.SHORT TERM...
TODAY AND TONIGHT...Forecast Confidence - Medium.
Milder thermal ridge sets up ahead of approaching cold front.
better lower level forcing arrives from mid to late afternoon with
mid level dcva arriving this evening. Moisture profile not overly
impressive and the MOS pops are reflecting this despite the rather
formidable front and potent mid level energy. With the forcing not
in phase and moisture disjointed opted to go with a pop regime more
like the consensus of short range models which is more reflective of
the MOS guide. Leaned towards a consensus of 3 hourly MOS guide for
temps. So any afternoon light rain in the milder afternoon airmass
will flip to a light mix or a brief period of light snow. Little if
any accums though best shot of this is focused more in the northeast
cwa. Temps will crash overnight with strong low level cold air
advection in the wake of the front. Any untreated pavement moisture
will likely freeze over with the influx of much colder temps.
FRIDAY...Forecast Confidence - Medium.
Chilly with a steady west/northwest wind. Pressure gradient will
still be in play between the departed system and Plains high
pressure. Should see sunshine with the colder, drier airmass.
FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT...Forecast Confidence -
Medium to High.
Mostly quiet conditions are expected into Saturday evening as cold
temperatures remain settled over the region. 925H temperatures will
remain in the 8 to 12 below range. Short wave ridging will pass
across the western Great Lakes during this period resulting in the
quieter conditions. There is one caveat however. The center of the
high pressure will be moving slowly northeast, to the north of the
Great Lakes. This will result in an increasing northeast wind late
Friday night and Saturday. The low level winds increase to 10 to 15
knots from the northeast. GFS forecast soundings do show an
increase in low level RH, below 3K feet. Delta-T is around 10
degrees. At this time, thinking flurries or very light snow showers
possible. Due to uncertainty will hold off on introducing at this
point.
Guidance continues to be in reasonable agreement on piece of short
wave energy getting ejected east into the central Plains on Saturday
and into the central MS Valley region Saturday night into Sunday.
This piece of energy will be moving east along a tightening thermal
ribbon and may bring more widespread light snow to the area Saturday
night. Increasing low level winds Saturday night will also increase
the chance for lake effect/enhanced snow along the lake during the
night.
.LONG TERM...
SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT...Forecast Confidence - Low to
Medium.
The chance for light snow will continue on Sunday as this weak short
wave and associated isentropic lift move across the area. The
remains considerable variability on the track of the surface low per
latest deterministic and ensemble guidance, with the larger standard
deviation across northern IL on Sunday. Never the less, will keep
likely pops for -sn on Sunday due to potential for isentropic lift
along low level thermal ribbon draped across the region, as well
as lake enhancement potential.
All Medium range guidance carries this wave to the east Sunday night
as weak ridging and subsidence moves through the area to start the
work week. Mid-level steering flow remains west-southwest as
upstream long trof amplifies over the western CONUS. Next short wave
gets ejected into the Midwest/Great Lakes around mid-week, but
considerable uncertainties on timing and track of this system. Ptype
from this system would likely remain all snow. For now will
continue chance pops Tuesday night and Wednesday.

.AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...
Mid and high level moisture will dominate this morning. LLWS concern
is early on here as 850 wind max pulls northeast. Otherwise progs
suggest better saturation with time as better moisture pools ahead
of approaching front. So trended ceilings to MVFR levels towards mid
afternoon into this evening. Some IFR ceilings possible as well.
Precip with front looks overall spotty and light and mainly in our
northern forecast area. Trend for any precip would be to start out
as liquid but then change to a mix or a bit of light snow as colder
air works in. Gusty west/northwest ramp up later this afternoon into
this evening as cold front works through.

.MARINE...
Given tight pressure gradient that sets up in wake of cold front, a
Gale warning will go into effect this evening for the open waters.
It appears the gale gusts will linger longer in the northern 1/2 so
extended that portion longer into Friday morning. The nearshore has
isolated gale potential during the overnight but looks overall
borderline, so per coord with LOT and GRB have hoisted small craft
advisory from this evening through mid afternoon Friday. Have also
gone with a Heavy Freezing Spray Watch for the south half of the
lake including our nearshore area with the colder and windy airmass
in place.
