Rapidly developing low pressure in the Panhandles region will move
quickly into the Great Lakes by late tonight, bringing widespread
rain, some thunderstorms, and strong winds to the area through the
weekend. Much of the next week will be near normal for the time of
year with zonal flow in place across much of the country.

.NEAR TERM /Today/...

Will carry chance pops this morning as guidance shows some
potential for precipitation to fill in between separate areas
northwest and south of central Indiana, but expect precipitation
to ramp up in coverage later this afternoon as the area moves
solidly into the warm sector and upper level support approaches.
Strengthening deep layer shear and at least weak instability will
merit a thunder mention this afternoon.

Consensus temperatures were generally acceptable, although did
bump them up slightly given strong warm advection and the fact
that the early portion of the day may be drier than guidance is
accounting for.

.SHORT TERM /Tonight through Monday Night/...

Tonight into Sunday evening looks to be quite active, first with
widespread showers and a few thunderstorms associated with the
cold front, then strong winds in its wake.

Marginal risk day one nudges into the southern portion of the
forecast area, and this is reasonable, although as the text
mentions, organized severe this far north may be difficult to come
by. More likely, it will be in the form of stronger cells or a
thin convective line along the cold front mixing down the 50-55KT
low level jet in spots this evening.

Following frontal passage, a strong surface pressure gradient will
be in place, and between strong cold advection beginning late
tonight, 925 mb winds of 40-50KT, and BUFKIT momentum transfer
progs continuing to show gusts in excess of 40KT and potential for
a few gusts in excess of 50KT, will keep the high wind watch
going, but punt one more shift on final warning/advisory decision
in collaboration with neighboring offices. This looks to be a
high end advisory/low end warning situation, but there remains
uncertainty as to which is most appropriate in the watch area. The
entire area will almost certainly require a wind advisory, and
perhaps high wind warning for the northern two thirds. Suffice to
say, it will be quite windy, and we will continue to message this
in all available venues.

The remainder of the short term, aside from Sunday morning, looks
to be dry as high pressure will be in control across the area.
Departed from consensus numbers tonight into Sunday as overnight
lows Sunday morning should not be far off from daytime highs
Sunday, with strong cold advection ongoing. Temperatures during
the day Sunday are likely to be falling much of the day.

.LONG TERM /Tuesday night through Saturday/...

Models in good agreement that the synoptic setup will feature west
coast ridging which will allow several waves to quickly move through
the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley in the fast flow aloft. The first
few will be weak but a strong upper low will move into the Great
Lakes by Saturday. Blend suggests there will be off and on snow
showers through the period. Am not confident in timing enough to
change the blend.

Blend near normal temperatures look reasonable.

.AVIATION /Discussion for the 23/18Z TAF Issuance/...
Issued at 1225 PM EST Sat Feb 23 2019

Moderate confidence that MVFR conditions will deteriorate to IFR 21z
or so. BMG already was seeing IFR ceilings, so it could even be
sooner at the other sites. Meanwhile, High Resolution Rapid Refresh
suggests showers and possible a few storms will be increasing in
coverage after 21z as well. Thunder chances too low to include in
TAFs, however.

Non-convective winds will also be an issue especially after 06z with
gusts over 40 knots possible after 10z. Winds will start off
southeast and become southwest and west after 05z.
