The warning includes areas along the Buffalo Ridge in west central Minnesota, and areas southeast of a line from Redwood Falls, to Hutchinson, Clearwater, Princeton and Rush City in Minnesota. Snowfall totals of 6 or more inches are likely in the warned area, with locally higher amounts possible. In addition, gusty northeast winds Tuesday night will shift to the northwest Wednesday, resulting in areas of blowing snow. Travel could be significantly impacted through at least Wednesday morning. Due to some uncertainties in the snowfall amounts, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning north of the Minnesota River from Granite Falls to St. Cloud and Milaca. A short wave will be tracking east across Minnesota and northern
Wisconsin today. Extensive cloud cover across the northern half of
Minnesota early this morning will advect south behind the short
wave this afternoon. The deeper moisture with this system will be
confined well north over northern MN, but a few light showers
could pop up across portions of central MN and northwestern WI.
Westerly winds will increase markedly this afternoon behind the
cold front. Forecast soundings indicate gusts in the 30-35 kt
range across MN this afternoon and early evening.
The main focus in the short term is clearly the winter storm that
will impact the area Tuesday night into Wednesday. Confidence
continues to increase that most of the area will see warning
criteria snow and wind. Guidance continues to come in heavier and
further west, aside from the GFS and GEFS which continues to be
the southeasternmost set of guidance. The ECMWF and EPS are
trending toward the NAM, which remains the northwestern outlier.
00Z EPS mean QPF ranges from 0.4 inches at Alexandria, to 0.6
inches at St. Cloud, and 0.8 inches across eastern MN and western
WI. Box and whiskers charts show a range from 1/2 inch in the
driest members, to around 1 inch in the heaviest members across
most of the CWA. This continues a long trend upward from previous
forecasts. The official QPF forecast isn't quite that high and is
0.1-0.2 inches lower than the EPS mean. Another trend that has
been noted in recent model runs is the development of two
frontogenetic bands of snow late Tuesday afternoon and early
evening - one across western MN and the other one more into
southeastern MN. Eventually snow fills in between the two as the
system fully matures later Tuesday evening, but this could be a
sign of two possible max snowfall swaths. Confidence is too low of
the placement and magnitude of these to explicitly show in the
forecast at this range, but something to watch in hi-res guidance
later today and tonight. Given the QPF increase, snowfall has also
been increased area wide, which necessitated the expansion of the
Winter Storm Watch westward.
Wind will also be an issue Tuesday night and Wednesday. Deepening
low pressure to the east and steep low level lapse rates should
allow fairly substantial gusts around 35 kts during the moderate
to heavy snowfall. This could lead to blizzard conditions across
much of the area, especially in the more blizzard prone areas of
western and southern MN. Decided to continue messaging areas of
blowing snow for now and will await for more confidence in the
timing of heaviest snow and strongest winds before talking up
blizzard conditions in the hazard statement.
Travel is expected to be significantly impacted and warnings will
likely be needed soon.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Sunday)

Once past the Tuesday night to Wednesday snow system, attention
then goes to the weekend system which has had varied model
solutions slowly coming together on what may be a rather sizable
weather system.
The main low pressure center of this upcoming system will actually
move onshore the CA/OR coast Tuesday evening. Aloft, a potent
longwave trough will also approach the western CONUS from the Gulf
of Alaska. As this system moves onshore, it will push high
pressure into the central CONUS, making for a break in the action
Wednesday evening through Thursday evening. However, while the
Upper Mississippi River Valley region will enjoy clearing skies
during the middle of the week, this low pressure system will
strengthen significantly and broaden in size over the southern-
central Rockies, especially Thursday night into Friday morning
with central pressures already down into the lower 990s millibars.
Where the low tracks still has some variance to it as now the
operational GFS and ECMWF keep it more directly west-to-east and
south of MN/WI as the system ejects from the Four Corners region,
moves across NE/IA and into the southern Great Lakes. There is a
very large precipitation shield being advertised with this system,
and should it remain to the south, this would keep the
precipitation shield largely, if not entirely, within cold air
enough for an all-snow event. This system also is not quite that
progressive, especially compared to the Tuesday night system.
Whereas the early week system will have the bulk of the
precipitation confined to the Tuesday night period, the weekend
system may well have periods of precipitation from Friday night
through Sunday morning because of its slow forward propagation.
Also, by the time it arrives into the central CONUS, central
pressures will have dropped into the lower 980s millibars and the
upper level longwave trough looks to take on a negative tilt which
would also enhance the dynamics of this system to producing
appreciable precipitation. While it is still way too early to get
into specifics, confidence is growing that a significant storm
system will impact the Upper Mississippi River Valley region for
the tail end of the Thanksgiving weekend.

afternoon today. But as the cold front to the north sags southward
into our region this afternoon, mid-level broken ceilings will
follow for all WFO MPX terminals. Though, precipitation should

with tomorrow's winter system arrives in southwestern Minnesota

KMSP...High ceilings will remain for the rest of the day as lower
ceilings in the 2-3 kft range will develop this afternoon. These
clouds will likely remain thru Monday evening. MVFR conditions
will exist overnight into Tuesday morning as ceilings should
remain above 1500 feet. KMSP should remain dry into late Tuesday
afternoon but precipitation from tomorrow evening's storm system
will be encroaching on our area.
