.SYNOPSIS...Cold conditions with sub-freezing temperatures are
expected tonight through Friday morning. Additional rain, mountain
snow, and gusty southerly winds are expected on Saturday, with
periodic rain continuing Sunday through much of next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Temperatures will remain the primary concern
through Friday as a cold air mass lingers over the region. Sub-
freezing temperatures are expected again for coastal areas late
tonight and early Friday morning. Temperatures may trend slightly
colder than this morning, falling to 32F along the coast of
Mendocino and Del Norte counties. The mercury may also dip to 29F
or less in some of the colder coastal valleys of Humboldt county
for an hour or two early Friday morning.
Attention will quickly turn to the next storm set to impact the
area on Saturday as another lower pressure system deepens over
the eastern Pacific and puts northwest California in an active
southwest flow pattern through early next week. A Winter Storm
Watch has been issued for Trinity County Saturday into Sunday
morning. Model guidance is hinting at colder air hanging on a bit
longer as mesoscale processes keep snow levels locally lower all
the way through Saturday night. This would likely produce another
round of heavy snow across much of Trinity County before warmer
air arrives and precipitation changes over to rain on Sunday.
Interior Humboldt and northern Mendocino Counties will also
warrant consideration for winter weather products this weekend,
but current thinking is that the transition to rain will occur
quickly at these locations, with only a relatively brief window
for light snow at the onset of precipitation Saturday morning.
The potential for an inch of snow in the interior along the 101
corridor will need to monitored closely. This could potentially
have a greater impact where snow fall is less common and commuter
traffic heavier.
Even though winds with this incoming storm does not appear to be
as strong as the last storm on Tuesday, we are expecting at least
wind advisory gusts to around 50 mph over the ridges and higher
elevations of the coastal range. Breezy to locally windy conditions
will also be possible in some of NW-SE oriented valleys where the
SE winds may be channeled. The atmosphere does appear to be more
stable compared to the storm on Tuesday which may end up keeping
the strongest winds confined to the ridges and the wind prone
coastal headlands. Also, the center of this storm will bottom out
offshore, so the best chances for strong gusty winds around 50
mph will most likely occur during the passage of an occluded
front, Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
A moist SW flow pattern with periods of light to moderate rain
and gusty winds will likely continue all of next week. The GFS and
ECMWF were in decent agreement with more bouts of rain Monday and
Tuesday. We may see a period of drier weather around mid next
week, however there is still some potential for showers as the
upper low heads southward into southern California. Another storm
will rapidly approach late in the week. This storm may provide
heavier precipitation amounts on Friday or next weekend.

.AVIATION...Coastal locations should remain mainly clear
and fog free tonight due to light offshore winds and cold dry
conditions promoting frost formation. Elsewhere, shallow stratus is
expected to developed across interior valleys, including the Russian
River Valley, where IFR ceilings could return at KUKI as soon as a
few hours after sunset. Stratus is expected to lift tomorrow
afternoon, but may linger for longer than it did today. TDJ

.MARINE...Light northerly winds will prevail across the waters
through Friday. Seas caught an interesting bump in size that was
totally missed by model guidance, where for a few hours local seas
experienced sig wave heights above 15 ft. However, these have
decayed this afternoon as quickly as they grew, thus the SCY's for
the northern waters will be allowed to expire with this update.
After Friday, a strong occluded front is forecast to enter the
region. The pressure gradient between inland areas and the ocean
will subsequently become tight, resulting in the development of
south-southeast winds from 30 to 40 kt and gusts to 50 kt during
much of Saturday. Recent model runs are showing even stronger winds
present in the southern outers for this time period, thus decided to
lift a storm watch in lieu of the gale in this zone. Steep hazardous
seas from 10 to 20 feet will be probable as well. Thereafter, winds
and seas are forecast to gradually diminish during Sunday and Monday.
