.SYNOPSIS...A weak storm system will slide southeast past the
region tonight. This will be followed by a period of dry weather
on Thursday, and then widespread rain Friday and Saturday.
Showers and low snow levels will occur Sunday and Monday.

.DISCUSSION...An upper-low was positioned west of the Mendocino
Coast Wednesday afternoon. A zone of augmented ascent was present
north and east of the low, which was likely yielding light
rainfall over the southern coastal waters. Model guidance moves
the low southeast along the CA coast tonight. This track will
potentially clip southern Mendocino county and aid in light
showers during the evening. Otherwise, shortwave ridging will
develop across the region on Thursday resulting in pleasant and
mild afternoon conditions.

An amplified upper trough is forecast to move across the NERN PAC
Thursday night into Friday. Model output shows a low-level SW-NE
oriented baroclinic zone positioned near the base of the trough.
The interaction between these two features may aid in rapid
cyclogenesis during Friday afternoon...with a deep compact surface
low moving toward the coast of NWRN CA by Friday evening.
Advisory level winds appear probable as that takes
place...particularly over portions of Mendocino and southwestern
Humboldt counties. In addition, several waves of moderate rainfall
are forecast to spread north and east across the region Friday
afternoon through Saturday. Although flooding does not appear
likely at this time, mountain mud and rockslides will be possible.

After Saturday...low and midlevel temperatures are forecast to
become progressively colder as a polar airmass spreads southward
from the Gulf of Alaska. By Sunday night/Monday morning...multi-
model guidance shows 850 mb temperatures near -7 C, which will aid
in driving freezing levels down to 2500 feet over Mendocino
County, to around 1000 feet over Del Norte County. Accumulating
snow at pass level will be likely as a result as an unstable post
frontal airmass aids in widespread shower development. In
addition, model guidance indicates the environment will be
conducive for accumulating small hail along the coast.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions characterized by scattered to broken
mid level cloud cover are expected to prevail along the North
Coast and corresponding coastal terminals through this evening as
a low pressure system passes south of the area. Patchy fog
development will be a possibility late tonight at both CEC and ACV
as offshore flow begins to wane, with intermittent IFR/LIFR
conditions possible through mid morning on Thursday. Meanwhile,
light rain showers are possible near UKI by early this evening as
the system brushes Mendocino County, however VFR conditions are
expected for the duration of the TAF period. Ceilings at UKI will
improve overnight as any shower activity tapers off before 12z.

.MARINE...Seas will be dominated by a slowly decaying mid period
westerly swell on the order of 7-8 feet through Thursday evening
as light to gentle breezes prevail over the coastal waters. Winds
will begin to ramp up out of the south late Thursday night as the
next system begins to approach the area. Fresh to strong breezes
and building short period seas will likely necessitate Small Craft
Advisories over the outer waters by Friday morning. Winds will
continue to increase through Friday afternoon and approach Gale
force Friday night as a surface low approaches the coast. Run to
run inconsistencies amongst the model guidance with respect to the
track and timing of this feature lend relatively low confidence
to the specific forecast details late Friday into Saturday,
however seas can generally be expected to become more treacherous
later this week. A new long period swell train from the WNW will
also arrive late Thursday into Friday, contributing to the chaotic
and hazardous seas. /CB

.BEACH HAZARDS...A long-period westerly swell near 6 feet at 16
seconds has entered the coastal waters. This swell will yield a
moderate sneaker wave threat through this evening. On Thursday,
the swell will drop to around 12 to 14 seconds making set
behavior less pronounced. Another long period swell is expected to
move across the waters Thursday night into the Friday, however
there will be increasing southerly winds and associated wind waves
which will help mitigate the apparent set behavior. MKK
