.SYNOPSIS...Another Spring storm will generate widespread showers
and high mountain snow above 5500 feet tonight through Tuesday.
Blustery westerly and northwesterly winds are also expected,
especially over the exposed higher elevations and mountain peaks.
Drier weather and brisk northerly winds are expected around mid week.

.DISCUSSION...Today will be mostly dry as a weak shortwave ridge
transitions across the area this morning. Another vigorous upper
trough will rapidly approach the north coast this afternoon and
generate some precip late in the day. Widespread showers will
then overspread the region this evening as a 130kt westerly jet
dips southward across northern California. Moist westerly flow
will be favorable for upslope precipitation generation in the
hills and mountains of Humboldt and Del Norte counties. The
greater Eureka area will receive more prolific rain fall with this
system compared to the weekend storm that went south. Moist
westerly flow, widespread showers and blustery westerly winds will
persist into Tuesday. Cold air aloft will also create an
environment favorable for thunderstorms. The best chances appear
to be along the Del Norte county coast tonight where a shortwave
trough amplifies off the Oregon coast. Be ready for wet and
occasional blustery weather through Tuesday. Also, if headed to
the high country, be ready for some heavy wet snow. A foot of snow
will be possible above 5500 feet in the Trinity mountains tonight
through Tuesday.
The spell of wet weather and below normal interior temperatures
will moderate around mid week as the flow aloft amplifies. A
large closed low aloft will shift to our south and southeast while
high pressure builds toward the west coast. This pressure pattern
will be a good SETUP for gusty northerly winds at the coast and
over the mountain peaks. THE BLEND, NAEFS and ECMWF ENS indicate
another shortwave trough dropping southward over the area next
weekend. This shortwave may put a damper on the warming and
produce additional shower activity, primarily over the interior.

.AVIATION...Low clouds have expanded across much of the interior, as
well as along portions of the Redwood Coast and the adjacent coastal
waters. Ceiling heights are presently running around 1500 ft, and
minimal visibility reductions are noted. Clouds are forecast to thin
later this morning with daytime heating, but an approaching frontal
system will bring increasing clouds back into the picture by mid
afternoon and light rain by evening.
Winds are expected to be generally light through much of the day,
but low-level S to SW winds will increase before sunset with the
potential for gusty surface winds and/or some low-level wind shear.

.MARINE...Winds will back and become southerly today ahead of
another approaching frontal system. Wind speeds will reach advisory
levels over at least the N waters by late today, with winds shifting
to NW on Tuesday. Northerlies will continue to increase through mid-
week with gale force gusts possible.
In additions to increasing short period local wind waves, larger W
mid-period swell will build into the waters tonight and early
Tuesday, with combined seas peaking near 20 ft. Have continued the
Hazardous Seas Watch for the S outer waters starting around midnight
tonight. This will probably be upgraded to a warning later today.
Surf heights along the NW California coast will approach 20 ft as
well, just below High Surf Advisory criteria. /SEC
