Heavy mountain snow and a widespread strong wind event are the
forecast challenges in the short term.
Currently...High pressure remains in control of the weather this
afternoon. Dry weather through most of the day with increasing
clouds ahead of a low pressure system currently in northeastern
Nevada. Winds are light so far this afternoon and temperatures
have climbed into the mid to upper 50s east of the Laramie Range.
Overall...a pretty nice afternoon.
Conditions begin to change tonight as the low tracks into Utah.
Start to see snow developing over the Sierra Madre Range as early
as this evening. GFS...NAM and ECMWF showing a persistent area of
snow over the Sierra Madre Range with 6 hour QPF of .15 to .20
inches through Sunday evening before easing. Getting roughly 16+
inches of snow out there. When combined with increasing
wind...decided to upgrade the Advisory we had to a Winter Storm
Warning.
Craig to Casper gradients on the increase as well. By Sunday
afternoon...gfs guidance showing 850/700mb gradients near 50mtrs
that increase to 70/80mtrs respectively by Monday afternoon. GFS
700mb winds really consistent with 50kts across Carbon County
around 03Z Monday...spreading east overnight. By Monday afternoon
we are looking at 70-75kts at 700mbs across much of southeast
Wyoming. GFS 850mb winds over the Panhandle Monday afternoon
continue to be forecast at 50-55kts. For now...decided on a High
Wind Watch for areas along and west of Interstate 25...but would
expect wind headlines to shift east into the Panhandle as we get
closer to the event.
.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Saturday)

The long term forecast looks to be mostly quiet compared to the
windy start to the new week. On tuesday morning the shortwave
trough which is expected to bring strong winds to southeastern
Wyoming will depart, ejecting east southeastward across the
central plains. A mid level 570 hpa ridge will quickly build from
the west shutting down the high winds as the surface high
strengthens and spills onto the plains. Unlike last weeks area of
high pressure, much more mild air is expected behind this system
with high temperatures remaining in the 40s to near 50 for most.
Some strong winds on Wednesday will likely help temperatures
creep just a bit higher in the afternoon.
By Thursday, the high will move to the east with a secondary lobe
of high pressure developing to the west. Aloft, mostly zonal flow
will develop keeping things still quiet through the weekend before
another ridge aloft develops.
Beyond next weekend southwesterly flow aloft will return with an
onshore trough across central california. Some potential for
precipitation exists with this system, but details remain unclear
this far out. The climatological outlooks continues to show above
average temperatures with equal to slightly above average chances
for precipitation.

VFR conditions are expected for most terminals across southeast
Wyoming and Nebraska Panhandle through the forecast period with
gusty winds picking up late Sunday morning. Snow showers may
impact KRWL early Sunday morning through the mid afternoon. Best
chance for MVFR to possibly IFR from 14-18Z. Confidence has
lowered over the last few hours, but light fog for KAIA and KSNY
is still possible for a few hours after 11Z Sunday.

early Tuesday. Wind gusts will be in excess of 65 mph for wind
prone areas of Southeast Wyoming. These winds are likely to spread
out into the Nebraska Panhandle Monday afternoon. Humidities will
remain non-critical with an increase in precipitation and
snowfall over the Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges. Higher totals of
10 to 16 inches over the Sierra Madre Range with 3 to 6 expected
over the Snowy Range.
