.A Winter Storm Warning is in effect tonight through Sunday
morning for areas along and north of a line from Canby and the
Twin Cities to Eau Claire. Snow is expected to start this evening.
A total of 7 to 12 inches are expected by Sunday morning, with 
the lighter amounts on the southern edge of the warning. From 
Canby to the Twin Cities and Eau Claire, snow will turn to a 
wintry mix Saturday and then turn back to snow Saturday night and
Sunday morning. Gusty east winds of 30 to 40 mph could lead to 
patchy blowing snow as well.

A Winter Weather Advisory continues for southwest Minnesota today,
and then expands to south central Minnesota and portions of west
central Wisconsin tonight. Freezing drizzle will continue on and 
off today before turning to snow tonight. The snow will likely 
turn to rain and possibly sleet Saturday morning.

the lighter amounts on the southern edge of the warning. From 
Canby to the Twin Cities and Eau Claire, snow will turn to a 
wintry mix Saturday and then turn back to snow Saturday night and 
Sunday morning. There is expected to be a very tight snow gradient
somewhere near this line with all snow to the north and a

Made some significant cuts to PoPs overnight through Friday.
Observed precip has been slow to build north along the Neb/IA
border tonight and that combined with what we saw with our 00z
sounding means we are probably still a few hours away from seeing
any precip. Really, through Friday afternoon, forcing is weak and
the moisture profiles aren't great. Really, confidence does not
begin to increase in precip occurring until the main wave starts
moving this direction and that's not until after 00z Friday, so we
held back on really ramping up on PoPs until Friday
evening/night. Left the advisory for tonight into Friday morning
in place, but confidence is decreasing if that is even necessary.
At the very least, delayed its start time until 2am to see if we
can't get any precip going.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday night)

Light wintry precipitation is expected to develop this evening
across southwest Minnesota and spread northeast into tomorrow
morning, setting the stage for a significant winter storm expected
to impact the area beginning Friday night. Beginning to see more
light snow obs spread into southeast SD/northwest IA, and expect
precipitation to eventually begin across southwest Minnesota this
evening as the atmosphere saturates. Light snow looks like the
primary precipitation type to start, but a transition to freezing
drizzle continues to look possible overnight as the mid and upper
levels dry out but the low levels remain saturated. Precipitation
amounts are expected to be very light which makes it tough to gauge
how much impact we could see to travel from slick roads. Think the
best chances for seeing a glaze of ice continues to be across
southwest and southern Minnesota so kept the current Winter Weather
Advisory going as is.

On and off light precipitation looks to be possible through the day
on Friday, with periods of drizzle and light snow both possible as
ice crystals fall in and out of the precipitating cloud layer.
Temperatures look to hover around freezing into the afternoon so
additional pockets of light freezing drizzle can not be ruled out,
but think pavement temperatures should get warm enough to mitigate
widespread travel impacts. Heavier and more widespread wintry
precipitation could then begin to spread into the area as early as
late Friday afternoon, as strong forcing aloft arrives ahead of a
deepening upper level low.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

There remains uncertainty with the winter storm, largely due to
the loss of ice in the dendritic growth zone. The scenario that
needs to be answered is as follows:

1. the idea of an aggressive dry slot is overdone and it will
remain across southern MN and southward,

2. the dry slot does reach the majority of the CWA and precip
transitions to predominantly rain or freezing rain depending on
boundary layer conditions. The northern CWA should remain at or
below freezing and this could produce an ice storm. Or,

3. the dry slot does reach the majority of the CWA, however lower
level instability and convective updrafts loft moisture into the
dendritic growth zone. This process creates its own ice aloft,
which then results in continuous transition between snow and
freezing rain and back based on the strength of the updrafts into
the DGZ at any given time.

Of all three scenarios, I think the third is most likely looking
at the forecast soundings. Models do bring the dry slot unusually
far north for where the surface and mid level lows are in central
Iowa. Some weak upright instability created by a pronounced moist
warm layer around 750 mb does reach into the DGZ. This occurred
during the April 2018 blizzard over southeastern MN. It kept the
snow totals down due to sporadic showery winter precipitation,
but still caused significant impacts. Following this idea, I
increased the probability of ice aloft to 50 percent from NBM's
zero percent to get "snow and a chance of freezing rain" wording
across central MN and northwest WI Saturday and Saturday evening,
as opposed to solid freezing rain and significant ice
accumulations.

Similar to last night, the 12Z GFS remains a major outlier with
its surface pressure fields. Consequently, it has a much stronger
degree of warm air advection and its elevated warm nose reaches
farther north. This forecast continued the trend of the last
several shifts of discounting the GFS entirely again.

Any wintry mix, if it happens, will turn back to snow as the dry
slot retreats later Saturday night. Snow will then continue
through Sunday morning. Two to four inches are expected area wide
with this final round.

Confidence has increased for significant wintry precipitation in
some form to warrant upgrading portions of the watch to a Winter
Storm Warning. However, offices to the west have decided to punt
to the next shift and thus we are as well. In all likelihood, the
southern half of the watch, including the metro, could be replaced
by separate Winter Weather Advisories for both the first round
and the second round with a break in the middle during the rain.
Adding the two rounds together still adds up to 4 to 8 inches from
Madison to Twin Cities and Eau Claire.

Beyond this system, the rest of the week looks dry with seasonable
temps.

Confidence is increasing in a mainly dry scenario tonight through
Friday and have pushed precip mention back to when main wave shows
up after 0z. Cigs have been interesting as heights have been
increasing through the evening, with a large swath of 8k ft cigs
west of I-35, another reason we really backed off on precip
mention through Friday. Do think cigs will drop again overnight
given moist ESE winds, with the idea of MVFR vis developing in the
afternoon due to BR/HZ continuing.

KMSP...Can't rule out some light snow/dz through the day Friday,
but steady precip arrives between 2z and 5z. Expect this to be all
snow for the first few hours, but transition to a rasn mix or
just plain rain by 12z Saturday.

southern Minnesota...and west central Wisconsin.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Light snow should develop later this evening and move across the
region overnight. Freezing drizzle is also possible overnight into
tomorrow morning, with the bets chances across southwest Minnesota

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Another large winter storm system is expected to impact the
region late Friday through Sunday. Additional accumulating snow
and icy precipitation is possible. Potentially significant
snowfall amounts are possible especially north of I-94.
