Additionally, light snow of up to two inches over eastern Colorado will be starting to spread eastward across far southwest Nebraska and western Kansas. A Blizzard Warning has been issued for Saturday into Saturday evening for the snowfall accumulations that could range from 4 to 6 inches across the area. Strong sustained winds of 40 to 45 mph with gusts approaching 60 mph are expected mainly over west central Kansas on Saturday. Those strong winds will likely combine with the fresh snow cover to produced widespread severe reductions in visibilities of 1/4 mile or less in Blowing Snow. Areas of Blowing Snow will continue into Saturday evening even after the snow quits falling across the region by late Saturday afternoon. Major forecast continues to be major storm to affect the area.
Satellite showing an active and amplified flow from the Pacific into
North America. Feature of interest is the strong, closed off, and
cold storm system now over the southwest portion of the
country.
At this time it looks like the Ecmwf, Ukmet, and Nam are starting
best with our incoming system. First concern with this forecast
is whether this system will end up going too far south. Trends in
the models have been going that direction. Second concern is that
models may be changing the phase to snow too fast.
Today...Right rear quadrant of the upper jet starts affecting the
northwest half of the area from late morning into the early
afternoon. First a small scale shortwave, acting on good theta-e
lapse rates, is moving through and is causing a mixture of
precipitation. Hrrr and Arw are catching this nicely and adjusted
the pops accordingly.
After the above shortwave goes through, the mid levels dry out and
we lose whatever ice in the column have. At that time the area
will have freezing fog and drizzle before warming up enough,
hopefully, that this changes to plain drizzle. However, northern
areas may stay cold enough that a change may not occur.
Area looks to stay socked in with stratus through the day, and do
not expect much of a warmup even with the southerly winds. I
cooled off the highs.
Tonight/Saturday...Right rear quadrant of the jet moves across the
eastern portion of the area in the evening. Incoming system will
be approaching from the west during the evening. Before it gets
close enough, area will have light rain, drizzle, and fog, the
freezing variety if cold enough.
Column should become saturated and snow should begin in the far
west after midnight. Locations along and west of the Colorado
border should see the most snow during the night with a continued
mixture of precipitation to the east of the area.
System is a little further south than yesterday but should start
getting a favorable position late tonight into early Saturday
bringing the major impacts of moderate to heavy snow along with
blowing snow. This then progresses across the area through the
day.
Am concerned that model output and current forecast has too much
snow and not enough ice due to the later arrival of the deeper
colder and more moist air mass. Also am concerned that the system
could still go even further south. Certainty is high that area
will receive precipitation. However, the certainty of freezing
precipitation and snow is low. The combination of snow, freezing
rain and the strong winds will create significant impacts.
Because of that uncertainty and of collaboration/uncertainty of
surrounding offices, I did not upgrade the watch at this time.
Hopefully the day shift can pin down the details better. I went
colder on the high temperatures but still may be cold enough.
Saturday night...The precipitation ends by this period. There
could still be some blowing snow early. It should be cold with
possible snow cover, clearing skies, and lighter winds.
Sunday/Sunday night...Only change here was to lower temperatures
due to the colder air mass in place and the possible snowfield
that will be in place.

Dry conditions return to the region Saturday night as a system exits
to the northeast towards the Great Lakes. Some patchy blowing snow
could persist into the early evening as northwest winds decline.
Northwest flow aloft shifts to westerly Sunday into early next week
as weak ridging develops across the western CONUS. This pattern
continues through at least Wednesday before the next upper trough
advances from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Plains. As this
wave travels east, it generates some light snow chances Thursday
night into Friday. However, confidence remains low at this time.
High temperatures are forecast to mainly be in the 30s on Sunday and
Monday, but may need to be lowered later on to account for any
snowpack from the Saturday storm. Temperatures fluctuate the rest of
the week with a frontal boundary across the region. Lows are
generally in the single digits and teens throughout the period.

LIFR to VLIFR conditions will persist at GLD through the 18Z TAF
period with areas of fog and freezing drizzle and southeast winds

Winds will also be turning northerly after 09Z and will become
strong and gusty with blowing snow possible.
IFR conditions with intermittent light snow will become LIFR to
VLIFR after 01Z with lowering visibilities and ceilings and
development of freezing drizzle and fog. Snow will be observed by
12Z with winds turning more northerly and becoming strong and
gusty after 16Z with blowing snow possible.
