A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Todd, Douglas, Pope, Stevens, Swift, Chippewa, Lac Qui Parle, and Yellow Medicine counties, where an additional 3 to 5 inches of snow is possible through tonight. The highest snowfall accumulations are expected along the Minnesota South Dakota border. Winds will increase Monday, resulting in blowing and drifting snow, which will further exacerbate conditions. Additional ice accumulations up to one two tenths of an inch are possible as well. Light freezing rain or freezing drizzle will spread east into central and east central Minnesota tonight as temperatures fall, then transition to snow Monday and Monday night. Snowfall accumulations will generally range from 2 to 5 inches. West central Wisconsin could see some light freezing precipitation late tonight and early Monday morning, but the main concern there will be accumulating snowfall Monday afternoon and Monday night, with 4 to 7 inches of snowfall possible. One to 3 inches are expected there tonight. As temperatures drop to near freezing overnight, the drizzle may become freezing drizzle across eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Another round of snow will move in Monday and impact mainly eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin through Monday evening. Snow may be heavy at times, producing rates of 1 inch per hour. Snow accumulation will range from 4 to 8 inches, generally along and east of I-35, with amounts gradually tapering down to around an inch near the South Dakota border. A band of rain coming out of southern Wisconsin tonight will move into west central Wisconsin shortly after midnight and move into eastern Minnesota late tonight. It will transition from rain to snow as it moves west across western Wisconsin, with mostly snow expected on Monday, that may mix with rain at times in west central Wisconsin during the day on Monday. Precipitation will quickly diminish between 8 pm and midnight Monday night. The worst conditions with falling snow are expected over eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin Monday afternoon into early Monday evening, with snow having the greatest impact on the Monday evening commute. Snow accumulation will range from 3 to 6 inches, generally along and east of I-35, with amounts gradually tapering down to around an inch near the South Dakota border. Water vapor imagery overnight had shown an expanding dry slot
moving northward across Iowa, and into southern Minnesota. Some of
the enhanced satellite images also shown a favorable area of
continued expansion of precipitation across far southern
Minnesota/northern Iowa through 12-15z. Slowly, the precipitation
will taper off to occasional drizzle/freezing drizzle. The exception
will occur in far western Minnesota where upper level low is
forecast to remain in this area through the afternoon.
A secondary short wave was noted across western Texas early this
morning. This feature will rotate northeast across the Southern
Plains, and Midwest later today. It will begin to develop another
area of precipitation. In addition, the weakening surface low across
southern Minnesota today will re-intensify across the Great Lakes as
the aforementioned short wave moves across the Midwest. Once this
surface low deepens, an additional area of deeper moisture/lift will
move west/northwest across Wisconsin, and eventually eastern
Minnesota by Monday afternoon.
Specifically, once the steadier light rain ends this morning, there
will be a period of mainly drizzle/freezing drizzle or light
freezing rain before the transition to snow develops late
tonight/Monday. Accumulating snow is still likely in far
western Minnesota today, tonight, and Monday as the upper low slowly
weakens. The Winter Storm Warning has been extended until Monday
afternoon for this reason. Farther to the east, a Winter Weather
Advisory will be issued for the combination of freezing
drizzle/freezing rain developing overnight, and then snow as the
colder air begins to filter across the region. Much
farther to the east across west central Wisconsin, deeper moisture
is expected to last longer along with the stronger upper level
feature. Therefore, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for this
area Monday and Monday night.
.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Saturday)

In the longer term, the upper flow looks to flatten a bit in the
wake of Monday's upper trough, but re-amplification of the large
scale flow will occur during the second half of the week as
troughing re-develops over the central CONUS. However, the main
circumpolar vortex looks to remain well north of the area, so
although it will cool down there doesn't appear to be a
significant outbreak of colder temperatures (nor are any major
precipitation events suggested during the forecast period).
In terms of specifics, we will continue to see some mid-upper
level frontogenesis and slab lift due to isentropic ascension with
the upper cold pool Monday night, leading to a continuation of
snowfall across the eastern portion of the area as we wring out
the remaining moisture from Monday's system. The surface low will
finally push eastward on Tuesday, allowing snowfall to end across
the area. We will then see return flow and warm advection return
by Tuesday night, but moisture return will be quite limited until
Wednesday night and Thursday when a surface low moves by to our
north. This could bring some light precipitation through the area,
although the main chance will be to our north where better deep
layer saturation occurs. Although there remains some disagreement
in the guidance, as would be expected at day 7, there is
reasonable consensus on a more widespread light precipitation
event late Friday and Saturday, which could bring a period of
light snow to the area. At this point, only chance PoPs are
warranted.

Bands of -RA/-DZ/-SN will continue to rotate north/northwest
across southern/western Minnesota this morning. The bulk of the
heavier precipitation has ended in south central/southeast
Minnesota. Slowly this area of lighter precipitation will spread
northwest, but IFR conditions will continue under -DZ/BR/FG. The
best chance of -SN will occur from KRWF-KAXN until 15z. There is a
chance of LIFR cigs or near airport minimums as the surface low
moves across southern Minnesota this morning. By the
afternoon/evening conditions will improve some, but the -DZ will
change over to -SN as colder air begins to filter across the
region. Winds will start from the northeast/east, then become
light south/southeast, becoming northwest by Monday morning.
KMSP...
A period of IFR or even LIFR cigs are possible before 18z. Any -RA
should change over to -DZ with some BR. Snow is possible late
tonight, and especially Monday morning as colder air filter across
the region. Any accumulation should be after 12z. Winds will
remain from the east/northeast this morning, then become
east/southeast this afternoon with a general north/northwest flow
by Monday morning.
