum temperatures during this period, as
temperatures struggle to warm through the single digits above zero.
Along with the cold temperatures, winds do increase some as the
surge of the coldest air arrives. The pressure gradient looks strong
enough to bring down those 925mb forecast winds of around 25 to 30
knots to the west both Sunday afternoon and Monday. THis will generate
ate wind chill values 25 to 35 below both  Saturday night into
Sunday morning and Sunday night into Monday morning. THe only
limiting factor is the possibility of more clouds dropping into at
least the northern half of the CWA late Sunday night, slowing the
cooling forecast at the moment. Along with the clouds, we held onto
the low chance PoPs over the northern CWA Monday as another lobe
of the upper trough drops over the western Great Lakes.

Some slow temperature moderation and dry conditions are expected
after Monday. Temperatures will still range some 10 to 20 degrees
below normal. The deterministic models diverge after Wednesday on
handling some possible trough energy being ejected from the western
CONUS trough. The GFS remains more amplified with its system and
lifts a more significant trough into the area with more snow. The
ECMWF drops most of its energy farther south, perhaps clipping only
far southern Minnesota with snow.  Something to monitor for later
forecasts.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon)

No issues until Friday morning when a widespread light snow event
impacts the area. Models are all fairly similar in their timing of
the snow, which is coming in a little slower than previously
forecast. Given the limited spread in guidance, confidence is
fairly high in the snow timing in these TAFs. Expect VIS with snow
to mainly be in the 1-2sm range, though a few bouts of VIS down to
3/4sm will be possible. However, this far out, did not litter the
TAFs with tempo groups for that potential. Little wind is expected
tonight/Friday, so there will be no blowing snow concerns.

KMSP...Expect snow to set in quickly between 13z and 15z and not
really start to let up until between 00z and 02z. We may see MVFR
cigs as early as 10-12z, but sub-VFR cig chances don't really look
to kick up until the snow moves in.
