.SYNOPSIS...Low elevation snow will continue through the late
morning, but should diminish during the afternoon. Multiple rounds
of rain and mountain snow can be expected for much of the rest of
the week, beginning late tonight and continuing until possibly
next weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
.TODAY...A significant winter storm continues to impact the
region early this morning after producing heavy mountain snow and
lighter but still very impactful accumulating snow all the way to
sea level overnight. Beginning roughly between 11 PM and midnight
last night, snow levels dropped just enough to bring accumulating
snow to nearly all elevations along the Redwood Coast, including
in the Humboldt Bay and Crescent City areas where significant
travel impacts occurred. Many portions of Highway 101 and 199 saw
significant accumulations in areas that do not frequently see this
kind of snow, with reports of two to three inches below 1000 feet
and much more than that in higher elevations, resulting in
numerous traffic accidents and downed trees along roadways. As of
5 AM, waves of showers continue to impact the Redwood coast,
although snow is a bit more sporadic than it was overnight and
temperatures in some areas have risen a degree or two...just
enough to raise snow levels slightly and melt some of the snow
already on lower elevation roads. Still, bursts of snow down to
sea level continue to be possible over the course of the morning
as the last of the showers move onshore, and moderate to heavy
snow will continue in the hills through the first half of the day.
Snow should dissipate during the afternoon, allowing for some
improvement in travel conditions. As of early this morning, the
vast majority of these impacts have occurred in Del Norte,
Humboldt and Trinity Counties where the heaviest snow has fallen,
but some light snow accumulations will also be possible across
much of Mendocino County through the remainder of the morning as
showers move toward the south. Accumulations here will be much
lighter and more sporadic than in areas farther north, but may be
enough to cause travel issues nonetheless.
.TONIGHT AND MONDAY...After a reprieve from the snow showers this
afternoon, a weak shortwave will bring another round of light
rain to the region overnight, with snow levels likely to begin at
around 1000 to 2000 feet at least initially. As a result, some
additional light snow accumulations will once again be possible at
relatively low elevations overnight through Monday
morning....again heaviest in Del Norte County and parts of
Humboldt and Trinity Counties. During the day Monday, light
precipitation will continue but snow levels will steadily rise as
warmer air arrives ahead of the next system. By Monday night, snow
levels in Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino Counties will rise to
roughly 3500 feet, and to roughly 2500 feet in Trinity County,
which will result in less snow along many of our area passes.
.LATE MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY...Between late Monday night and
early Wednesday, a slow moving cold front will gradually push
through the area, bringing a period of potentially significant
rain and mountain snow. This system will bring a moderately warmer
and much wetter airmass into the region, along with a prevailing
southwesterly fetch that is favorable for orographic lift in our
coastal mountains. As a result, moderate to heavy rain can be
expected below the snow level, with significant mountain snow
accumulations above it during this timeframe. While none of our
rivers are currently forecast to flood during this timeframe, this
will likely result in a fairly robust response from area rivers
due to the combination of moderate to heavy rain rates and also
some snowmelt from the recent low elevation snow. And speaking of
snow, there remains some considerable uncertainty regarding the
snow levels, most notably across Trinity County. Model guidance
seems to suggest that some areas across mostly eastern Trinity
County will likely hold on to somewhat lower snow levels, and if
this occurs, some areas along Highways 36 and 3 could see
significant snow accumulations throughout the event. A Winter
Storm Watch may be needed once the current Warnings and Advisories
expire. In addition, some gusty south to southwest winds can also
be expected, and may require a Wind Advisory for parts of the
area as we gain more confidence in the coming days.
.THURSDAY AND BEYOND...Yet another potentially significant storm
system and cold front will is likely to impact the region late
Thursday through the weekend, although confidence remains low
regarding the day to day details. However, another round of heavy
rain is possible as the cold front pushes through the region Friday,
followed by a potentially prolonged period of showers and
relatively low elevation snow into the weekend. /BRC

.AVIATION...Snow and rain showers impacted much of the coast
overnight, with both coastal terminals experiencing bouts of both
types of precipitation. South to southeasterly winds have been
observed along the coast during the overnight, with statistical
guidance suggesting these will continue at the coastal terminals
through today. Additionally, gusty conditions are forecast to return
to the coast early tomorrow morning. KUKI experienced some fog early
this morning, expect this to be shortlived and conditions to return
to VFR to MVFR by mid-morning. Mostly VFR to MVFR conditions are
expected to prevail through tonight, though a dip below MVFR will be
possible with any heavier showers that move over any terminals.
Showers producing small hail will also be possible along the coast
through this morning. Otherwise, showers are forecast to taper off
this evening. NOTE: Due to a telecommunication problem, the
observation from KCEC has not been disseminating. The ASOS remains
functional.
&&
.MARINE...Strong northerlies/northwesterlies will weaken by midday
today, with gusts up to 35 knots still possible through the morning.
Winds will become southwesterly early on Monday and are forecast to
increase throughout the day. The northern waters will see the
strongest winds starting late morning on Monday, with sustained
winds expected to be in the 25 to 35 knots range. As a result, a
Gale Watch has been issued for both northern zones from late Monday
morning through late Monday night. Winds will weaken Tuesday and
into Wednesday, with a switch to northerly expected Wednesday
afternoon. Winds are forecast to mostly remain around 20 knots from
Thursday evening through early on Friday across the outer waters,
with a switch to westerly expected Thursday evening.
Seas will come down today and Monday, with all zones expected to
fall below 10 feet on Monday morning. A northwest swell will move
through the waters on Tuesday. This swell, in addition the wind
driven waves from the gusty southwesterlies, will cause seas to ramp
back up beginning Monday afternoon. Combined seas will peak around
12 to 15 feet early Tuesday morning across the northern waters and
the southern outer waters. Seas will slowly subside through the
middle of the work week and eventually fall below 10 feet again
Thursday afternoon. The arrival of another northwest swell will ramp
seas back up on Friday, with seas expected to peak around 18 to 19
feet across the outer waters Friday evening.
