Area forecast discussion, Feb 10, 11:14 PM CST, 4 hours 47 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN
1114 PM CST Sun Feb 10 2019

.SHORT TERM...(Tonight)
Issued at 307 PM CST Sun Feb 10 2019

The storm system that brought up to 4 or 5 inches of snow in the
past 9 hours across southern Minnesota, has shifted north and east
across central Minnesota, and into west central Wisconsin. There
remains some isolated heavier snowfall in bands in east central
Minnesota, but this area should quickly move out of Minnesota by
sunset. West central Wisconsin may see a burst of heavier snowfall
early this evening, but the bulk of the heavier snowfall should
shift north into northern Wisconsin this evening.

As with previous storms over the Upper Midwest in the past week or
so, there has been stronger mesoscale processes embedded in the main
short wave. This has led to higher snowfall totals than forecast.
However, most of the snow has been dry, and fluffy with higher
snowfall ratios (15-1 or 25-1) than climatology. Typically,
snowfall ratios in the Upper Midwest average around 12-1. Due to
these mesoscale processes, and higher than normal snowfall ratios,
snowfall amounts have been higher than forecast. Even today's
forecast will likely be too low in some areas due to this process.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Sunday)
Issued at 307 PM CST Sun Feb 10 2019

The respite between accumulating snowfall will be brief, as the
next system is on schedule to arrive just over 24 hours from now.
The main adjustment to today's forecast with this next system was
to hedge the heavy snowfall band farther southeast. The
surface/H7 low tracks continue to slip southeast of a typical 6+
snowfall for KMSP proper, although the southern/eastern portion of
the forecast area (south central MN into west central WI) would
still have a decent potential to receive warning-criteria totals.
Did include the Twin Cities in the Winter Storm Watch at this
point, but they could end up escaping the Warning-worthy totals.

The other issue we could see with this system is a period of
freezing precipitation before the onset of snow, per bufkit
soundings which show lack of saturation in the dendritic layer
for several hours. Blowing snow will also be possible on Tuesday
as northwest winds become gusty.

In the wake of this system, semi-zonal flow persists through most
of the remainder of the work week.

What was looking like another potential storm system for Thursday
into Friday has lost some steam, but it still looks like several
inches are possible.
