.SYNOPSIS...
A weak frontal boundary will cross the region overnight and
then stall bringing some light precipitation to the region. Low
pressure over Texas will then head northeast and bring a soaking
rainfall to the lower lakes for the second half of the week. It
will also potentially bring a period of strong gusty winds to
the region late Thursday night and Friday. Behind this system,
it turns colder for the weekend with the potential for some snow
showers.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
A weak cold front is located across western Lake Ontario to
Cleveland, Ohio late tonight. Clearing has occurred just ahead
of the front however clouds will replace this in the overnight
hours. Despite limited moisture, can't rule out a light shower
or drizzle with the front towards daybreak. Patchy fog is also
possible along the Lake Erie shoreline adjacent to the
Chautauqua Ridge and into the Southtowns as winds become
northwest and low-level moisture increases into Wednesday
morning.
Wednesday, the front will not make much progress into and across the
region as it stalls out. Furthermore, the air mass behind the front
won't significantly change across the region. In fact, the coldest
of the air will hold back well to our west across Michigan where a
tightly packed H850 thermal gradient will reside. It is this
boundary that will become the focus over the next several days as
several waves track along this boundary which will potentially bring
copious amounts of precipitation to our region. Otherwise, it will
be cooler with highs expected in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Also,
as the first of these waves begin to track up along this boundary
look for shower activity too increase in coverage, especially as we
head into Wednesday night.
Wednesday night, a consolidating area of low pressure over the Ohio
Valley will likely bring rapidly deteriorating conditions with
increasing chances for showers and then widespread rainfall on
Thursday. The initial slug of precipitation will be supported by a
40-50kt LLJ which is forecast to lift north-northeast out of
Pennsylvania overnight. This combined with a supporting H250 jet to
our north will likely support rain becoming heavy at times by early
Thursday morning and on Thursday, especially across the Southern
Tier into the Finger Lakes. This low will then deepen and pass by
just to our west with the potential for strong gusty winds, more on
that in the short term disco. Otherwise, look for overnight lows in
the low to mid 60s.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
...Soaking Rains and Strong Winds will Headline this Period...
A powerful shortwave...seen in WV imagery over Utah late this
afternoon...will dig across the southern Rockies tonight and
Wednesday before emerging over the central plains Wednesday night.
In the process...it will energize a well established inverted trough
that will extend from the Ohio Valley to the Lower Great Lakes. By
the time this period opens on Thursday morning...a consolidating
surface low will be found over Ohio. During the course of the day...
the strengthening storm system will slowly move across Lake Erie to
southernmost Ontario. As the aforementioned strong mid level
disturbance rounds the base of the supporting longwave trough...an
increasingly divergent upper level flow will combine with impressive
lift within the jet entrance region of a 170kt H25 jet over Quebec
to support widespread steady rain over our forecast area. While the
rain may be heavy at times during the afternoon...the greatest
chance for significant rainfall will be found closer to a 40-50kt
low level jet over eastern Pennsylvania where there will also be the
risk for some thunder. Rainfall amounts on Thursday will thus range
from a half to three quarters of an inch over the IAG Frontier to an
inch or more over the Southern Tier and portions of the Eastern Lake
Ontario region. Another factor in this forecast range will be a
predominantly southerly flow into the midday hours...which will
allow for some downsloping (minimal drying) over the lake plains.
The surface low will track over or JUST to the west of our forecast
area Thursday night...while the supporting trough will become
negatively tilted. A strong occlusion/cold front...pending the track
and potential split of the sfc low...will sweep across our forecast
area in the process. The steady rain will give way to scattered
showers processes with the rain showers forecast to at least mix
with some wet snow showers in the stronger cold advection over the
western counties. In fact...a slushy accumulation is not out of the
question across the higher terrain of the Southern Tier by daybreak.
Of more importance will be the onset of strong winds along...and in
the wake of the frontal passage. A 55kt low level jet could be mixed
to the surface near the immediate fropa...then after winds drop off
a bit for a couple hours...a 60-65kt jet between 800-900mb will plow
across the western counties. Deepening subsidence and strong cold
advection will help the majority of these winds to be mixed to the
surface...with funnelling up the length of Lake Erie adding as much
as 25 percent to the sfc speeds. There continues to be a strong
suggestion of a significant stratospheric intrusion...as the 1.5 PV
surface is forecast to lower to roughly H85. The strong winds with
gusts to 60 mph will then be possible Friday from Lake Erie and the
IAG Frontier to Rochester and finally Jefferson county and the
Thousand Islands region. As the strong LLJ exits across the
Adirondacks during the course of Friday afternoon...winds will start
to drop off.
Otherwise...it will be notably colder on Friday with H85 temps
averaging -5c not allowing near sfc temps to recover more than the
low to mid 40s f. The cold air within the cyclonic flow will support
a fairly pronounced lake response during the first half of the
day...then as the synoptic moisture is peeled away...the mixed rain
and snow showers will taper off through the afternoon.
As the next potent shortwave digs out another trough over the Upper
Great Lakes Friday night and Saturday...the steering flow will back
more to the southwest. This will direct mixed rain and wet lake
effect snow showers northward into the BUF metro area and also
across the northern parts of Jefferson county. Its worth noting that
while it will be chilly enough to support a lake response...the
general lack of synoptic moisture should preclude any significant
precipitation.
This may change Saturday night though...as the robust shortwave will
plow across the Lower Great Lakes. The associated lake enhanced pcpn
could include a short period of steady wet snow that will have the
chance to accumulate on mainly elevated surfaces...although that
will also be determined by the intensity. In either case...the mixed
pcpn within a southwest flow will push south overnight in the wake
of the aforementioned shortwave.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
During this period broad upper level troughing will become established
across the eastern two thirds of the continent...and will help to
feed colder air across our region into the start of the new work
week. Such an airmass will easily be cold enough to support a lake
response downwind of both lakes.
A cold southwest flow on Sunday will support mixed rain and wet snow
showers...mainly in the snowbelts south of Buffalo and Watertown.
Sunday night and Monday the large-scale flow across our region should
turn more southerly out ahead of another (and stronger) surface trough...
with the combination of the increasingly unfavorable wind direction
and warm advection causing any remaining lake effect activity to lift
back northward and fall apart...before the approaching trough brings
a chance of rain showers to our northwestern periphery during the
day Monday.
Broad warm advection ahead of a storm system over the Upper Great
Lakes should enable all of our forecast area to experience dry
weather on Tuesday...although timing differences for the associated
cold front will warrant using slgt chc pops.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Though we have VFR conditions to start, terminals can expect gradual
deteriorating conditions overnight as a weak front gradually
eases across western NY then stalls out. There may be some IFR-
LIFR conditions across the higher terrain over western NY as
well.
Wednesday, the stalled cold front across the region will keep
copious amounts of cloud cover across the area with some light
showers or drizzle at times. It will also keep MVFR cigs in place
across a majority of the terminals with a some IFR conditions
persisting across the higher terrain through the morning.
Outlook...
Wednesday night...MVFR to IFR with showers.
Thursday...High operational impact expected. IFR-LIFR with rain.
Friday...High operational impact expected. Windy with showers
likely.

.MARINE...
High pressure over Nova Scotia will maintain a generally light
surface wind flow and wave action into this evening.
Tonight, a weak cold front will enter the lower lakes and then stall
over the region. Winds will diminish along with minimal wave
action expected overnight with winds gradually become north to
northeast.
Wednesday, winds and waves will again pick up especially along the
western end of Lake Ontario from Hamlin Beach to the lower Niagara
River. Also, northeast wind flow will likely create higher wave
action from Sunset Bay to Ripley but will remain just below SCA
levels.
Extended outlook, low pressure is forecast to quickly develop and
then rapidly deepen as it tracks by to our west Thursday night into
Friday. This will result in a period of hazardous conditions on both
lakes. Gale force winds are anticipated so a gale watch has been
issued for Thursday night and Friday for both lakes.

.HYDROLOGY...
Expect a general 1-2 inches of rain with the storm on Thursday
and Thursday night. Locally higher amounts to 3 inches are possible,
but most guidance has this axis to the southeast of the forecast
area. Will have to monitor trends, since amounts in excess of 2
inches would pose a risk for flooding. Following this, MMEFS ensembles
show a small percentage of members pushing forecast points in the
Black River to flood stage. This risk was added to the HWO.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Strong southwest winds behind the front have the potential to cause
significant rises on Lake Erie and wave action on Lake Ontario.
Exact levels will depend heavily on wind speeds, but because of
the potential for strong winds a Lakeshore Flood Watch remains
in effect for Erie, Chautauqua, Jefferson, and Oswego counties.
